Formed in 1995, the group was founded by percussionist Shawn Crahan and bassist Paul Gray. After several lineup changes in their early days, the band consisted of nine members for the greater part of their tenure: Sid Wilson, Paul Gray, Joey Jordison, Chris Fehn, Jim Root, Craig Jones, Shawn Crahan, Mick Thomson, and Corey Taylor. However, the death of Paul Gray on May 24, 2010 and the departure of Joey Jordison on December 12, 2013, left the band with seven remaining members. Slipknot is well known for its attention-grabbing image, aggressive music style, and energetic and chaotic live shows. The band enjoyed a somewhat meteoric rise to success following the release of their self-titled debut album in 1999. The 2001 follow-up album Iowa further increased the band's popularity. After breaking for their first hiatus, Slipknot returned in 2004 with Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses) and once again in 2008 with their fourth album All Hope Is Gone , which debuted at the top spot on the Billboard 200. Additionally, the band has released one live album, 9.0: Live , one compilation album, Antennas to Hell , as well as four live DVDs. One part savage metal and one part macabre sideshow nightmare (but in a good way), Slipknot have made a career out of their larger-than-life, kitchen-sink approach to, well, everything. Offering an overview of the Iowa band's wild ride, best-of compilation Antennas to Hell provides listeners with the opportunity to dive headfirst into the weird, dark world Slipknot have created for themselves. Spanning four studio albums, as well as a track from the Resident Evil soundtrack and a pair of live cuts from their Disasterpieces album, the compilation covers a lot of ground, giving an all-inclusive look at the 13 years since the band came storming out of the Midwest with its double-platinum, self-titled debut in 1999. As a bonus, the compilation also includes a second disc featuring Slipknot's live performance from the 2009 Download Festival, which was originally released as a part of the video album (sic)nesses. Being able to hear the band both in the studio and on the stage makes Antennas to Hell a great jumping-off point for new fans looking to get the full sonic experience in one package, but the lack of real rarities might make longtime fans pause before diving in. • Subjectivity in American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, the Body, the Grotesque, and the Child
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Glasgow Theses Service Subjectivity In American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, The Body, The Grotesque, and The Child. Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession.

It takes mucho cojones—18 of them, apparently—to stage a giant, carnival-like festival for your first live appearance in a foreign country, and that's exactly what SLIPKNOT did in December of 2015 when they held the seventh Knotfest in Toluca, Mexico (about an hour's drive west of Mexico City). The band's performance was captured on the just-released "Day Of The Gusano" , but instead of being advertised as a live DVD or concert film, "Gusano" (Spanish for "maggot", a word long ago appropriated by the band to describe its fans) has been described as a "documentary". Don't be misled, however, for around four-fifths of its 90-minute running time, "Gusano" , which was screened in select theaters around the world, shows SLIPKNOT performing a 16-song set before an enormous, passionate crowd. (For reasons unknown, the DVD and Blu-ray editions rearrange the track listing from the audio-only release. That version showcases the group's complete 17-song set in the same order in which it was performed, and omits "People = Shit" .) The remaining quarter-hour or so primarily features snippets of interviews with unmasked band members and a handful of unidentified Mexican fans, with both camps attempting to portray the group's arrival in town as a Really.

  • Suicide, Self-Harm and Survival Strategies in Contemporary Heavy Metal Music: a Cultural and Literary Analysis
J Med Humanit DOI 10.1007/s10912-014-9274-8 Suicide, Self-Harm and Survival Strategies in Contemporary Heavy Metal Music: A Cultural and Literary Analysis Charley Baker & Brian Brown # Springer Science+Business Media New York 2014 Abstract This paper seeks to think creatively about the body of research which claims there is a link between heavy metal music and adolescent alienation, self-destructive behaviours, self- harm and suicide. Such research has been criticised, often by people who belong to heavy metal subcultures, as systematically neglecting to explore, in a meaningful manner, the psychosocial benefits for individuals who both listen to contemporary heavy metal music and socialize in associated groups. We argue that notions of survival, strength, community, and rebellion are key themes in contemporary heavy metal music. Through literary-lyrical analysis of a selection of heavy metal tracks, this paper aims to redress the balance of risk and benefit. We argue that listening to this type of music, the accompanying social relationships, sense of solidarity and even the type of dancing can ameliorate tumultuous and difficult emotions. Songs which could be read as negative can induce feelings of relief through the sense that someone else has felt a particular way and recovered enough to transform these emotions into a creative outlet. This genre of music may therefore not increase the risk of untoward outcomes in any simple sense but rather represent a valuable resource for young people in difficulty. Keywords Self-harm . Suicide . Heavy metal music . Subcultures . Adolescence . Alienation This paper sets out to address the oft-cited relationship between heavy metal music and adolescent self-harm.
