On that July morning in 1983 in Clemson (South Carolina), we could only dimly imagine what the future held in store. One of the worst moment came, in fact, when we were told by th official scientific authorities that no subsidies would be forthcoming. This refusal meant that we would be unable to give any financial help to those colleagues with only modest means at their disposal. Let us hope that the publication of the Proceedings will convince certain French scientists, and the powers that be, that the study of Trichoptera represents a valid and exciting field of research. The American raid on Tripoli, which did not at the time seem to have any link with Trichoptera, threatened to act as a deterrent as far as the North American participants were concerned. However, the fears expressed by some of our colleagues (and not without reason, when we consider the series of terrorist attacks later carried out in France) were soon allayed, although the organisers of the Congress must confess to having kept a discreet eye open for any suspicious brown paper parcels or unattended luggage. In spite of these difficulties and other minor problems, the 5th Symposium attracted 89 participants from 23 countries. This success was due in part to the impact of the previous Symposia (1974 Lunz am See, Austria ; 1977 Reading, England ; 1980 Perugia, Italy ; 1983 Clemson, U.S.A.), and also to an ever-increasing desire to participate. 20 posters and 57 lectures were presented. Two field trips took place, one to the Massif du Pilat (on the eastern edge of the Massif Central) and the other to the Massif de la Chartreuse (Prealps). These excursions gave participants the opportunity to get to know the landscapes and rivers of the Lyonnais region (as well as its culinary attractions). During the frrst excursion some participants were even lucky enough to collect a few specimens of Thrernrntl gallicum McL., whose larva was the symbol of the Symposium. The guest programme was followed by about forty courageous souls who discovered the charms (hidden, in the case of the traboules) of Lyon and its surroundings with a maximum of good humour and a minimum (we hope) of wear and tear. This symposium brought together many participants from previous Symposia, but also welcomed for the first time several colleagues from the Far East: Dr T. Ito and K. Tanida from Japan, Dr Dudgeon from Hong Kong, Dr P. Chantaramongkol from Thailand, and Dr LX. Tian from the People's Republic of China. Dr Tian's presence was the result of a process which had begun in Clemson ; at the time Dr Morse's efforts had had no immediate results, but the try, try and try again principle proved successful in the end. Dr Tian was able to come to Lyon thanks to a travel grant from the Agricultural University of Nanjing, and the dynamism of Dr Liu Dajun, the President of his University, whom we would like to thank here. The scientific success (lectures, posters, and especially unofficial discussions) of a Symposium like ours depends essentially on the personalities of the participants. The quality of its organisation and cultural content (in the widest sense of the term) depends on the work carried out by the members of the Organising Committee, among whom we would like to thank in particular : Mme Chantal Roux who organised the wine and cheese workshop on Monday July 21st, thereby giving back to the word Symposium its original meaning (Symposium in Greek means banquet). Mr Bernard Cellot who was in charge of the poster session. Professor Franr;ois Vaillant from Grenoble who organised the field trip to the Massif de la Chartreuse. Michele Pariset and Glyn and Philippe Thoiron who worked on translations for the Symposium, and provided linguistic security for us and for the participants while it was in progress, thus ensuring that our beautiful French language did not pose any major
