Naissance d’un musée – Le Louvre Lens is a unique experience of the cinematic gaze on the creation story of a new museum that’s inadequate in every way: geographically, historically, museographically and architecturally. The film follows the Louvre Lens affair from site selection-- in a region of old coal mines in northern France-- to the first anniversary of its inauguration; an exhaustive cinema project, which explains the unusual length of this extraordinary visual document. The film also deals with recent delocalization operations involving cultural institutions in northern Fran- ce’s Pas de Calais region, such as the Château et Musée de Versailles; and with other examples of the removal of major museums from their original sites, such as the Fondation Guggenheim in Bilbao, the Centre Pompidou in Metz and the Musée du Louvre at Abu Dhabi, in an attempt to understand the circumstances, the logic and the problems correlated to such choices. The film arises from a residential architecture project, “Maison Dom-Ino” (Domus – Innovation), published in 1914 by Le Corbusier: a structure of prefab panels and pilasters destined to redefine architecture through the use of new, highly economical reinforced concrete technology. The video 99 Dom-Ino documents the project’s impact on Italy’s post-war boom: the public housing projects of the 70s, and the rise of real estate firms in the 80s. What emerges is a map of Italy’s architectural landscape, and a detailed, nuanced picture of Italy’s relationship with modern family life. Projections 2014 By Genevieve Yue | November 14, 2014 PART OF SERIES Festival Dispatch Persistence of Vision by Genevieve Yue This year marked the debut of the Projections program at the New York Film Festival. In many ways it was a continuation of the previous seventeen years of the NYFF’s Views from the Avant-Garde showcase, a weekend-long program of experimental film that had been widely regarded as the most important festival of its kind in North America. At Projections, amid the newer, noticeably younger crowd, there were still many familiar faces from the experimental film world, from Ken Jacobs, who flashed his always mischievous grin, to Lewis Klahr, who gave a heartfelt admission to a packed theater that this gathering remained the highlight of his year. The program, organized by Gavin Smith, Aily Nash, and Dennis Lim, was announced as “an international showcase of artists’ film and video work,” in contrast to Views’ emphasis on “avant-garde” or “experimental” film. Though the renaming of the program, and a handful of terms used to describe it, may seem like a subtle shift, it resituates the festival firmly in the domain of contemporary visual art. The practice of avant-garde film, which has had a long and durable history in New York especially, may persist at Projections, but at least in name, its tradition as a relatively autonomous third term between commercial filmmaking and the art world seems to have been muted. The change may have been inevitable, if gradual and somewhat difficult to perceive. Views incorporated the moving image work of artists from the start, and over the years, many of its regular filmmakers have migrated to the spaces of galleries and museums.

Making Nature emphasises the symbiosis that has existed between humans and animals for thousands of years. Four separate rooms: ‘Ordering’, ‘Displaying’, ‘Observing’ and ‘Making’ combine to explore how human decision-making influences our classification of animals and our attitudes towards them. The differences and similarities we perceive between humans and non-human animals have been the subject of enquiry since the ancient Greeks, but it was not until the 18th century that we began to seek scientific explanation. Taxonomy – the naming, describing and classifying of organisms – proposed a system for objectively ordering and ranking the animal kingdom. Today, its legacy underpins almost every aspect of our daily lives. Natural history museums, zoos and wildlife documentaries create representations of nature that frame our ideas about other animals. They arrange the natural world, whether through realistic displays of preserved specimens, the dramatic staging of living animals or the careful editing of film footage. What we see and how we encounter it has a significant effect on our behaviour towards other animals. With the rapid loss of habitats and species threatening the health of our planet, the historical roots of our beliefs about other animals are coming under scrutiny. Is the separation of humans from other animals – both in our minds and in our environments – compatible with creating a sustainable world? Degreecoordinates. Shared Traits of the Hominini Apes (Humans, Bonobos and Chimpanzees), 2015 Marcus Coates in collaboration with primatologist Volker Sommer This work presents questions about our anatomy and behaviour. Since identical answers are possible for all members of the Hominini ‘tribe’ of apes (humans, bonobos, chimpanzees), they do not define differences between these species.
