La moglie del Bey, Elvira, si lamenta con la sua confidente Zulma perché Mustafà la trascura (“Serenate il mesto ciglio”). Annunciato da Haly, giunge Mustafà, che proclama il suo punto di vista sulle donne (“Delle donne l’ar- roganza”). Mustafà comunica ad Haly il suo volere: cederà Elvira al suo schiavo italiano, Lindoro; Haly dovrà procurargli un’italiana. Lo schiavo Lindoro spasima per la lontananza dall’Italia e dalla sua amata Isabella (“Languir per una bella”). Quando Mustafà gli propo- ne di sposare Elvira in cambio della libertà, è perplesso (“Se incli- nassi a prender moglie”). Sulla spiaggia, i corsari di Haly hanno catturato la nave su cui viag- giavano Isabella, partita dall’Italia per salvare Lindoro (“Cruda sorte! Amor tiranno!”), e Taddeo, innamorato di lei, ma che si presenta ad Haly come zio della ragazza. Isabella non si perde d’animo al pen- siero dell’harem di Mustafà, mentre Taddeo è in preda al panico (“Ai capricci della sorte”). Lindoro mette a parte Taddeo dei progetti di Isabella per la fuga, poi insieme raccontano a Mustafà, per placarne la furia, che Isabella vuole ringraziarlo dei suoi favori conferendogli il titolo di Pappataci, il cui compito è dormire, mangiare e bere (“Pappataci! che mai sento”). 14 15 SYNOPSIS Act I In the palace of Mustafà, Bey of Algiers. The Bey’s wife, Elvira, com- plains to her confidant Zulma that Mustafà no longer loves her. (“Ser- enate il mesto ciglio”). Haly announces the entrance of Mustafà, that comes in asserting his strong views on women (“Delle donne l’arro- ganza”). Mustafà expresses to Haly his desire to give Elvira to his Italian slave, Lindoro; while Haly must provide him an Italian girl. The slave Lindoro longs for Italy and specially for his lover Isabel- la (“Languir per una bella”). When Mustafà proposes him to marry Elvira in exchange of his freedom he is perplexed. (“Se inclinassi a prender moglie”). On the seashore Haly’s pirates have captured the ship in which were travelling Isabella, seeking to save Lindoro (“Cruda sorte! Amor ti- ranno!”), and Taddeo, who is in love with her but claims to be her uncle. Isabella is not let down by the thought of being in Mustafà’s harem, meanwhile Taddeo enters in panic (“Ai capricci della sorte”). In the Bey’s palace, Elvira and Lindoro are getting ready to leave, while Mustafà prepares to receive Isabella (“Già d’insolito ardore nel petto”). Isabella and Lindoro instantly recognize each other, but pretend to be indifferent, even though they both suspect reciprocal infidelity. Taddeo, not knowing Lindoro, is as staggered as the rest (“Confusi e stupidi”). Him and Elvira join them for coffee adding to Mustafà’s displeasure (“Sento un fremito, un foco, un dispetto…”). Haly laughs at Mustafà behind his back (“Le femmine d’Italia”). Lindoro involves Taddeo in his escape plan with Isabella, then both announce to calm Mustafà`s fury that Isabella desires to thank his favors by granting him the title of Pappataci, which main duties are sleeping, eating and drinking (“Pappataci! che mai sento”).

We in the cello section were told to play the opening with as much stillness as possible, allowing the first theme to grow as it weaves into violins and violas, into threads of flute and oboe, and — from there — into a tempestuous section of interweaving themes. The argument descends into a woodwind quarrel, resolved by flute and oboe, decorated by horns — while the strings continue to niggle and churn away at any sense of calm. 'Then solo bassoon ignites a new, still tenser, section. The violins take over, lightly but resolutely, answered by middle strings conveying a sense of tenderness — but with a bitter aftertaste. (This is incidentally one of Sawyers' most characteristic strengths: a tenderness, never saccharine, often undermined by subtle discontent.) From the brass comes the first glimpse of escape: the powerful broken octave theme over which the other themes furiously contend. 'The cellos at the recapitulation, now deepened and enriched, are twisted by Sawyers into something passionate and grounded in lower brass, reinforced by timpani. The movement ends with the heavy brass seemingly triumphant over the strings' stubborn reiteration of the theme. Still, the lower strings' pessimism prevails. 'Tutti violins kick-start the second movement with a dramatic leap from their richest register, only yielding to keening solo oboe. 'The sobered strings leave the solo winds to mourn, yet, with characteristic Sawyers intensity, something is brewing at subterranean depths: eventually, the violas' chuntering is answered by full insistent brass, in a stormily ecstatic tantrum.

Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts, an environment for world-class artistic presentation in the Hudson Valley, was designed by Frank Gehry and opened in 2003. Risk-taking performances and provocative programs take place in the 800-seat Sosnoff Theater, a proscenium-arch space; and in the 220-seat Theater Two, which features a flexible seating configuration. The Center is home to Bard College’s Theater and Dance Programs, and host to two annual summer festivals: SummerScape, which offers opera, dance, theater, operetta, film, and cabaret; and the Bard Music Festival, which celebrates its 22nd year in August, with “Sibelius and His World.” The Center bears the name of the late Richard B. Fisher, the former chair of Bard College’s Board of Trustees. This magnificent building is a tribute to his vision and leadership. Annotation This Master's Thesis, with the subject "Enzo Dara- the legend of comical opera", deals about Italian singer Enzo Dara. In the master's thesis it is described his rich singing career, which was, inevitable, since the beginning of seventies of last century, heading to the worlds’ opera stages. The aim of the master's thesis is to introduce as well as to emphasize this extraordinary opera singer who managed during his career to deal with all his bass comical roles at the most possible highest masterly level.

    _____________________________________________________________ GIOACHINO ROSSINI THE JOURNEY TO RHEIMS OTTAVIO DANTONE TEATRO ALLA SCALA www.musicom.it THE JOURNEY TO RHEIMS ________________________________________________________________________________ LISTENING GUIDE Philip Gossett We know practically nothing about the events that led to the composition of Il viaggio a Reims, the first and only Italian opera Rossini wrote for Paris. It was a celebratory work, first performed on 19 June 1825, honoring the coronation of Charles X, who had been crowned King of France at the Cathedral of Rheims on 29 May 1825. After the King returned to Paris, his coronation was celebrated in many Parisian theaters, among them the Théâtre Italien. The event offered Rossini a splendid occasion to present himself to the Paris that mattered, especially the political establishment. He had served as the director of the Théatre Italien from November 1824, but thus far he had only reproduced operas originally written for Italian stages, often with new music composed for Paris. For the coronation opera, however, it proved important that the Théâtre Italien had been annexed by the Académie Royale de Musique already in 1818. Rossini therefore had at his disposition the finest instrumentalists in Paris. He took advantage of this opportunity and wrote his opera with those musicians in mind. He also drew on the entire company of the Théâtre Italien, so that he could produce an opera with a large number of remarkable solo parts (ten major roles and another eight minor ones). Plans for multitudinous celebrations for the coronation of Charles X were established by the municipal council of Paris in a decree of 7 February 1825.
