The campus has been designed around large, fully functional workshops so that you can experience a busy workplace environment and gain an awareness of safety while learning. AIRCRAFT In addition to the new workshops and engineering equipment, our aerospace students also have access to a full-size Westland Wasp Helicopter and a newly acquired, stripped-down Hunting Jet Provost. These aircraft are used at RAF and MOD training centres and will give experience of working with fixed and rotary wing aircraft.

3D PRINTING TECHNOLOGY To ensure that our students have access to the latest equipment, CEMAST has also invested in seven 3D printers and a digitizer. 12 Case study: Dean Legg, Mechanic AUTOMOTIVE at HAS Garage in Fareham

Dean, a former Henry Cort School student, decided he wanted to be a mechanic while he was at school, when, as well as restoring vintage cars in his spare time, he was given the opportunity to spend one day a week at Fareham College on an introductory mechanics course. This inspired him to go on to study Motor Vehicle Engineering at Fareham College after leaving school. He now works as a mechanic at HAS Garage in Fareham, carrying out car services, MOTs and repairs. He also teaches mechanic apprentices, passing down the knowledge that his College training gave to him. Dean’s role also includes day-to-day administration such as producing estimates and invoices, which are essential to the smooth running of the garage. Dean says: “I really enjoyed the course as it was very practical and I was able to learn as if I were in a real garage, working on cars and getting involved as a mechanic would. I would advise anyone interested in studying the automotive course just to ‘go for it!’ You feel a real sense of accomplishment with every vehicle you work on and it is a very rewarding career; I hope to progress to managerial level, or eventually, even own my own garage.”

Students must have a Level 2 qualification in Motor Vehicle Maintenance and pass an entrance examination. COURSE DETAILS: This qualification is the final step towards becoming a qualified mechanic with Level 3 technical certification, opening doors to a range of employment opportunities in the auto engineering industry. The course units cover all the skills and knowledge required to:

Dave Coles was founded in June 1997 as a mobile mechanic service. By 2001 it had set up permanent residence in Elmhurst Business Park. Since then it has expanded in size and staff numbers and is now incorporated as Dave Coles Garage Ltd, offering a wide range of automotive services, including MOT testing, servicing, diagnostics, repairs and air conditioning. Seeing the benefit of taking on apprentice mechanics, Dave Coles Garage has built strong and lasting links with Fareham College and CEMAST as the main training provider for their Apprenticeship programmes, ensuring that its workforce has all the knowledge and skills necessary to work in a busy garage environment. “All of our technicians, including myself, have trained, or are currently training with CEMAST,” says Dave Coles, Company Director. “Their courses are thorough and allow all technicians to learn and bring their knowledge to the workplace, where they further themselves. Jensen Motorsport has been involved in the motorsport industry for over 20 years and in that time has built and competed racing cars in many different disciplines including stock cars, Formula Ford, Formula Vauxhall, Formula Renault, Formula 3, Britcar Endurance and the British GT championship. They now specialise in running their own GT race team which competes at circuits such as Silverstone, Donnington and Brands Hatch. Jensen also assists many customers with their car builds and running their race cars for them. At their Gosport facility, they can cater for road cars of any manufacturer, whether for a full rebuild, respray, repairs, MOT or service. Working closely with customers, they ensure they get the most potential from their racing and also operate their own fleet of motorsport support vehicles to collect cars and transport them to and from workshops and race meetings. Although based in Fareham, Jensen Motorsport competes all over the UK and Europe and sees its future mainly in the competitive arena, as well as developing Race and Track Day car build programmes. Jensen Lunn, Team Principal at Jensen Motorsport, says: “We currently have two ex-students who work on our racing team; both have shown an excellent start to their careers with us. We have, as with any potential motorsport employer, always looked for experience in any candidate for a vacancy as our industry is so unique, but now we look for a good training and accreditation such as that provided by CEMAST.”

Defence Munitions (DM) Gosport is a Ministry of Defence establishment situated on a 500- acre site on the western shore of harbour. It forms part of the Weapons Operating Centre (WOC) within Defence Equipment and Support and is responsible for a wide range of ammunition and weapon maintenance processes, including explosive maintenance, sophisticated weapons processing, mini gun and large ordnance processing, engineering support and storage. DM currently employs 230 staff and offers advanced Apprenticeships in mechanical engineering to six new recruits each year. Apprentices play an important role and are integral to the provision of business-focused training that assists the organisation to meet its business targets and objectives. Fareham College and CEMAST have been working with DM Gosport for almost 10 years to provide first-year Foundation training to their apprentices, who complete a year’s full time training with the College to achieve a PEO Level 2, Functional Skills Level 2 and both Level 3 and Level 4 Technical Certificates.
