ARTIST & INFO Band Members: Bacilos Mexican accordionist Celso Piña, aka El Rebelde del Acordeón (the Accordion Rebel), started playing traditional music in the early '80s. Atlantic recording artist Phil Collins has announced the forthcoming release of Going Back, a deeply personal labor of love that finds the eight-time Grammy winner faithfully recreating the Motown and soul music that played such an influential role in his creative life. Due in September, Going Back marks the 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee's first new studio album in eight years.

While in the past Collins has paid tribute to his roots by covering some of his favorite songs - including "You Can't Hurry Love," "A Groovy Kind Of Love," "Tomorrow Never Knows," "True Colours," and others - this marks the first time in his 30-year solo career that he has devoted an entire project to the work of other songwriters and performers.

"It shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone that I've finally made an album of my favourite Motown songs," explains Collins. "These songs - along with a couple of Dusty Springfield tracks, a Phil Spector/Ronettes tune, and one by the Impressions - make up the tapestry, the backdrop, of my teenage years. I remember it as if it was yesterday, going to the Marquee Club in London's Soho and watching The Who, The Action, and many others, playing these songs. In turn I'd go out the next day to buy the original versions."

"My idea, though, was not to bring anything ‘new' to these already great records, but to try to recreate the sounds and feelings that I had when I first heard them. My intention was to make an ‘old' record, not a ‘new' record. To be able to have three of the surviving Funk Brothers play on all the tracks was unbelievable. There was one moment when they were tracking ‘Heat Wave' that I experienced a wave of happiness and wonder that this was actually happening to me! I learned more about production skills and the wonderful songwriting of those concerned whilst making this album, than I have from anything else. To those pioneers...much love and gratitude."

Hornby first attracted the attention of music fans - and artists like Folds -- with his brilliant, bittersweet 1995 novel High Fidelity, about an obsessive record collector's crumbling personal life that was translated into a cult classic film starring John Cusack and even a stage musical. Hornby has been an admirer since attending Folds' first U.K. shows. In fact, Hornby devoted an entire essay in his 2002 collection of music-themed short pieces, Songbook, to Folds, praising the "sophisticated simplicity" of Folds' writing.

The London-based Hornby supplied the words for Lonely Avenue, a project sparked by the long-distance friendship that developed after Hornby published Songbook . Nashville resident Folds then set Hornby's lyrics to music in the vintage, orchestra-sized studio he'd rescued from oblivion and has been working in for the last ten years. The hero of High Fidelity would have approved: Folds conceived the album as a vinyl release and recorded everything live in analog to two-inch tape, finally mastering the disc at Abbey Road.

Joining Folds in the studio at various points were his own band, a string section, and legendary arranger Paul Buckmaster, who, as Folds describes him, is "the person who makes you feel the goose bumps at the chorus and you don't know why." (Those are Buckmaster's string charts, for example, on Elton John's "Tiny Dancer" and The Rolling Stones' "Moonlight Mile.")

Lonely Avenue offers equal measures of humor and pathos in often deceptively cheerful songs. Folds literally gives voice to Hornby's endearingly mixed up, lovelorn characters, who come across as sympathetic even at their most hapless. An aging pop singer has to endlessly and agonizingly reprise his one hit, a paean to a woman he left years ago, to the fans who still attend his shows ("Belinda"). A mother deliberately avoids a stunning view of New Years Eve fireworks as she ministers to her seriously ill child in a London hospital ("Picture Window"). Hornby reconstructs the world of crippled, Brill Building-era songwriter Doc Pomus circa 1962 ("Doc Pomus"), and imagines, with unexpected tenderness, the moment when Alaskan teenager Levi Johnston discovered he'd impregnated the newly announced vice-presidential candidate's daughter, Bristol Palin.

The result is an 11-song set that's as playful as it is soul-stirring, and more than a little magical. Says Folds, "With some albums the comet goes by and you grab it while it's passing and everything you do has some comet dust on it. This is one of those albums."

The band entered the studio and collaborated with producers Sam Hollander and Dave Katz, better known as S*A*M & Sluggo (Coheed & Cambria, Gym Class Heroes, Katy Perry), Steve Hodge (Michael Jackson, Sting, Psychedelic Furs) and The Blasting Room, the production team of Bill Stevenson (Rise Against) and Jason Livermore (Puddle of Mudd). The resulting 14 songs showcase a hard sound with a positive slant.

"Laid," the first single, examines relationship troubles with a combination of wit and wisdom. The song is a propulsive lovelorn rocker that sugarcoats nothing. Jake, who co-wrote the song with S*A*M & Sluggo, reveals, "It's about an experience with a girl who's the ultimate wild child. She gets you under your skin, drives you totally crazy and she's gone."

Yet Jake doesn't shy away from pain on the record either. Songs such as the hypnotic and heartbreaking "Little Sister" see the singer baring his soul. With its soaring melody and crunching riff, "Little Sister" can be hummed or pondered because it's not culled from standard rock fodder. "My little sister died of infant death syndrome at age one. When I wrote that song, I was thinking about what she'd be like today if she were alive. How would my life be different? It's a sad song, but the chorus is very positive. Even if she's an angel now, she'll always be my sister and no matter what, I'm here for her."

In the end, Race You to the Bottom is based on honesty. "We never worried about fitting into a scene," declares the singer. "I don't care how my hair looks; I just want to write good songs. We're proud of the music we created, and it's the best feeling ever."

As producer or co-producer Lanois won Grammy Awards in 1987, 1992, 1997, 2000, and 2001.

Young and Lanois have crossed paths musically over the course of many years, including Lanois' performances at Young's Bridge School Benefit Concert and Young 's performance at Farm Aid when Lanois was Willie Nelson's music director, but this is the first time the two have recorded together. Recorded in Lanois ' home in the Silverlake area of Los Angeles, Le Noise features Young on acoustic and electric guitars with Lanois adding his trademark sonic textures, creating one of the most sonically arresting albums Young has ever recorded. No band, no overdubs, just "a man on a stool and me doing a nice job on the recording," as Lanois puts it.

"Neil was so appreciative of the sonics that we presented to him," Lanois says. "He walked in the door and I put an acoustic guitar into his hands - one that I had been working on to build a new sound. That's the multi-layered acoustic sound that you hear on the songs 'Love and War' and ' Peaceful Valley Boulevard.' I wanted him to understand that I've spent years dedicated to the sonics in my home and that I wanted to give him something he'd never heard before. He picked up that instrument, which had everything - an acoustic sound, electronica, bass sounds - and he knew as soon as he played it that we had taken the acoustic guitar to a new level. It's hard to come up with a new sound at the back end of 50 years of rock and roll, but I think we did it."

It's better if you don't understand; just listen and have a good time. That's the response Bruno Mars will give you with a 10/10/10 smile when asked to describe his sound and music. He would much rather sing, perform, and write his songs than talk Greek Theatre about them, but that is becoming more and more unavoidable these days. It might seem that Mars appeared out of Berkeley, CA nowhere, co-writing, producing and performing on B.o.B's #1 "Nothin' On You" followed by Travie McCoy's chart-climbing 10/12/10 "Billionaire", but he makes one thing clear: "It's not an overnight success". Tacoma Dome Tacoma, WA Mars is a multitalented singer, songwriter, producer and musician who feels most at home when he's performing. Born to a musical family in Honolulu, Hawaii, he was practically raised on the stage. His father, a Latin percussionist from Brooklyn, organized a Vegas-style revue that featured the entire family, including his mother, a talented vocalist. When a four-year-old Mars observed his family performing Motown hits, doo-wop medleys and impersonations for enthusiastic crowds all over his native Waikiki Beach, "I was jealous!" says Mars with a laugh. "My dad put me on stage and I remember singing an Elvis song and that was it. Ever since that moment, I've been addicted."

As soon as he graduated high school, Mars left Hawaii for Los Angeles with dreams of launching his career as a performer. Those dreams got put on hold, however, when The Smeezingtons, the songwriting/production team he founded with Philip Lawrence and Ari Levine, suddenly took off. The pair has crafted major hits for a diverse roster of talent, including Flo Rida's "Right Round", Travie McCoy's "Billionaire", Brandy's "Long Distance" and K'Naan's "Waving Flags", which is the theme song for the upcoming World Cup.

On the heels of "Nothin' on You" and "Billionaire" and as a preview of what's to come from Bruno Mars, Elektra Records released a 4-song EP aptly titled "It's Better If You Don't Understand". The title is taken from a lyric to "The Other Side"; one of the songs included that features Cee-Lo Green and re-teams Mars with B.o.B. The EP has gone on to sell over 20,000 units to date.

In preparation for his full length debut, Bruno recently released his first single "Just The Way You Are". The single is already in heavy rotation across Top 40 stations nationwide and has sold over 200,000 units to date.

Although he's incredibly proud of the recordings, Mars feels the best way to experience the sound is to see him perform live with his band. "That is what I'm most excited for - taking these songs and traveling them around the world." The only place he would rather be than in the recording studio, is with his band on stage - where he grew up. "I think people are really going to gravitate towards the live show. We turn it into a party."

Bruno will have this opportunity as he gears up for his first sold out NYC show at Bowery Ballroom later this month and a fall tour with Maroon 5 in October.
