The Howard Mayer Brown Libretto Collection
• The Howard Mayer Brown Libretto Collection N.B.: The Newberry Library does not own all the libretti listed here. Claudio Abbado Eine Sendereihe Von Kai Luehrs-Kaiser 25.04.2021 15.03 Uhr
Heute: Rossiniana. Abbado entdeckt einen Belcanto-Meister für die Welt. 1 DG Gioacchino Rossini 2’21 LC 00173 “La Cenerentola” 479 0125 2. Akt, Temporale (Gewittermusik) Track 613 Evt. London Symphony Orchestra leicht anblenden Ltg. -

NEWSLETTER of the American Handel Society
NEWSLETTER of The American Handel Society Volume XXX, Number 3 Winter 2015 EXHIBITION: “HANDEL: A LIFE WITH FRIENDS” HANDEL & HENDRIX IN LONDON JULY 1, 2015 – JANUARY 10, 2016 The opportunity to curate an exhibit for the Handel House Museum (now re-baptized as Handel & Hendrix in London) gave me a special opportunity to think in a new way about the documents and objects that had played a role in the research for my book George Frideric Handel: A Life with Friends (New York: W. “HANDEL AND HIS EIGHTEENTH- W. Norton, 2014). In the following, I’ve chosen a few CENTURY PERFORMERS” examples from the exhibit to illustrate the kinds of THE HANDEL INSTITUTE discussions and fact-finding that occurred before and after the installation. CONFERENCE, LONDON I would say that the pièce de résistance of the exhibit NOVEMBER 21–23, 2015 is the 1731 painting by William Hogarth of The Wesley Family (with Anne Donnellan) from the Wellington The Handel Institute (the British equivalent of Collection, Stratfield Saye House. This is one of two the AHS) organizes a conference every three years, and objects in the exhibit that I had only seen previously in in late 2015, scholars from across the globe gathered in reproduction, and it is an image of great importance. London for three days of papers and discussion mostly Not only does it show us Donnellan on the brink of song centering on the main theme of the conference “Handel in a domestic setting among her cousin’s family, but it and His Eighteenth-Century Performers.” The first two also introduces us to the extended family of Richard days were hosted by the Foundling Museum (also home Wesley (1690-1758). -

The Virginia Opera Booklist 2013-2014
The Virginia Opera Booklist 2013-2014 The Virginia Opera, founded in Norfolk in 1974, is the Official Opera Company of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The company produces five mainstage productions including at the Edythe C. and Stanley L. Harrison Opera House in Norfolk, and in Richmond and Fairfax. Virginia Opera is the only opera company to perform a full season of opera in three separate mainstage venues and to reach more than 150,000 students and community members each year through its innovative Education and Community Outreach Program. The 2013-2014 season runs September 2013 until May 2014. Seasoned operagoers often do a little preparation to become more familiar with an opera before attending. Even when sung in English or with English supertitles, learning a little more will make it all the more enjoyable. So that you are more familiar with the music and stories before attending, this list includes a selection of music CDs, DVDs, scores, and books in NPL’s collections of and about this season’s Virginia Opera performances. Descriptions are from the company’s website and the NPL online catalog. For more selections for other special events and cultural heritage months, see prior years’ booklists on the Library’s webpage under the “Books & More” dropdown menu, click on “Reading Recommendations,” and on “Bibliographies.” Falstaff by Giuseppe Verde He’s rotund, old, lecherous and broke, yet Falstaff is one of the most endearing characters in literature. William Shakespeare’s aging knight comes to life in this effervescent Verdi gem, as his scheme to get rich by simultaneously wooing two wealthy married women backfires…badly. -

A presentation on the finer points of Monteverdi’s or Handel’s art can rapidly narrow to an explanation of the castrato tradition, a justification 196 for substituting women or countertenors, and a general plea for the dramatic viability of baroque opera. As much as one tries to rationalize the historical practice, a treble Nero or Julius Caesar can still derail ap- preciation of the music drama. -
