ii!'2~'i' Demesne Arable Farming in Coastal Sussex during the Later Middle Ages ,:i!:i/,] :!; l By P. F. BRANDON N the early fourteenth century only parts of Kent among all the provinces /?::'. :ii !i/i] of England exceeded the wealth of coastal Sussex. 1 The prosperity of this I tract was derived from many sources but its primary basis lay in its sheep- and-corn farming which rested upon exceptionally favourable physical condi- tions, easy access to tide-water, and close proximity to markets in maritime England and on the Continent. ~The quality of its flock management, the wide- spread substitution of a legume course for bare fallow, and densely sown fields producing grain yields higher than the medieval norm placed it firmly in the vanguard of the agricultural development of its day. The agrarian institutions •)] chiefly responsible for this unusually high level of technical efficiency were manors of the classical type of Seebohm and Vinogradoff, with large demesnes "2; and bodies of dependent cultivators, grouped into extensive honours and //I archiepiscopal, episcopal, and monastic lordships. They functioned, par ex- cellence, as 'federated grain factories' during the period of intensive demesne j::, _ exploitation, and gave the tract both social and geographical coherence. :i. | Indeed, they dominated its economy by the immense scale of their operations/ largely conducted with increasing flexibility within consolidated demesnes which were separated from the tounmanneslonds, the attenuated common fields of the servile tenants. The origins of the agrarian conditions within these manors have long in- voked an enquiry which shows no sign of abatement, ~ but little attention has 1 F. -
Gladstone and the Bank of England: a Study in Mid-Victorian Finance, 1833-1866
GLADSTONE AND THE BANK OF ENGLAND: A STUDY IN MID-VICTORIAN FINANCE, 1833-1866 Patricia Caernarv en-Smith, B.A. Thesis Prepared for the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS May 2007 APPROVED: Denis Paz, Major Professor Adrian Lewis, Committee Member and Chair of the Department of History Laura Stern, Committee Member Sandra L. Terrell, Dean of the Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Caernarven-Smith, Patricia. Gladstone and the Bank of England: A Study in Mid- Victorian Finance, 1833-1866. Master of Arts (History), May 2007, 378 pp., 11 tables, bibliography, 275 titles. The topic of this thesis is the confrontations between William Gladstone and the Bank of England. These confrontations have remained a mystery to authors who noted them, but have generally been ignored by others. This thesis demonstrates that Gladstone’s measures taken against the Bank were reasonable, intelligent, and important for the development of nineteenth-century British government finance. To accomplish this task, this thesis refutes the opinions of three twentieth-century authors who have claimed that many of Gladstone’s measures, as well as his reading, were irrational, ridiculous, and impolitic. My primary sources include the Gladstone Diaries, with special attention to a little-used source, Volume 14, the indexes to the Diaries. The day-to-day Diaries and the indexes show how much Gladstone read about financial matters, and suggest that his actions were based to a large extent upon his reading. In addition, I have used Hansard’s Parliamentary Debates and nineteenth-century periodicals and books on banking and finance to understand the political and economic debates of the time. -

George Canning and the Representation of Liverpool, 1812-1823 1
'The Pride of my Publick Life': George Canning and the Representation of Liverpool, 1812-1823 1 Stephen M. Lee I George Canning (1770-1827) was one of the most significant figures on the Pittite side of British politics in the first three decades of the nineteenth century, and his successful campaign for a seat at Liverpool in 1812 both illustrated and contributed to the profound changes that his political career underwent during this period. Sandwiched between his failure to return to office in May-July 1812 following the assassination of Spencer Perceval and his decision to disband his personal following (his 'little Senate') in July i8i3,2 this campaign marked for Canning a turn away from the aristocratic political arena of Westminster, which he had come to find so frustrating, towards a political culture which, if at first alien, was replete with new possibilities. Moreover, Canning's experience as representative for Liverpool was indicative of wider changes in the political landscape of early nineteenth-century Britain. Before considering in detail some of the key aspects of Canning's outward turn, however, it will be useful to offer a brief description of the constituency of Liverpool and a short account of the elections that Canning fought there.3 1 This article is a revised version of chapter 3 of Stephen M. Lee, 'George Canning and the Tories, 1801-1827' (unpuh. Ph.D. thesis, Manchester Univ., 1999), PP- 93-128. 2 For a consideration of these two important episodes see Lee, 'Canning and the Tories', pp. 81-91. 1 Unless otherwise stated the following summary of the politics of Liverpool is 74 Stephen M. -
The Similarities and the Differences in the Functioning of the European Right Wing: an Attempt to Integrate the European Conservatives and Christian Democrats
Journal of Social Welfare and Human Rights, Vol. 1 No. 2, December 2013 1 The Similarities and the Differences in the Functioning of the European Right Wing: An Attempt to Integrate the European Conservatives and Christian Democrats Dr. Kire Sarlamanov1 Dr. Aleksandar Jovanoski2 Abstract The text reviews the attempt of the European Conservative and Christian Democratic Parties to construct a common platform within which they could more effectively defend and develop the interests of the political right wing in the European Parliament. The text follows the chronological line of development of events, emphasizing the doctrinal and the national differences as a reason for the relative failure in the process of unification of the European right wing. The subcontext of the argumentation protrudes the ideological, the national as well as the religious-doctrinal interests of some of the more important Christian Democratic, that is, conservative parties in Europe, which emerged as an obstacle of the unification. One of the more important problems that enabled the quality and complete unification of the European conservatives and Christian Democrats is the attitude in regard to the formation of EU as a federation of countries. The weight down of the British conservatives on the side of the national sovereignty and integrity against the Pan-European idea for united European countries formed on federal basis, is considered as the most important impact on the unification of the parties from the right ideological spectrum on European land. Key words: Conservative Party, Christian Democratic Party, CDU European Union, European People’s Party. 1. Introduction On European land, the trend of connection of political parties on the basis of ideology has been notable for a long time. -

The Brexit Vote: A Divided Nation, a Divided Continent Sara B. Hobolt London School of Economics and Political Science, UK ABSTRACT The outcome of the British referendum on EU membership sent shockwaves through Europe. While Britain is an outlier when it comes to the strength of Euroscepticism, the anti- immigration and anti-establishment sentiments that produced the referendum outcome are gaining strength across Europe. -

Exeter rose seven places to 18th – its highest ever position. It also made major gains in The Times league table. The move upwards was a reflection of the changes made to the University over the previous two years. Those changes were designed to focus resources on our strongest performing areas of academic activity. Through the league tables a picture emerges of a University whose strengths include high entry tariffs, strong student satisfaction, low drop out rates and a high proportion of students achieving Firsts and 2:1s. Growth is another indicator of success and Exeter is now the third largest teaching grant holder in the 1994 Group. Increases in student numbers have enabled the University to gain critical mass and spread overheads. several years to come. Future research income will increasingly be informed by the use of metrics (value of One of the major factors in our league table improvement research grants, number of postgraduate research students has been a strong performance in the National Student etc), so our research strategy has also focused on ensuring Survey.
