  • The Canterbury Association
The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Each member of these eighty-four members has his biographical entry.

Canterbury Museum is housed in a splendid pseudo-gothic structure build of grey basalt with rhyolite (and trachyte) facings quarried from local quarries, and with animal faces carved in Oamaru stone. Named in honour of the building’s original architect – Benjamin Mountfort - the Mountfort gallery is supported by heart kauri columns. Originally housed in the Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings and first opened to the public in 1867 under the curatorship of Dr.Julius von Haast, the collection soon moved in 1870 to the new purpose-built building. World-renown for its natural and human history collections, it houses some extraordinary collections as well as holding regular displays from other places. Google Canterbury Museum to find the website. 2 Art Gallery. The new Christchurch Art Gallery –Te Puna Waiwhetu - was opened in 2003, before the Christchurch earthquakes of 2010 and 2011. It is a spectacular glass fronted building which is a work of art in itself. The building was used as Civil Defence headquarters for Christchurch following the 2010 earthquake, and again after the February 2011 earthquake. The gallery was designed to deal with seismic events. The gallery's foundation, a concrete raft slab that sits on the surface of the ground, evenly distributes earthquake forces. However, it sustained some damage in the 2011 earthquake. The gallery did not reopen until 19 December 2015 due to the need for extensive refurbishments and improvements.

A Bibliography of the Avon Heathcote Estuary/Ihutai Compiled by Paul Corliss December 2006 “Formerly, the Kaiapoi Ngāi Tahu [Ngai Tuahuriri ] were the owners of Ihutai, an important fishing easement located in the New Brighton - Sumner coastline area. It was part of a much larger fishery or mahinga kai used by a number of specially designated hapū and whānau groups. The owners of these traditional sites were those of the Kaiapoi Reserve and their immediate descendants. The boundary of Ihutai was bounded by the shores of the Ōtākaro (Avon) and Ōpāwaho (Heathcote) rivers including the central railway station and to a point approximately known as Avonside Girls High School, across to the Cashmere Hills and then to Pukekai Kahu (Castle Hill). This also included all of the Heathcote Valley to the summit of Te Heru o Kahukura.” Sources: Alexander Turnbull Library Archives New Zealand - Te Rua Mahara o te Kawanatanga Bibliographies of all viewed entries Canterbury Central Library Canterbury Museum Archives Collection Canterbury University - Te Whare Wananga o Waitaha Cawthron Institute Charles Berridge, Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust, Bibliography Project Christchurch City Council Christchurch Drainage Board Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology – Te Wananga o Otautahi Christchurch Star newspaper Department of Conservation Environment Canterbury/ECan Hocken Library Landcare Research Lincoln University - Te Whare Wanaka o Aoraki Lyttelton Harbour Board Manaaki Whenua Press, Lincoln Macmillan Brown Library Ministry of Works & Development
