Sara Ann Thomas MA (Hons) Submitted in fulfilment for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Faculty of Arts University of Glasgow January 2009 © Sara Thomas 2009 Abstract This thesis examines the subject in Popular American Metal music and culture during the period 1994-2004, concentrating on key artists of the period: Korn, Slipknot, Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails, Tura Satana and My Ruin. Starting from the premise that the subject is consistently portrayed as being at a time of crisis, the thesis draws on textual analysis as an under appreciated approach to popular music, supplemented by theories of stardom in order to examine subjectivity. The study is situated in the context of the growing area of the contemporary gothic, and produces a model of subjectivity specific to this period: the contemporary gothic subject. This model is then used throughout to explore recurrent themes and richly symbolic elements of the music and culture: the body, pain and violence, the grotesque and the monstrous, and the figure of the child, representing a usage of the contemporary gothic that has not previously been attempted. Attention is also paid throughout to the specific late capitalist American cultural context in which the work of these artists is situated, and gives attention to the contradictions inherent in a musical form which is couched in commodity culture but which is highly invested in notions of the ‘Alternative’. In the first chapter I propose the model of the contemporary gothic subject for application to the work of Popular Metal artists of the period, drawing on established theories of the contemporary gothic and Michel Foucault’s theory of confession.

Publicado por: Joaquín Borges-Triana Los que gustan de hacer headbanging y un buen mosh estarán de plácemes ante el nuevo disco de Trivium, el álbum titulado The sin and the sentence, y que es el octavo grabado en estudio durante la carrera de esta banda estadounidense. Por mi parte, debo decir que me encantó la propuesta del grupo del vocalista y guitarrista Matt Heafy, porque ella me retrotrae a la época dorada del thrash metal, estilo surgido en el decenio del 80 en la corrosiva y maravillosa ciudad de San Francisco, sitio de suma importancia para la historia del rock y del metal. Publicado por el sello Roadrunner Records, el CD contiene 11 piezas a través de las cuales apreciamos una muy llamativa mezcla entre elementos de Thrash Metal y componentes del metalcore, lo cual le confiere al fonograma una sonoridad bien moderna y en la que se consigue la unión entre llamativas líneas melódicas y el sentido oscuro característico de las tendencias extremas del metal. Según mi parecer, he ahí la clave de un material como The sin and the sentence, resultado también de los buenos oficios del productor Josh Wilbur. It takes mucho cojones—18 of them, apparently—to stage a giant, carnival-like festival for your first live appearance in a foreign country, and that's exactly what SLIPKNOT did in December of 2015 when they held the seventh Knotfest in Toluca, Mexico (about an hour's drive west of Mexico City). The band's performance was captured on the just-released "Day Of The Gusano" , but instead of being advertised as a live DVD or concert film, "Gusano" (Spanish for "maggot", a word long ago appropriated by the band to describe its fans) has been described as a "documentary". Don't be misled, however, for around four-fifths of its 90-minute running time, "Gusano" , which was screened in select theaters around the world, shows SLIPKNOT performing a 16-song set before an enormous, passionate crowd. (For reasons unknown, the DVD and Blu-ray editions rearrange the track listing from the audio-only release. That version showcases the group's complete 17-song set in the same order in which it was performed, and omits "People = Shit" .) The remaining quarter-hour or so primarily features snippets of interviews with unmasked band members and a handful of unidentified Mexican fans, with both camps attempting to portray the group's arrival in town as a Really.

    NEW CULTURAL MODELS IN WOMEN-S FANTASY LITERATURE SARAH JANE GAMBLE SUBMITTED FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD, DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH LITERATURE OCTOBER 1991 NEW CULTURAL MODELS IN WOMEN'S FANTASY LITERATURE Sarah Jane Gamble This thesis examines the way in which modern women writers use non­ realistic literary forms in order to create new role models of and for women. The work of six authors are analysed in detail - Angela Carter, Doris Lessing, Margaret Atwood, Ursula Le Guin, Joanna Russ and Kate Wilhelm. I argue that they share a discontent with the conventions of classic realism, which they all regard as perpetuating ideologically-generated stereotypes of women. Accordingly, they move away from mimetic modes in order to formulate a discourse which will challenge conventional representations of the 'feminine', arriving at a new conception of the female subject. I argue that although these writers represent a range of feminist responses to the dominant order, they all arrive at a s1mil~r conviction that such an order is male-dominated. All exhibit an awareness of the work of feminist critics, creating texts which consciously interact with feminist theory. I then discuss how these authors use their art to examine the their own situation as women who write. All draw the attention to the existence of a tradition of female censorship, whereby the creative woman has experienced, in an intensified form, the repreSSion experienced by all women in a culture which privileges the male over the female. All these writers exhibit a desire to escape such a tradition, progressing towards the formulation of a utopian female subject who is free to be fully creative a project they represent metaphorically in the form of a quest.
