Celebrating 30 Years of Supporting Inuit Artists
Celebrating 30 Years of Supporting Inuit Artists Starting on June 3, 2017, the Inuit Art Foundation began its 30th Similarly, the IAF focused on providing critical health and anniversary celebrations by announcing a year-long calendar of safety training for artists. The Sananguaqatiit comic book series, as program launches, events and a special issue of the Inuit Art Quarterly well as many articles in the Inuit Artist Supplement to the IAQ focused that cement the Foundation’s renewed strategic priorities. Sometimes on ensuring artists were no longer unwittingly sacrificing their called Ikayuktit (Helpers) in Inuktut, everyone who has worked health for their careers. Though supporting carvers was a key focus here over the years has been unfailingly committed to helping Inuit of the IAF’s early programming, the scope of the IAF’s support artists expand their artistic practices, improve working conditions extended to women’s sewing groups, printmakers and many other for artists in the North and help increase their visibility around the disciplines. TThehe FFrogrog PPrince,rince, PPartart I 4 Lesson Objectives Core Content Objectives Students will: Demonstrate familiarity with the fairy tale “The Frog Prince” Identify the fairy tale elements of “The Frog Prince” Identify fairy tales as a type of f ction Identify common characteristics of fairy tales, such as “once upon a time” beginnings, royal characters, elements of fantasy, problems and solutions, and happy endings Language Arts Objectives The following language arts objectives are addressed in this lesson. Objectives aligning with the Common Core State Standards are noted with the corresponding standard in parentheses. Refer to the Alignment Chart for additional standards addressed in all lessons in this domain. Ratings: These are reading GUIDELINES. Reading ages and abilities vary widely, so please keep in mind that I don’t even pretend to know what you or your kids/siblings/whoever can handle. These ratings are determined based on general reading levels and general content tolerance levels. The rating means a book has one or more of that kind of content, not necessarily all of them. Not every book rated PG-13 is going to have swearing, for example. Sometimes it’s rated that for violence. PG-13 does not necessarily mean ‘clean’. That’s why I’ve added clean to the series that qualify. G: as safe as a kids’ book or family documentary PG: mild violence, mild clean/sweet romance handled lightly, and/or exciting adventures that aren’t too tense. PG-13: some violence, mild physicality and sexuality, and/or mild swearing. PG-16: high levels of violence, psychologically medium-dark scenes, and/or mid-level sexual content, adult concepts, and/or medium-level swear words and frequency. Mature: intense violence, high level sexual content, intense ‘dark’ content, psychologically dark scenes or concepts, and/or lots of swearing. Clean: little to no mild swearing, violence that isn’t graphic, kissing and sexual content handled the same way you’d find in a Hallmark movie. The Brothers Grimm 항햗햔햙햍햊햗햘 핲햗햎햒햒 1 The Brothers Grimm Letter from the Chair: Dear Delegates, My name is John Ruela and I will be your Chair for the Brothers Grimm Crisis Committee at SHUMUN XXI. I am currently a sophomore majoring in History with minors in Arabic, Middle Eastern Studies and Religious Studies. Although I am personally most interested in the Middle East, I have a love for oral tradition that carried stories to become famous over centuries, and because of this the Brothers Grimm anthology is extremely interesting to me. In my free time, you can find me reading sci-fi, forfeiting sleep to watch bad Netflix shows, and talking too much about world news. Although I had a brief one year experience with Model Congress in high school, I started doing Model UN in my freshman year when I joined Seton Hall’s competitive Model UN team. I co-chaired in SHUMUN XX last year for the Napoleon’s 100 Days Crisis Committee. That was a blast and I cannot wait to experience chairing a fantasy committee this year! With a wide range of local legends and fables, we hope to see the sort of creativity that originally inspired these stories. The Frog Prince There Was Once a King Who Had Beautiful Daughters
The Frog Prince There was once a king who had beautiful daughters. The youngest often liked to play with a golden ball near a pond, in the middle of a forest near the palace. One day, her ball fell into the pond, and it was much too deep for the princess to get, but she was given help by a kind frog who told her that her tears would even melt the stones. He told her that he would get her ball for her, if she allowed him to be her playmate and eat from her plate, drink from her cup and stay with her. She agreed, but she did not keep her word when the frog returned her ball to her. Instead, she ran home and left him behind. The next morning the frog showed up at her home, and he asked that she, please keep her end of the bargain. The king, upon hearing what happened, ordered his beloved daughter to keep her promise. So, she was forced to allow the frog to eat from her plate, drink from her cup and stay with her. The morning after, the frog told the princess that he would leave her forever if she did one last thing for him, which was to give him a kiss. She, being glad to be rid of him, agreed and kissed him immediately. At once, the frog turned into a handsome young prince! He had been cursed, and the only thing that could break the curse was the kiss of a princess. Guest blog written by Inuksuk McKay I grew up in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, before Nunavut had become its own again. Although many Inuit lived, and still live, in Yellowknife, most of my family live in the Kitikmeot and Kivalliq regions. I grew up hearing Inuinnaqtun and Inuktitut dialects all the way from the western to central to eastern arctic. Among the many dialectal differences, one of the main ones is whether you use an ‘h’ sound or ‘s’ sound in certain words.
