We invite you to discover her southernmost countries as we sail from Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro aboard the well-appointed expedition vessel Sea Explorer. Accompanying us will be Museum lecturer, Inés Powell. She will be joined by Dublin-based horticulturist and architectural historian Patrick Bowe. Our journey begins in Buenos Aires, “the Paris of South America.” Take a behind-the-scenes look at the Colón Theater, praised by Pavarotti for its flawless acoustics, and see the final resting place of Evita Perón before crossing the Rio de la Plata to Uruguay. Admire colonial buildings and a lush botanical garden in Montevideo, and explore the fine museums of Punta del Este. Continue to Brazil, where we spend a day in eco-friendly Curitiba, to visit the well-preserved historic center, the ultra-modern Wire Opera House, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, housing modern Brazilian masters. In São Paulo enjoy curatorial tours at the Pinacoteca and São Paulo Museum of Art before sailing the 300-mile Green Coast to Paraty. Visit with artists and attend a traditional music performance in this colonial hideaway, then continue to Rio de Janeiro, named this year’s number-one place to visit by The New York Times. Discover its architectural landmarks, and watch the sunset from iconic Sugarloaf Mountain. An optional prelude at Iguassu Falls is offered, for those wishing to discover this spectacular natural wonder. Travelers who would like more time in Rio may join an optional postlude.
