Abstract The ritual and incantation series Šurpu ‘Burning’ is one of the most important sources for understanding religious and magical practice in the ancient Near East. The purpose of the ritual was to rid a sufferer of a divine curse which had been inflicted due to personal misconduct. The series is composed chiefly of the text of the incantations recited during the ceremony. These are supplemented by brief ritual instructions as well as a ritual tablet which details the ceremony in full. This thesis offers a comprehensive and radical reconstruction of the entire text, demonstrating the existence of a large, and previously unsuspected, lacuna in the published version. In addition, a single tablet, tablet IX, from the ten which comprise the series is fully edited, with partitur transliteration, eclectic and normalised text, translation, and a detailed line by line commentary. -

From Small States to Universalism in the Pre-Islamic Near East
REVOLUTIONIZING REVOLUTIONIZING Mark Altaweel and Andrea Squitieri and Andrea Mark Altaweel From Small States to Universalism in the Pre-Islamic Near East This book investigates the long-term continuity of large-scale states and empires, and its effect on the Near East’s social fabric, including the fundamental changes that occurred to major social institutions. Its geographical coverage spans, from east to west, modern- day Libya and Egypt to Central Asia, and from north to south, Anatolia to southern Arabia, incorporating modern-day Oman and Yemen. Its temporal coverage spans from the late eighth century BCE to the seventh century CE during the rise of Islam and collapse of the Sasanian Empire. The authors argue that the persistence of large states and empires starting in the eighth/ seventh centuries BCE, which continued for many centuries, led to new socio-political structures and institutions emerging in the Near East. The primary processes that enabled this emergence were large-scale and long-distance movements, or population migrations. These patterns of social developments are analysed under different aspects: settlement patterns, urban structure, material culture, trade, governance, language spread and religion, all pointing at population movement as the main catalyst for social change. Furthermore, Dahl proposes a model for understanding the genealogy of the royal family and other Ur III elite families, for which comparable data is not available. In chapters 1 and 2, after a brief introduction to the orga- nization of the Ur III state,2) the author describes the patterns of hereditary succession: lineal, when power is passed from generation to generation, versus non-lineal, or lateral, when power is passed within the same generation. Lineal succes- sion can be matrilineal or patrilineal, the latter can be further divided into succession by primogeniture and seniority. Dahl discusses the historicity of the so-called Sumerian King List and he questions whether the prevailing Mesopotamian sys- tem of succession, and in particular that adopted by the Third Dynasty of Ur, was strictly patrilineal primogeniture. Although all of the dynasties following the end of the Ur III reign adopted a lineal primogeniture pattern of succession, Dahl tentatively suggests that a system of seniority prevailed throughout the third millennium (p. 11). In chapter 3 Dahl provides an updated picture of the House of Ur-Namma, which lasted, according to Dahl, three gener- ations, Amar-Suen, Su-Suen and Ibbi-Suen possibly all being sons of Sulgi. -

Frammento di mattone con iscrizione elamica del re medio-elamita Untash-Napirisha (ca. 1300 a.C.), probabilmente dal sian del dio Ishnikarap a Chogha Zanbil (Iran sud-occidentale) Frammento di mattone cotto, corrispondente alla metà sinistra di un mattone integro, con iscrizione su quattro righe del re medio-elamita Untash-Napirisha (ca. 1340-1300 a.C. in cronologia ultra- corta). Il nome del sovrano è leggibile all’inizio dell’iscrizione. Il testo appartiene alla categoria delle iscrizioni di costruzione (‘building inscriptions’) con dedica alla divinità, dove si menziona un certo edificio, il cui nome era nella parte destra mancante dell’iscrizione (nella maggior parte dei casi un edificio di culto, sian), costruito in un certo tipo di mattoni (upat husi-p) e dedicato (letteralmente ‘dato, offerto’) a un dio, il cui nome pure era nella parte mancante. Nonostante le lacune, il testo è compatibile con l’iscrizione TZ 8 = MDAI32 17, tranne che per la divisione in righe che è diversa sia da TZ 8 (su cinque righe) che da MDAI32 17 (su quattro righe ma con a capo diversi). La differente divisione in righe non desta particolare stupore, visto che un altro esemplare della stessa iscrizione (oggi al Museo Nazionale d’Arte Orientale di Roma, pubblicato in Basello 2013) ha a capo ancora diversi, coincidenti in due casi su tre (righe 3 e 4) con l’esemplare in esame. Se davvero si tratta di un esemplare di TZ 8, iscrizione attestata in 101 mattoni iscritti (Steve 1967, p. 26), possiamo ricostruirne non solo il testo, ma anche la provenienza e la collocazione originale, visto che 94 dei suddetti 101 mattoni sono stati ritrovati in situ nella muratura del sian di Ishnikarap a Chogha Zanbil (antica Al Untash-Napirisha, ‘la città di Untash-Napirisha’), il grande complesso cultuale e celebrativo fatto costruire proprio dal re Untash-Napirisha a circa 30 km da Susa (principale città dell’antico Elam, oggi in Iran sud-occidentale). -

CHOGHÂZANBIL A LARGE TEMPLE FOR GOD By: Mohammad Reza Chitsâz Site of King Untash Napirisha's Ziggurat, Chogha Zanbil, 25 miles south-east of Susa, c 1250 BC The large Choghazanbil temple is one of the three ancient monuments in Iran which have been registered in the Index of World Heritage. The Elamites built this temple approximately 1250 BCE and it resembles the architecture employed in the Egyptian pyramids and Mayan temples. The king, his queen and the crown prince accompanied by his courtiers approach ziggurat mounted on royal chariots. While a large congregation of common people are watching the procession, they disembark from their chariots and enter the ziggurat precincts from the royal gate. Inside the ziggurat Shaten, the chief priest pours water on the king's hands by a pitcher. The ceremony commences with the musicians playing religious melodies by harp, lute and flute. The animals chosen for sacrifice are killed in 14 platforms built like short headless pyramids beside the temple of In-Shushinak. Then the king and his companions ascend to the second floor of the building by stairs. Here the king pours a special syrup on the altar for the intended god and accompanied by the chief priest and a small number of his attendants he ascends to the third floor. In the third floor some of his attendants remain and only the chief priest and his close associates ascend to the fourth floor. In this flour the close associates remain and the king, accompanied only by the chief priest, ascends the main temple of the ziggurat in the fifth floor. -

TOWARD A NEW SYntHESIS * OF THE GOD OF EDOM AND YAHWEH JUSTIN KELLEY [email protected] Life Pacific College USA Summary: Toward a New Synthesis of the God of Edom and Yahweh This article deals primarily with two things: 1) the history and nature of the Edomite deity Qos, as far as these can be determined from the known archaeological and textual evidence, and 2) the similarities between Qos and Yahweh, the god of Israel, particularly in regard to the theories concerning the origins of the deities. Through the article I will consider some of the recent suggestions concerning the origin of Qos and how this may relate to the origin of Yahweh. I will suggest that both deities originated in the northwestern portion of the Arabian Peninsula and, that ultimately, the mutual origin of the deities accounts for the fact that the Bible makes no reference to Qos as the god of Edom. -

Aunque el estudio de la lengua y cultura elamitas siempre ha sido considerado como el hermano pobre de la Orientalística del Próximo Oriente Antiguo, puede decirse que en los últimos tiempos, gracias especialmente a los autores franceses, el conocimiento de la antigua civilización elamita ha experimentado un inusitado auge; en particular desde los años 70 hasta ahora, el volumen de publicaciones sobre el tema se ha disparado en relación con el resto del siglo pasado. Igualmente se han puesto al día ciertos textos, por ejemplo, ciñéndome al ámbito francés, las inscripciones reales de Susa, publicadas por Fl. Malbran-Labat en 1995, una obra imprescindible, que nos ha ayudado enormemente en nuestro camino. En estos momentos en España, el IPOA (Instituto del Próximo Oriente Antiguo) de la Universidad de Murcia está realizando el objetivo de poner a disposición de todo el mundo interesado el material disponible en la actualidad sobre la lengua elamita, con la edición electrónica de los textos (sean cartas, documentos económicos, inscripciones reales, etc.) que se han publicado. Así, se ha creado una página web (www.um.es/ipoa/cuneiforme/elamita) donde pueden encontrarse además de los textos ya mencionados, apartados de historia y una gramática para todo aquel que quiera seguir y profundizar en la traducción de los textos que allí se encuentran.
