80 Doing Theatre: Theatre Pedagogy through the Folktale Jean Small Professor Emerita, UWI Kingston, Jamaica [email protected] Abstract Theatre Pedagogy holds that cognition is body-based. Through performance the body’s unconscious procedural memory learns. This information learned through repeated interaction with the world is transmitted to the brain where it becomes conscious knowledge. Theatre Pedagogy in this case study is based on the implementation of a Caribbean cultural art form in performance, in order to teach Francophone language and literature at the postsecondary level in Jamaica. This paper describes the experience of “doing theatre” with seven university students to learn the French language and literature based on an adaptation of two of Birago Diop’s folktales. In the process of learning and performing the plays, the students also understood some of the West African cultural universals of life which cut across the lives of learners in their own and in foreign cultural contexts. Keywords: Birago Diop, heritage folktale, cognition, theatre performance, theatre pedagogy Context The Caribbean is an artificially created space peopled at the service of colonization and the plantation system. Jamaica, like the other islands in the Caribbean, has a population of which the largest percentage is of African ancestry, since their forefathers were brought as slaves mainly, from West Africa. The slaves carried with them through the Middle Passage, not only their physical selves, but their language and culture which have been passed on orally, from generation to generation, resulting in the development of an Afrocentric Caribbean culture that is unconsciously owned and practised by the general populace. -

OUSMANE SEMBÈNE’S CE‡‡O: TOWARDS A RENEGOTIATION OF HISTORICAL IDENTITY by MARGARET E. DeLONG Under the direction of Karim Traoré Abstract Ousmane Sembène uses film as a response to socio-political inequities found within neocolonial Senegal. His articulations in the film Ce‡‡o are grounded in the complex use of class terminology which is re-appropriated and renegotiated in order to critique the socio- political systems within modern Senegal. The complexity surrounding ce‡‡o reflects not just social fluidity, but a contested interpretation of social status involving historic meanings and the contemporary implications of how these historic interpretations have been renegotiated. This project discusses the complexities in the renegotiation of the social term ce‡‡o through an examination of Ousmane Sembène’s 1977 film Ceddo and the subsequent political debate between Sembène and Léopold Sédar Senghor, then president of Senegal. The film will be used to reveal the linguistic complexities ce‡‡o lends to Sembène’s resistance to Senghor’s administration through mediated discourse. The film, then, will be linked to resistance as found within African oral literature. Change of Focus—4 david murphy AN AFRICAN BRECHT The Cinema of Ousmane Sembene usmane Sembene, unruly progenitor of the new African cinema, was born in 1923 in the sleepy provincial port Oof Ziguinchor, Casamance, the southernmost province of French-run Senegal. His background was Muslim, Wolof- speaking, proletarian—his father a fisherman, who had left his ancestral village near Dakar for the south; prone to seasickness, Ousmane showed little aptitude for the family trade. It was a turbulent childhood. His par- ents split up early, and the boy—strong-minded and full of energy—was bundled from one set of relatives to another, ending up with his moth- er’s brother, Abdou Ramane Diop. A devout rural schoolteacher, Diop was an important influence, introducing Ousmane to the world of books and encouraging his questions. This favourite uncle died when Sembene was just thirteen. He moved to Dakar, staying with other relations, and enrolled for the certificat d’études, passport for clerical jobs open to Africans. But wilful and irreverent, Sembene was never the sort for the colonial administration. He was expelled from school, allegedly for raising his hand against a teacher, and ran through a series of manual jobs—mechanic, stonemason. His spare time was spent at the movies, or hanging out with friends in the central marketplace in Dakar, where the griots or gewels, the storytellers, spun their tales. Gewels ranked low in the Wolof caste hierarchy, but had traditional licence to depict and comment on all ranks, from king to beggar; the best had mastered the insights of xamxam, historical and new left review 16 july aug 2002 115 116 nlr 16 social knowledge—a formative influence in Sembene’s later work, as were the structuring tensions of African trickster stories: the narrative quest, the reversal of fortunes, the springing traps of power relations.1 Sembene was seventeen when Senegal’s colonial masters capitulated to Hitler, and was witness to the seamless reincarnation of Governor- General Boisson’s administration as an outpost of Vichy. -

LA FOCALISATION DANS LA RUE CASES NEGRES : UNE ANALYSE DU ROMAN DE JOSEPH ZOBEL ET DU FILM D’EUZHAN PALCY by KERRI ELIZABETH MCCOY (Under the Direction of Doris Kadish) ABSTRACT This thesis treats the social problems of Martinique in the 1930s. In this work, I will analyze the novel La rue Cases-Nègres by Joseph Zobel and the film adaptation by Euzhan Palcy, with the theory of focalization, in four chapters. I will study focalization, a theory that treats the problem of who sees ? in a texte, as opposed to who speaks?, which is a problem of narration. By the internal and unique focalization of a young Martinican in these two works, we will see the social hierarchy that was present between blacks, mulattos and whites during this time period, as a result of French slavery and colonialization. In Zobel’s novel and Palcy’s film, we will see the struggles that the people of Martinique experience in a country that is influenced by a mixture of African, Creole and French cultures. We will also see hope for improvement through the eyes of José, the internal and only focalizer in the two media.
