If you need help determining your browser or WebCT version, read the instructions at the end of this document.

¥ 4.76, 6.2.1, 6.2.2, and 6.2.3 (PC & Mac) ¥ Explorer 5.0 to 6.0, except 5.5 Service Pack 1 (PC) ¥ 5.0 and 5.1 (Mac OS 9.x) ¥ .1 (Mac OS 10.1) ¥ AOL 7.0 (PC & Mac)

Prepare Your Browser Settings for WebCT

Review the following items to optimize your browser for WebCT:

1. Use a Supported Browser Make sure you are using a supported browser. Browers that are not listed are not supported.

2. If you use AOL... If you are using AOL 7.0 with WebCT 3.7 or higher, disregard this section.

For best results with AOL:

¥ Connect to the Internet using AOL version 4.0 or higher ¥ Open a private chat within ¥ AOL, which allows the AOL client to remain open without asking if you wish to disconnect while minimized ¥ Minimize AOL ¥ Launch a supported browser

3. Enable Java

In Internet Explorer 4.0 and higher ¥ Test for Java. See if you can load a java applet of this puzzle (http://www.mcmprod.com/ applets/weboog/weboog2.htm or this magic cube (http://www.npac.syr.edu/projects/java/ magic/Magic.html . We link to two applets because the sites are occasionally not available. If you can’t link to one, try the other. ¥ If you don’t see the cube, you will need to download an updated Java plug-in for Windows (JVM). Download file from Sun. (http://java.sun.com/getjava/download.html ¥ After installation of the Java plug-in, try to load the puzzle or magic cube java applet again.

In (Navigator 4.5 and higher): • Select “Edit Preferences” • Select “Advanced” • Make sure the “Enable Java” and “Enable JavaScript” boxes are checked • Click “OK” • Select the “About” option. If there are several, choose the one about your browser. A screen will appear that shows your browser name and version.

4. Set Your Browser Cache to Always Reload a Page

In Internet Explorer 4.0 and higher ¥ Select “Tools” then choose “Internet Options” ¥ Select the “General” tab ¥ Select “Settings” from ¥ Select the “Every Visit to the Page” radio button ¥ Click “OK”

In Netscape Communicator (Navigator 4.5 and higher): ¥ Select “Edit” then choose “Preferences ¥ Click the + sign next to “Advanced” to see more options ¥ Select “Cache” ¥ Select the “Every Time” radio button at the bottom ¥ Click “OK

5. Turn off Anonymous Logon

In Internet Explorer 4.0 and higher: ¥ Select “Tools” then choose “Internet Options” ¥ Select the “Security” tab ¥ Select “Custom level” ¥ Scroll down to “User Authentication” settings ¥ “Logon” options ¥ Select the “Automatic logon only in Intranet zone” radio button ¥ Click “OK”

6. Enable Cookies You may need to enable cookies in order to log in to WebCT. Note for WebCT administrators: If you are using WebCT Campus Edition with ticket-based authentication, client browsers must have cookies enabled.

How do I enable cookies for .x?

¥ Select “Internet Options” from the Tools menu ¥ Go to Privacy (tabs) ¥ Adjust preset settings so that cookies are enabled or click on “Advanced” to customize the settings ¥ Click “OK” for each window and click “Refresh” on the browser menu when you return to the web page

How do I enable cookies for .x?

¥ Select “Preferences” on the “Edit” menu. ¥ Click on the arrow next to “Advanced” in the left hand menu and click “Cookies.” ¥ Select “Enable all cookies” or “Enable cookies” for the originating only. ¥ Click “OK” and then click “Refresh” on the browser menu when you return to the web page.

How do I enable cookies for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.x?

¥ Select “Internet Options” from the Tools menu. ¥ Click on the “Security” tab. ¥ Click on the “Custom Level” button. ¥ Scroll down to the “Cookies” section. ¥ To enable: Set “Allow cookies that are stored on your computer” to “Enable.” ¥ Set “Allow per-session cookies” to “Enable.” ¥ Click “OK”

How do I enable cookies for Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x?

¥ Select “Internet Options” from the View menu. ¥ Click on the “Advanced” tab. ¥ Scroll down to ¥ find “Cookies” within the “Security” section. ¥ To enable: Select “Always accept cookies.” ¥ Click “OK”

How do I enable cookies for Netscape Communicator 4.x?

¥ Select “Preferences” from the Edit menu ¥ Find the “Cookies” section in the “Advanced” category ¥ To enable: Select “Accept all cookies” or “Enable all cookies.” ¥ Click “OK”

How to Determine Your Browser and WebCT Versions

To determine your browser version:

¥ Open your browser ¥ From the browser menu bar, open the “Help” menu.

To determine your WebCT version:

¥ UMass is currently running WebCT version 3.8
