In this annotated checklist, 111 names of taxa of Peperomia Ruiz & Pav. (Piperaceae) are placed into synonymies, 26 former synonymized names are re-established, and 10 existing synonyms are transferred and placed under a different accepted name of taxon. In addition, 43 lectotypes are designated. Appropriate nomenclatural as well as taxonomic justification is provided. RÉSUMÉ MATHIEU, G. & R. CALLEJAS POSADA (2006). Any formulation of hypothesis in ecology, systematics, biogeography and comparative biology in general is based on taxonomic decisions. A choice of areas for conservation relies on abundance, population structure and geographical distribution of a targeted species, whose taxonomy is of critical importance for final considerations on its real status. In our age of genomics, nomenclatural issues may seem irrelevant for many, but yet are crucial for maintaining a clear and rigid perspective on the taxonomy of a particular group. -

The aim of this study was to compile the species sampled in different areas in the State of Acre. An inventory was carried out in pristine forest in the municipality of Xapuri. This list was complemented with the information of a previous inventory carried out in a forest fragment in the municipality of Senador Guiomard and with a list of species deposited at the Entomological Collection of National Institute of Amazonian Research– INPA. -

The Frasnian (Upper Devonian) antiarch Walterilepis speciosa was first described in 1933 (as Taeniolepis) on the basis of a single specimen. The newly collected material has allowed the head to be described in a more detail, especially the nuchal and paranuchal plates. Other newly described elements include bones of the pectoral appendages and trunk armour, demonstrating a rather high and short trunk armour. The shape and proportions of the head and trunk armour suggest the attribution of Walterilepis to the family Pterichthyodidae; it is most probably closely related to Lepadolepis from the Late Frasnian of Germany. Whilst W. speciosa is endemic to the Latvian part of the Baltic Devonian Basin, the connection to the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge is probably closer than previously presumed. Walterilepis fits into the biostratigraphical column at the same level as Bothriolepis maxima and B. evaldi, indicating the high diversity of antiarchs during Pamūšis time. We surveyed Lepidoptera found on 11 species of Inga (Fabaceae:Mimosoideae) co-existing on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, to evaluate factors influencing diet choice. Of the 47 species of caterpillars (747 individuals) recorded, each fed on a distinct set of Inga.In the field, 96% of the individuals were found on young leaves. Growth rates of caterpillars that were fed leaves in the laboratory were 60% higher on young leaves compared to mature leaves. When caterpillars were fed leaves of nonhost Inga, they grew more slowly. These data provide support for a link between preference and performance. However, among hosts on which larvae normally occurred, faster growth rates were not associated with greater host electivity (the proportion of larvae found on each host species in the field, corrected for host abundance). Growth rates on normal hosts were positively correlated with leaf expansion rates of the host, and fast expansion was associated with leaves with higher nutritional content. Detailed studies on a gelechiid leaf roller, the species with the largest diet breadth, allowed us to assess the importance of factors other than growth that could influence diet electivity. This species showed a 1.7-fold difference in growth rate among Inga hosts and faster growth on species with fast-expanding leaves. -
