Blazich Jr., PhD Naval History and Heritage Command Introduction This document is intended to provide readers with a chronological progression of the activities of the United States Navy and its involvement with World War I as an outside observer, active participant, and victor engaged in the war’s lingering effects in the postwar period. The document is not a comprehensive timeline of every action, policy decision, or ship movement. What is provided is a glimpse into how the 20th century’s first global conflict influenced the Navy and its evolution throughout the conflict and the immediate aftermath. The source base is predominately composed of the published records of the Navy and the primary materials gathered under the supervision of Captain Dudley Knox in the Historical Section in the Office of Naval Records and Library. A thorough chronology remains to be written on the Navy’s actions in regard to World War I. The nationality of all vessels, unless otherwise listed, is the United States. (042) 270073 HELPING IN THE PSYCHOLOGY DEPARTMENT A substantial research project, examining the processes involved in helping and being helped is in its second year. The project which is currently funded by a Uni- versity Research Grant, is conducted by Associate Professor Linda Viney, Dr. Rachael Henry and Dr. Beverly Walker. The initial aim is to develop a model depicting the various aspects of the help giving/help getting relationship. Following the trialing phase, it is hoped the model can be tested out in the various real life helping professions. An ARGS submission has been prepared, which if fruitful will assist in realizing this goal. At present the Department is seeking assistance from people who could devote a few hours to enable data collection. Defence Storage and Distribution Agency Gosport (DSDA) is a Ministry of Defence (MOD) establishment. The agency forms part of Defence Equipment and Support. The primary functions of DSDA are the maintenance, processing, storage and distribution of ammunition and sophisticated weapons. The number of apprentices recruited each year has reduced from 10 in 2003 to six each year since 2006. 2. DSDA contracts with Hampshire and Isle of Wight Learning and Skills Council (LSC) to provide advanced apprenticeships in mechanical and electrical engineering. The programme lasts between 32 and 42 months. The first phase of apprentices’ training is full-time at Fareham College. The second and third phases of training are on-site in DSDA’s workshops or at HMS Sultan in Portsmouth. Three DSDA staff work full-time with apprentices. On-site training and assessments are carried out by apprentice masters who are all employees at DSDA. 3. Unemployment in Gosport in July 2009 was 3.1% compared with 4.1% nationally. The proportion of school leavers gaining five or more general certificates of education (GCSE) at grade C and above, including mathematics and English, in Gosport in 2008 was 45.6%, compared with 47.3% in England. -

Twentieth Century Naval Dockyards Devonport and Portsmouth: Characterisation Report PART FOUR CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS The final focus of this report is to develop the local, national and international contexts of the two dockyards to highlight specific areas of future research. Future discussion of Devonport and Portsmouth as distinct designed landscapes would coherently organise the many strands identified in this report. The Museum of London Archaeology Portsmouth Harbour Hinterland Project carried out for Heritage England (2015) is a promising step in this direction. It is emphasised that this study is just a start. By delivering the aim and objectives, it has indicated areas of further fruitful research. Project aim: to characterise the development of the active naval dockyards at Devonport and Portsmouth, and the facilities within the dockyard boundaries at their maximum extent during the twentieth century, through library, archival and field surveys, presented and analysed in a published report, with a database of documentary and building reports. This has been delivered through Parts 1-4 and Appendices 2-4. Project objectives 1 To provide an overview of the twentieth century development of English naval dockyards, related to historical precedent, national foreign policy and naval strategy. 2 To address the main chronological development phases to accommodate new types of vessels and technologies of the naval dockyards at Devonport and Portsmouth. 3 To identify the major twentieth century naval technological revolutions which affected British naval dockyards. 4 To relate the main chronological phases to topographic development of the yards and changing technological and strategic needs, and identify other significant factors. 5 To distinguish which buildings are typical of the twentieth century naval dockyards and/or of unique interest. -

INTRODUCTION aithness has a rich history stretching back many thousands of years, but in more recent times many born in the county left to make their mark abroad. Part of the reason for the exodus was the Highland Clearances of the 19th century, while Cothers were looking for adventure or had sampled life abroad during spells in the armed forces. For others still, it was because their parents had taken the decision to leave in search of a better life for themselves and their families. Among these were the first Lady Mayor ever to be elected in the British Empire, the 9th President of the Continental Congress in America during the Revolutionary period, and a pioneering road engineer who moved to South Africa when he was young, to name but a few. Those who stayed at home are credited with great engineering feats and geological discoveries – not only at home but abroad – as well as pioneering work in the arts and sciences. They dedicated, and still dedicate, their whole lives to their work and the impact of these inspirational people has touched the lives of many thousands of individuals worldwide. There are many hundreds of Caithness-born people who had an impact on the world in some way, however there is not enough room in this volume for them all. I have chosen as diverse a group as I could and this book provides an insight into their lives and labours. xi ALEXANDER BAIN t the village hall in Watten stands one of the world’s first electric clocks.
