It is the fossil fuel of modern motion. Once oil became widely and cheaply available sometime between the twentieth century’s world wars, various grades of diesel and gasoline drove engineering innovation toward the automobile. Old coal drove the locomotives and steamships of nineteenth- century moving industry; now, diesel and heavy fuel oil do that work. As a symbol of freedom, power, and recklessness, the automobile has left its tire tracks on many a literary page. We’ll kick those tires and take them for a spin in this chapter. Fossil oil is not only a fuel of motion; its carbon chains appear in a mind- boggling array of materials. Anything not explicitly metal or glass oft en has some petroleum component, usually one of the ubiquitous plastics of modern life. Its usefulness is not just convenient, it is equally terrifying. Th e architecture of late- capitalist consumerism would collapse without load- bearing oil. No computers or television without oil: no Amazon.com, Facebook, OK Cupid, or Candy Crush. -

We know, it’s absurd. 20 Things F You Didn’t Know About Everything, indeed! For one thing, there are surely many more than 20 things that you—like all of us—don’t know about any one thing. On another level, it’s obvious to anyone smart enough to read the title that no book can possibly contain even one thing you don’t know about every single thing! That way lies infinity, madness, an impossibly bulky volume. Imagine the cost of paper, ink, printing, shipping. We never meant to be taken literally, so a little slack is clearly in order. But you did pick up the book. Chances are it was for one of two reasons: (1) you’re inherently curious or (2) you want to prove us wrong, because you’re used to knowing just about ev- erything. Either way, this book can be useful to you. -

HONOR AND CARITAS: BARTOLOMÉ DE LAS CASAS, SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE, AND THE CONQUEST OF THE AMERICAS Dissertation Submitted To The College of Arts and Sciences of the UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for The Degree Doctor of Philosophy in Theology By Damian Matthew Costello UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON Dayton, Ohio August 2013 HONOR AND CARITAS: BARTOLOMÉ DE LAS CASAS, SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE, AND THE CONQUEST OF THE AMERICAS Name: Costello, Damian Matthew APPROVED BY: ____________________________ Dr. William L. Goizueta, Ph.D. Committee Member ii ABSTRACT HONOR AND CARITAS: BARTOLOMÉ DE LAS CASAS, SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE, AND THE CONQUEST OF THE AMERICAS Name: Costello, Damian Matthew University of Dayton Advisor: Dr. William L. Portier This dissertation - a postcolonial re-examination of Bartolomé de las Casas, the 16th century Spanish priest often called “The Protector of the Indians” - is a conversation between three primary components: a biography of Las Casas, an interdisciplinary history of the conquest of the Americas and early Latin America, and an analysis of the Spanish debate over the morality of Spanish colonialism. The work adds two new theses to the scholarship of Las Casas: a reassessment of the process of Spanish expansion and the nature of Las Casas’s opposition to it. The first thesis challenges the dominant paradigm of 16th century Spanish colonialism, which tends to explain conquest as the result of perceived religious and racial difference; that is, Spanish conquistadors turned to military force as a means of imposing Spanish civilization and Christianity on heathen Indians. -
