The Right to Protection of Religious Feelings Rex Tauati Ahdar* Introduction Do religious people have a legal right to have their feelings protected? When publications, films, radio and television broadcasts, artwork and so on, deeply offend and upset the religious sensibilities of devout citizens, should the state intervene? Should insulting religious material be banned? This question was, of course, acutely raised, but not necessarily answered, on the world stage with the furore over the Danish newspaper editorial cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad in a highly unflattering light.' In New Zealand, a controversy over a satirical television programme generated similar feelings of outrage and indignation on the part of certain believers - fortunately without any violence erupting - and this event provides the impetus for this article. In February 2006, Canwest TV Works Ltd screened "Bloody Mary", an episode in the American Soufl~Park satirical cartoon series, on one of its television channels. In brief, the episode featured a statue of the Virgin Mary spraying menstrual blood on a cardinal and the Pope. Many complaints ensued, including one from the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference that charged that the show was deeply insulting and that it demeaned icons and practices venerated by Catholics. It said great pain and offence had been caused not only to the Catholic community, but also to members of other Christian denominations, Muslims and many non-Christians. In that last respect it is interesting that nonc other than the Prime Minister, Helen Clark, a self-confessed agnostic, said that, as a woman, she was offended: "I personally find it quite revolting."' The numerous complaints to CanWest did not lead it to change its mind and, indeed, it brought forward the scheduled date of screening by three months. -

A less obvious antecedent that The Simpsons benefitted directly and indirectly from was Hanna-Barbera’s Wait ‘til Your Father Gets Home (NBC 1972–1974). This was an attempt to exploit the ratings successes of Norman Lear’s stable of grittier 1970s’ US sitcoms, but as a stepping stone it is entirely noteworthy through its prioritisation of the suburban narrative over the fantastical (i.e., shows like The Flintstones , The Jetsons et al.). 2 . Nelvana was renowned for producing well-regarded production-line chil- dren’s animation throughout the 1980s. It was extended from the 1960s studio Laff-Arts, and formed in 1971 by Michael Hirsh, Patrick Loubert and Clive Smith. Its success was built on a portfolio of highly commercial TV animated work that did not conform to a ‘house-style’ and allowed for more creative practice in television and feature projects (Mazurkewich, 1999, pp. 104–115). 3 . The NBC US version recast Feeble with the voice of The Simpsons regular Hank Azaria, and the emphasis shifted to an American living in England. The show was pulled off the schedules after only three episodes for failing to connect with audiences (Bermam, 1999, para 3). 4 . The Representation of Suicide in the Cinema John Saddington Submitted for the degree of PhD University of York Department of Sociology September 2010 Abstract This study examines representations of suicide in film. Based upon original research cataloguing 350 films it considers the ways in which suicide is portrayed and considers this in relation to gender conventions and cinematic traditions. The thesis is split into two sections, one which considers wider themes relating to suicide and film and a second which considers a number of exemplary films. Part I discusses the wider literature associated with scholarly approaches to the study of both suicide and gender. This is followed by quantitative analysis of the representation of suicide in films, allowing important trends to be identified, especially in relation to gender, changes over time and the method of suicide. In Part II, themes identified within the literature review and the data are explored further in relation to detailed exemplary film analyses. Six films have been chosen: Le Feu Fol/et (1963), Leaving Las Vegas (1995), The Killers (1946 and 1964), The Hustler (1961) and The Virgin Suicides (1999). These films are considered in three chapters which exemplify different ways that suicide is constructed. Chapters 4 and 5 explore the two categories that I have developed to differentiate the reasons why film characters commit suicide. These are Melancholic Suicide, which focuses on a fundamentally "internal" and often iII understood motivation, for example depression or long term illness; and Occasioned Suicide, where there is an "external" motivation for which the narrative provides apparently intelligible explanations, for instance where a character is seen to be in danger or to be suffering from feelings of guilt. -

Article 34 of the new constitution, passed in January 2004, provides for freedom of the press and of expression. A revised 2005 Press Law guarantees the right of citizens to obtain information and prohibits censorship. However, it retains broad restrictions on content that is “contrary to the principles of Islam or offensive to other religions and sects” and “matters leading to dishonoring and defaming individuals.” It also establishes five commissions intended to regulate media agencies and investigate complaints of misconduct; one of the commissions has the power to decide if journalists who contravene the law should face court prosecution or a fine. Critics of the law have alleged that its prohibition of “anti-Islamic” writings is overly vague and has led to considerable confusion within the journalistic community on what constitutes permissible content. Amendments to the media law proposed in May 2007 could give authorities greater control over content and include vague prohibitions on defamation; these were opposed by local journalists and the proposal had been withdrawn by the government by year’s end. Media outlets are occasionally fined or given warnings for broadcasting “un- Islamic” material or offending local culture. Cases of journalists and others being arrested on blasphemy charges have had a chilling effect on press freedom, with an accompanying rise in self-censorship. -

ANDREU ROCHA SCARPETTA European University (Rome) DOSSIER ON DISCRIMINATION AND INTOLERANCE AGAINST CHRISTIAN FAITH OSCE REGION 2006 PRESENTATION The present dossier offers the description of different acts of discrimination and intolerance against Christians in the countries that conform the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co- operation in Europe). It does not pretend to be an exhaustive description, but and approach to the rising situation of discrimination and intolerance against Christians and Christian symbols. The dossier is divided into two parts. The first part presents recent cases of public mockery against Christian Faith in countries not usually considered intolerant against Christianity. Each case is described under a specific title indicating the country where the act of mockery is taking or had taken place. Before the brief description of the case we have indicated its source. Most cases offer more than one source, in which case we have reduced the references to the most important one. The second part of the dossier considers situations of Christian intolerance in specific countries belonging to the OSCE. Most descriptions of specific acts of discriminations or intolerance are quoted chronologically. When discrimination or intolerance of Christians refers to a general national situation a broader explanation has been introduced. The main source is indicated after each case or description. Country Report on Human Rights Practices in Lithuania Page 1 of 16 2008 Human Rights Report: Lithuania BUREAU OF DEMOCRACY, HUMAN RIGHTS, AND LABOR 2008 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices February 25, 2009 The Republic of Lithuania, population approximately 3.2 million, is a constitutional, multiparty, parliamentary democracy; legislative authority is vested in the unicameral Seimas (parliament). Free and fair parliamentary elections on October 12 and October 26 led to the formation of a center right coalition government in December. Civilian authorities generally maintained effective control of the security forces. The government generally respected the human rights of its citizens; however, there were problems in a number of areas, including poor prison conditions, police and government corruption, domestic violence and child abuse, and trafficking in women and girls. The number of reports of racial or ethnic violence and intolerance continued to grow. RESPECT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS Section 1 Respect for the Integrity of the Person, Including Freedom From: a. Arbitrary or Unlawful Deprivation of Life There were no reports that the government or its agents committed arbitrary or unlawful killings. The prosecutor's office continued approximately 80 investigations involving allegations of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including 20 related to the Holocaust. Courts found three persons former Soviet officers guilty of crimes against humanity committed during the Soviet occupation. They sentenced two of the defendants to five and eight years in prison and pardoned the third, who was considered infirm. Prosecutors also forwarded to the courts two cases involving former Soviet military officers charged in connection with the deportation of individuals to Siberia during the Soviet occupation. -

ARIS 2A Thursday, February 9,1984 Daily Nexus 'Reckless' Heads Toward Realm of Mediocrity By JONATHAN ALBURGER He’s a dark and sexy, anti-social high school outcast; she’s a blonde and sensuous high school conformist. When they discover each other, passions are unleashed and their chemistry explodes. They are Reckless. Sound familiar? Well, despite its all too familiar storyline (e.g., Baby, It’s You, Valley Girl, etc.), Reckless is an artful — if mediocre — statement on coming of age. With that comes a sexual identity and the realization that the ' world is bigger than one’s own back yard; part of this strange initiation is an irresistible urge to move around and break away from establishment and expectations, Rebel Without a Cause is the classic example. High school is a time of chicken dares and magical sexual feelings — of discovery and disillusionment. Reckless of fers us the familiar unscholastic jock, Johnny Rourke (Aidan Quinn) and the idealistic cheerleader, Tracey Prescott (Daryl Hannah). He comes from a broken family of violence and alcoholism; she, from a storybook family of fluffy bedspreads and chargecards. Their “worlds” don’t exactly “collide” —’ as the advertising would have you believe — but Johnny and Tracey do fall in love in a silly, Bradbury Brings Out opposites attract, forbidden love, against-all-odds sort of way ; it’s a stéel town Romeo and Juliet story, only she’s not The Best O f His Pulp . a welder. Director James Foley’s first feature film isn’t great, but A Memory of Murder . it does distinguish itself in the “I want you, I need you, I will By Ray Bradbury.
