Arnold Professor in Humanities, Professor of English Betty Joseph Associate Professor of English Leo Costello Associate Professor of Art History HOUSTON, TEXAS April 2019 Copyright Mark Celeste 2019 ABSTRACT Maritime Networks: The Oceanic Imaginary in the British Long Nineteenth Century by Mark Celeste This project argues that maritime history and culture shape both the form and the content of the nineteenth-century British novel. Each chapter takes up a different historical genre of maritime writing—the shipwreck tale, the steamship story, the logbook, the sea chantey, and the ship surgeon’s manual—as a heuristic for oceanic reading. In recovering these maritime contexts, I track what I call the “oceanic imaginary”: not only how novels literally represent life on and around the ocean, but also how novels draw upon oceanic circulations and exchanges to imagine and craft complex literary systems. Specifically, I chart how novels incorporate historically specific maritime styles, allusions, and structures and how those texts, in so doing, register the flows and frictions of a radically networked world—a world connected and divided, more often than not, by water. As I show, we can read any novel as maritime fiction— regardless of whether the action takes place on land or at sea—if that novel registers the influence of maritime history upon its textual world. My project merges the historicist concerns of oceanic studies with the renewed critical attention to form.

Welcome to the January 'Foden's Fanfare', as always we have tried to make the magazine as interesting as possible including news from 2014 as well as outlining some plans and forthcoming events in 2015. 2014 was a busy year for the band with 101 rehearsals, 37 concerts, 5 contests, 3 CD recordings and 7 coaching days (not including our work with Foden's Youth). We were very pleased to have launched our composers competition receiving a total of 46 entries. Following on from this, a leading UK rival Brass Band as well as University also ran a competition using exactly the same format as ours, nice to be copied!!!! We hosted an International Conductors School in Sandbach led by Allan Withington as well as appearing in concert with a pop group who are signed with a major UK record label. Our self promotional concert in Manchester Cathedral was a huge success and we became record breakers by winning every single contest on the Tameside Whit Friday March Contest (the first time in over 130 years). The film 'Brass in the Blood', tracing the history of the band, moved up a gear with both the Youth Band and ourselves filming some action shots and finally we were privileged to appear in concerts at the RNCM, Royal Concert Hall in Glasgow and the Barbican in London performing a new work 'A Child Like You' from the pen of Andy Scott featuring the band, narration from Foden’s Youth Band members along with a vocalist and harpist.

    The Foundations of British Maritime Ascendancy British power and global expansion between 1755 and 1815 have mainly been attributed to the fiscal-military state and the achievements of the Royal navy at sea. Roger Morriss here sheds new light on the broader range of developments in the infrastructure of the state needed to extend British power at sea and overseas. He demonstrates how developments in culture, experience and control in central government affected the supply of ships, manpower, food, transport and ordnance as well as the support of the army, permitting the maintenance of armed forces of unprecedented size and their projection to distant stations. He reveals how the British state, although dependent on the private sector, built a partnership with it based on trust, ethics and the law. This book argues that Britain’s military bureaucracy, traditionally regarded as inferior to the fighting services, was in fact the keystone of the nation’s maritime ascendancy. roger morriss is Senior Lecturer in the Department of History, University of Exeter, and General Editor of the Navy Records Society. By exploring mariners’ habits, dress, and material practice when in port, this article uncovers their roles as agents of cultural change. These men complicated material hierarchies, with a broad impact on developing western consumer societies, devising a distinctive material practice. They shaped important systems of transnational exchange and redefined networks of plebeian material culture.
