Briefing: The New UK Parliament and Government General Election Results The elections to the UK Parliament in May 2010 resulted in the Conservative Party having the largest number of seats although no single party has an overall majority. Number of MPs elected in each political party Conservative 306 Labour 258 Liberal Democrat 57 Democratic Unionist Party 8 SNP 6 Sinn Fein 5 Plaid Cymru 3 Social Democratic & Labour Party 3 Alliance Party 1 Green 1 Independent 1 One seat still has to be decided. This is because one of the candidates for Thirsk and Morton died after nominations closed. As a result, no voting took place in that constituency, and a by-election will be held on 27 May. Negotiations between the main parties have resulted in an agreement to form a Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition government, the first such agreement since 1945.
