Public Review of Animal Health Legislation Updates

The Government of Yukon is proposing to update the Animal Health Act to give it the means to respond more quickly and effectively to health threats involving wild and domestic animals. The proposed changes would help minimize the economic impacts of disease outbreaks on livestock owners, introduce an appeal process, and expand the scope of the act to cover the full range of animal health risks as well as the protection of food sources. March 21, 2013) —Yukon Premier & Finance Minister Darrell Pasloski tabled a $1.2 billion budget today. “The ten previous budgets tabled by three successive Yukon Party governments have helped make the economy of the territory one of the strongest in Canada and have placed Yukon in an enviable fiscal position,” said Pasloski as he delivered the budget speech in the Yukon Legislative Assembly. “This is the fifth Yukon government budget to exceed the $1 billion threshold, more than a doubling of the budget when the Yukon Party government took office in 2002.” The 2013-14 budget has a healthy $72.9 million surplus, which will help government respond to emerging priorities and pressures, meet platform commitments and live within its means. “We will continue to develop an economy that is less dependent on government spending and that allows The Fur Show concluded on Saturday, March 16 with a display of beaver, wolf and wolverine on the catwalk. Following a long-standing tradition, Pasloski wore new footwear to table the budget, in this case a pair of mukluks made by well-known Yukon First Nation artist Annie Smith, a citizen of the Kwanlin DŸn First Nation. “I am proud to wear these mukluks for the tabling of this year’s budget,” said Pasloski. “They feature beaded floral designs, reminiscent of Annie’s many years living on the land, and a dog team, another symbol of Yukon’s rich culture.
