  • The O'neal Twins
The O’Neal Twins by Opal Louis Nations The O’Neal Twins hailed from a long-established family out of central St. Louis. Their grandparents belonged to the Pentecostal movement headquartered at the All Saints Holiness Church, which later became associated with The Church of God in Christ denomination of Missouri, under the guidance of the late bishop Daniel Bostic. Twins Edgar and Edward were born in 1938 to Rowena and Edward O’Neal III. Early vocal endeavors were encouraged by their pastor, Elder James Ward Senior. However, the lads did not take singing seriously until they were well into their teens. Fooling around on piano and knowing little about harmony, the boys fudged around with a few songs for awhile. The O’Neals were hampered by the fact that they came from a non-musical family. But the boys persevered and by the late fifties were singing at storefront churches, prayer meetings, and occasional trips to guest on programs out of town. St. Louis, of course, is home to The Greater Bethlehem Baptist Church on Washington Street, pastored by the Rev. Cleophus Robinson. The O’Neals became featured guests on Robinson’s church programs. In 1962, the twins were introduced by Robinson to Don Robey, head of Peacock Records in Houston, who signed the pair to a five-year contract. The twins’ first single, topped with the song “Every day with Jesus,” yielded promising sales figures. The O’Neals were fortunate enough to appear on Peter Brysac’s “TV Gospel time” over the spring of 1965. On the program, hosted by Georgia Lewis with Professor Alfred Miller handing the musical arrangements, the duo sang three selections, “Power in the blood,” the twosome’s then current release, plus rapturous renditions of “Prayer is the key” and “Keep in touch with Jesus” from a single put out a year earlier.

As he faces hundreds of strangers, his family, his girlfriend, and the accused abuser himself, the prosecutor coaxes him to describe the most degrading and personal aspects of his ordeal. A similar eclecticism and scope also surfaced in his solo work, which couched his charmingly gravelly voice in a rustic yet rich swamp pop fusion of country, blues, and gospel. Born Claude Russell Bridges on April 2, 1942, in Lawton, Oklahoma, he began studying classical piano at age three, a decade later adopting the trumpet and forming his first band. At 14, Russell lied about his age to land a gig at a Tulsa nightclub, playing behind Ronnie Hawkins & the Hawks before touring in support of Jerry Lee Lewis. Two years later, he settled in Los Angeles, studying guitar under the legendary James Burton and appearing on sessions with Dorsey Burnette and Glen Campbell. As a member of Spector’s renowned studio group, Russell played on many of the finest pop singles of the ’60s, also arranging classics like Ike & Tina Turner’s monumental “River Deep, Mountain High”; other hits bearing his input include the Byrds’ “Mr. Tambourine Man,” Gary Lewis & the Playboys’ “This Diamond Ring,” and Herb Alpert’s “A Taste of Honey.” In 1967, Russell built his own recording studio, teaming with guitarist Marc Benno to record the acclaimed Look Inside the Asylum Choir LP.

  • Collection Highlights
COLLECTION HIGHLIGHTS “LATINOS AND BASEBALL” COLLECTING INITIATIVE Latino baseball players have been interwoven in the fabric of Major League Baseball for years. They've been some of the greatest, well-known names in baseball history. To reflect and celebrate that rich history, the National Museum of American History (“NMAH”) in collaboration with the Smithsonian Latino Center, launched Latinos and Baseball: In the Barrios and the Big Leagues. The multi-year community collecting initiative focuses on the historic role that baseball has played as a social and cultural force within Latino communities across the nation. The project launched a series of collecting events in late February in San Bernardino, California. A second event will be held in Los Angeles on July 17, 2016, and a third will be held in Syracuse, New York, on September 15, 2016. The events are designed to generate interest in the initiative, build on community relationships, record oral histories, and identify objects for possible acquisition by local historical associations as well as for the Smithsonian collections. The collaborative initiative seeks to document stories from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico and plans to collect a number of objects that could include baseball equipment; stadium signs; game memorabilia, such as handmade or mass-produced jerseys and tickets; food vendor signs; home movies; and period photographs. Curators will select objects based on the stories they represent and the insight they provide into the personal, community, and national narratives of the national pastime. “Baseball has played a major role in everyday American life since the 1800s, providing a means of celebrating both national and ethnic identities and building communities,” said John Gray, director of NMAH.

And I said: "Constantly in the darkness - Where 5 that at? Ifyou want me I'll be in the bar. " - "A Case of You," 1971 Joni Mitchell has always been difficult to categorize. A folksinger, a poet, a wife, a Canadian, a mother, a party girl, a rock star, a hermit, a jazz singer, a hippie, a painter: any or all of these descriptions could apply at any given time. Moreover, her musicianship, at once reminiscent of jazz, folk, blues, rock 'n' roll, even torch songs, has never lent itself to easy categorization. Through each successive stage of her career, her songwriting has grown ever more sincere and ever less predictable; she has, at every turn, re-figured her public persona, belied expectations, confounded those fans and critics who thought they knew who she was. And it has always been precisely here, between observers' expec- tations and her performance, that we find contested terrain. At stake in the late 1960s and early 1970s was the central concern for both the artist and her audience that "Joni Mitchell" was a stable identity which could be categorized, recognized, and understood. What came across as insta- bility to her fans and observers was born of Mitchell's view that the honest reflection of growth and transformation is the basic necessity of artistic expres- sion. As she explained in 1979: You have two options.
