Subjectivity in American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, the Body, the Grotesque, and the Child
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Glasgow Theses Service Subjectivity In American Popular Metal: Contemporary Gothic, The Body, The Grotesque, and The Child. Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession. -

It takes mucho cojones—18 of them, apparently—to stage a giant, carnival-like festival for your first live appearance in a foreign country, and that's exactly what SLIPKNOT did in December of 2015 when they held the seventh Knotfest in Toluca, Mexico (about an hour's drive west of Mexico City). The band's performance was captured on the just-released "Day Of The Gusano" , but instead of being advertised as a live DVD or concert film, "Gusano" (Spanish for "maggot", a word long ago appropriated by the band to describe its fans) has been described as a "documentary". Don't be misled, however, for around four-fifths of its 90-minute running time, "Gusano" , which was screened in select theaters around the world, shows SLIPKNOT performing a 16-song set before an enormous, passionate crowd. (For reasons unknown, the DVD and Blu-ray editions rearrange the track listing from the audio-only release. That version showcases the group's complete 17-song set in the same order in which it was performed, and omits "People = Shit" .) The remaining quarter-hour or so primarily features snippets of interviews with unmasked band members and a handful of unidentified Mexican fans, with both camps attempting to portray the group's arrival in town as a Really. -

Suicide, Self-Harm and Survival Strategies in Contemporary Heavy Metal Music: a Cultural and Literary Analysis
J Med Humanit DOI 10.1007/s10912-014-9274-8 Suicide, Self-Harm and Survival Strategies in Contemporary Heavy Metal Music: A Cultural and Literary Analysis Charley Baker & Brian Brown # Springer Science+Business Media New York 2014 Abstract This paper seeks to think creatively about the body of research which claims there is a link between heavy metal music and adolescent alienation, self-destructive behaviours, self- harm and suicide. Such research has been criticised, often by people who belong to heavy metal subcultures, as systematically neglecting to explore, in a meaningful manner, the psychosocial benefits for individuals who both listen to contemporary heavy metal music and socialize in associated groups. We argue that notions of survival, strength, community, and rebellion are key themes in contemporary heavy metal music. Through literary-lyrical analysis of a selection of heavy metal tracks, this paper aims to redress the balance of risk and benefit. We argue that listening to this type of music, the accompanying social relationships, sense of solidarity and even the type of dancing can ameliorate tumultuous and difficult emotions. Songs which could be read as negative can induce feelings of relief through the sense that someone else has felt a particular way and recovered enough to transform these emotions into a creative outlet. This genre of music may therefore not increase the risk of untoward outcomes in any simple sense but rather represent a valuable resource for young people in difficulty. Keywords Self-harm . Suicide . Heavy metal music . Subcultures . Adolescence . Alienation This paper sets out to address the oft-cited relationship between heavy metal music and adolescent self-harm. -

Thanks for the up and down that build me until now. Universe has taught me how cruel this world is. Therefore we need to be grateful for every kind thing that happened. I‟m very grateful for I have a great father and mother who always support me. I am very thankful for all these years. They have really great patience for a child like me; a really great tolerance and point of view on everything that happened in our life. My gratitude is also addressed to Simon Arsa Manggala, S. To the lecturers and members of the English Letters Department, thank you for all this time so I could learn and grow to be the human I am now. -
