Artist Martyn Bates & Troum Product Name To a Child Dancing in the Wind Vendor Name Transgredient Records

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 1 of 63 Format CD Catalog#: Tr06 UPC n/a Unit Price $8.50 Ship Date Available Description "Profound songs inspired by Yeats-poems: The acoustic transformation of the deepest yearning for this release, the German 'transcendental-drone'-duo Troum teams up with the legendary British singer/songwriter and Eyeless In Gaza-member Martyn Bates. More than 2 years in the making, Martyn Bates has sung & played (mouth organ & melodica) over basic material Troum provided -- consisting of harmonic minimal loops & basic song structures derived from accordion, e-bass & guitar, percussion, who were then also responsible for the final subsequent additional mastering (adding more guitar-work, voices & balalaika). Martyn Bates has chosen to sing four poems of the famous Irish poet W.B.Yeats, and he did this with a most impressive sensitivity for Troum's very sublime & rather hidden harmonic structures. There are also two instrumentals in a more experimental style on this disc, one being a dark drone reprise of the main piece 'Mad As the Mist and Snow #2.' Martyn's voice is surely not something for everyone -- it's of an extreme emotional & yearnful quality that might be not easy to stand -- a yearning which is like a deep 'cry out to the horizon,' to something that is unreachable per se, feeling a passion that tears you apart inside. This is pure emotional poetry transformed into yearnful audible spherics!"

Its as if Maeror Tri learned to fly through ingenuity, smoke and mirrors, while Troum has taken the ingenuity, smoke and mirrors and, somehow, grown wings. Amazing stuff!" [JC Smith]

Artist Orbit Service Product Name Calm Note From the West Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt273 UPC 75390-7160826 Unit Price $8.00 Ship Date Available Description Service's return orbit finds them in an acid folk state of mind. They softly churn out cosmic tones that bore directly into the right brain, eliciting a bright reign of psychedelic sprites. Their mystical leanings steer them close to the likes of Sol Invictus, but OS zigs where neo folk zags, giving them a sonic momentum that leads to a much outer part of outer space. This beautifully crafted set smells like moist earth covered in leaves. Orbit Service's mining of ever deeper moods has yielded a subtle treasure that glows like distant sun.

Artist Ilitch Product Name Un Jour Come Tant d'antes CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt272 UPC 75390-7160925 Unit Price $8.50 Ship Date Available Description

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 4 of 63 Edition of 300 copies. Dieu has smiled upon us, for a previously shelved early album (1975) by Ilitch finally has its jour in the soleil. Thierry Müller's strange musical arc is further enriched and confounded by this exploratory cosmic release. A brilliant mix of Krauty space groans and experimentalism (see also Conrad Schnitzler and Ash Ra Temple, etc) and the progressive electronics of Igor Wakhevitch. There is some psych in the folds, and the album is tripped-out all over. Full of small sounds underneath mystical and shimmering beds of loping electronic waves. It sounds like it was made three galaxies over (isn't that where France is?). 6 tracks of deep galactics (or is it a journey through another planet's Hell?). One person's Enfer is another's Ciel.

Artist Ka-Spel, Edward Product Name Pleasure Cruise Through 9 Dimensions CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt266b UPC 75390-7161021 Unit Price $16.00 Ship Date Available Description CD: Limited to 200 numbered copies in a hand printed and assembled gimmick art sleeve. If only Norwegian Cruise Lines offered such a package. EKS's uncompromising aural sensibilities have been responsible for 3 decades of deviant melodic excellence, including about a dozen solid solo releases in the oughts alone. Unlike so much experimentalism today, Edward's ideas are exploratory without sounding noodley or samey, making each of his prodigious progeny worth assembling. "A Pleasure Cruise Through 9 Dimensions" successfully takes yet another left turn by presenting an album covered in concrete. Musique concrete. Edward has eschewed all song structure in favor of avant-garde soundscapes. The word "soundscapes" is almost a dirty word in most cases, but EKS attacks sound like a master sculptor, freeing unique and surprising sonic forms from the ether. He brilliantly decoupages electronics with emotional otherness, punctuated by disembodied voices that bubble up from the beyond. This is what Xenakis and Schaeffer listen to in electro-acoustic Heaven. Why be outward-bound when you can be Edward-bound?

Zagreb's heavy sons drill Krautrock a new arsehole with lofty, wailing, epic thunder hymns to the new cosmos. "Rock Is Krieg" says it all, especially coming from a place blackened by real war in recent times. The beauty of STS's take on prog is that it is actually progressive, in the sense that their extended, rumbling anthems express both aggression and spirituality. They translate the old Teutonic ways into a stoner/doomy metallic patois that should put the likes of Sunn 0))) and Boris on notice.

Artist Loon Product Name s/t CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt258 UPC 75390-7160529

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 6 of 63 Unit Price $8.00 Ship Date Available Description Loon's tunes cast pterodactyl shadows. The guttural guitars travel at the speed of Swans, languidly pounding out metal blasts that would make Sir Lord Baltimore scared. Their juxtaposition of ballsy femme vocals and black metal rasp generates an intense texture dynamic within the syrupy, trudging riffs. Loon is a quaking heaviness, like Hannibal crossing the Alps on Marshall stacks, though the loud is tempered with interesting production and unique arrangements. Loon's sonic crush soars with the loftiest flocks."I have no idea how this record hasn’t gotten more praise, it just might be the most underrated metal album of the past year. I think a lot of that is simply because nobody knows it exists, it’s self-released, and there’s no website to order from. Thankfully, they sent it to us to share with all of you. This Providence, RI three-piece features members of Megasus, Moonshine, Wake Up On Fire, etc. They play the best possible brand of slow, driving doom metal with the occasional passage of occult folk thrown in."

LOON was conceived of on the shores of Grout Pond in the Green Mountain National Forest by Mis Zill (vocals/guitars, former member of Moonshine, Wake up on Fire) and Anne Marie Ticaric (drums/vocals) in October of 2007. They were soon after joined by bassist Paul Lyons (Megasus) and began to write heavy, melodic songs in a bitterly cold warehouse in Providence RI. These songs are collected on the self titled debut LP released in December 2010. LOON has toured through much of the east coast and across the midwest, and plans to record and tour more in 2011.

Artist Seven That Spells Product Name It Came From The Planet Of Love LP Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format LP Catalog#: mt256 UPC N/A Unit Price $25.00 Ship Date Available Description An edition of 125 numbered copies in a custom hand printed and hand assembled art sleeve. One time pressing only on 180 gram vinyl. Rock and Love! It Came From The Planet Of Love – the second official release by SEVEN THAT SPELLS featuring a renewed line-up of Mario Peretic (drums), Turtko Dujmovic (bass), Igor Potocnjak (synthesizer), and a mastermind behind this psychedelic commune Niko Potocnjak (guitar). Turning the volume on, open your mind and think of the following: “ reinvents itself by curving and bending the time – space continuum. Our brains are quantum waves just as the sound is a cosmic wave. Musicians are transmitters not artists. Instruments are receivers not tools. To live is to die is to live on the planet of love.” "There are two long tracks on this CD... The first one, over 20 minutes long track starts in a laid back manner and slowly grows with humming cymbals. At the two and a half minute marker the rhythm joins in and begins a heavy acid rock jam. The space sounds that were introduced already on the previous album are again there to gibe the music an extraterrestrial feel. There plenty of time for all kinds of things to happen in a track this long, of course. Amazing stuff! The other track starts in an easy mood, too, but then it explodes into merciless freak out rocking. In the middle there is some more peaceful jamming. The track fades out at about 13 minutes, and after that there comes about five minutes of minimal hiss and drone. This is pretty strong album, as well, and worth buying if you’re into Acid Mother Temple styled improvised acid rock with some remnants of the 60’s and 70’s." – by Astro of PSYCHOTROPIC ZONE (Finland) "Just when I've put in this baby the trip started... straight in the brain with fuzzed out guitars, mindblowing solos, great drumming and weird noises. Let's say this CD is a big jam with a lot of nice moments that'll help you to reach a deeper high. Well done and psychedelic fans all over the planet should check out these guys... only god knows on what stuff they're. (Rating: 1+ = OVER THE TOP)" – by RB of DAREDEVIL MAGAZINE (Germany) "The band is getting more and more intense with each release." – by Scott Heller of AURAL INNOVATIONS (USA)

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 7 of 63 UPC 75390-7161311 Unit Price $11.00 Ship Date 06/21/12 Description Number 2 of 7 in a series curated by Aidan Baker (Nadja). There is a tribal element to Arc's 2 long suites that feel somewhat like being stoned in Cologne in 1971. The trios of Aidan Baker, Christopher Kukiel, and Richard Baker return to the quiet with hushed tribal timbres, however, these ambiences are riveting in a way that that other ambiences are not, probably because the group does not think with an ambient attitude. This is the sound of mining midnight. In a universe where experimentalism is often just a nice way of saying "boring," hearing seasoned musicians actually craft something interesting sans computers is like having an orgasm. There really is no compare, except for maybe sneezing, which is Merzbow's department. Vinyl editions of 400 with the subscriber editions limited to 150 copies on 180 gram vinyl and custom made book bound sleeves and signed and numbered certificate.

Artist Baker, Aidan Product Name Pure Drone (Drone Compendium One) Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format LP Catalog#: mt249 UPC 75390-7160413 Unit Price $10.00 Ship Date Available Description Number 1 of 7 in a series curated by Aidan Baker (Nadja). The album title certainly does not deceive. But there is something absolutely worthy about Baker's approach to drone composition. He employs a subtle, patient counterpoint that offers an appealing spaciousness when played loud. The music is utterly enveloping, seemingly forcing the listener into a meditative state (Do not operate heavy equipment while listening, unless that heavy equipment is speakers or a spaceship). The compelling organic majesty of these 2 long tracks wafts deep oceanic. Pure drown.

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 8 of 63 Unit Price $9.00 Ship Date Available Description To come see Tecumseh return to everything is to walk on thunder with the comforting knowledge of certain annihilation. The group treads dexterously between ultra-low-end doom and old school industrial drone. Pregnant, yawning thrums prime the pump for the annealing to come. The quiet blizzard of growling steel that appears is ferocious enough to draft hairline fracture maps upon the nearest bones. The variety of shuddering attacks makes the heavy atmosphere breathable. Dig the new breed of metallic gods.

Artist Earthmonkey Product Name Alms of Morpheus Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format 2xCD Catalog#: mt243 UPC 75390-7160024 Unit Price $8.50 Ship Date Available Description The Bog is back and Bogger than ever. His cavity inducing Krystil-clear psych riffs, suspended in jellied electronics are anything but Earthly. Peat and Repeat were sitting on a bridge. Peat fell off. Into infinity. Here's the map. Rinse and repeat. Bog has a real talent both for playing and composition. His musicks are weighted with heavy doses of classic late 60's lysergic lytergics, but his brand of 'delics are uniquely scented by the new millenium. Cosmic, deep, spiraling, melodic, contagious, sexy, weird, rock, roll, trance, pants. Earthmonkey wields these and more. The Monkey lays down on Broadway. To sleep, perchance to dream of Morpheus.

Artist Legendary Pink Dots Product Name French Collection 4xLP Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format LPx4 Catalog#: mt242b UPC 75390-7159417 Unit Price $55.00 Ship Date Available Description Issued as an edition of 300 numbered copies on 180 gram vinyl and housed in a cloth bound/silver embossed box to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the LPD. It started with a dusty box of DAT tapes. Perhaps it was years since anyone had listened to them despite the tantalising labels,"Paris #1", "Paris #2","Paris #3”... Indeed it was Paris where the Dots played their first residency in 1992. However , these tapes were a document of the Dots' one and only 3- nighter from the 10th to the 12th of March 1994 at the delightful Theatre Passage du Nord Ouest. For this special occasion, HOURS of material were prepared and delivered in the certainty that quite possibly the same 300 or so people would turn up each night. Backing up that theory was the traditional shout of "champignons" from a mystery member of the audience on each of those nights. That clarion call actually began in Montreal a few years earlier, and we STILL hear it whenever we play in that city. It was ambitious. Sometimes the band was a little shaky but songs were played that were never heard again on a stage. Even so, some of the best shows happened outside Paris. In Marseilles for instance at Espace Julien a few nights later. A big venue and a surprising large

What you hear on this collection is all from that 1994 tour culled from shows in the French capital, Marseilles and Toulouse (alas, nobody remembers the name of that venue). Even so, the Dots' French connection goes back to 1985 when they played in Strasbourg at Le Bandit. After playing in more sedatory venues in The Netherlands and Switzerland, this introduction to a French audience literally stunned every member of the band. Basically the crowd listened in complete silence as the notes were played, and would erupt like Vesuvius at the conclusion of a song. That show lasted for well over 2 hours. We still love France. The landscape, the culture and most of all, the people. We’ll be back.

Artist Silverman Product Name Time on Thin Ice Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt241 UPC 75390-7159127 Unit Price $9.00 Ship Date Available Description Featuring guest performer Edward Ka-Spel (Legendary Pink Dots). The man of silver is a master of negative space. His silences say as much as his notes. Perhaps this is how he can compose a thing that sounds like glaciers conversing. Ringing ubertones breathe sighs of bas-relief at the borealis. The Silveman's sounds are quiet and delicious, like a Rainbow Generator sinking slowly into a rusted hull. These ambiences destroy fascists. Dark and twisting pulses hollowly respirate, imitating their dying. This is the good stuff. With Silverman, the only motoriked thing to fear is atmosphere itself. Thanks to Alena Boykova for melodica on 1, to Edward Ka-Spel for percussion and tapes on 1 and for voice and lyrics on 2 & 3.

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 10 of 63 Artist Ka-Spel, Edward Product Name Minus Touch Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt240a UPC 75390-7159325 Unit Price $8.88 Ship Date Available Description Someone let loose the china doll from the cupboard again. Simply put, “The Minus Touch” is double plus good. A fantastic place for any LPD/Ka-Spel beginner to start and obviously, an essential for the Old Guard. Ka-Spel's synthedelic song cycle has a flavour reminiscent of other aeons, though Edward's manner of time travel seems to be to wreck himself before he Chyekks himself. Torch is only back-lit with the experimentalisms so at the forefront of recent solo efforts. The album could almost be considered "inside" by comparison. Oh, it's messed up. But the devils are in the entrails, with most of the album belching forth beautiful, melodic coldwave electrolytes, into gasp by varying arrays of squelchy, sequenced rhythms and electronic arrhythmia. EKS, as ever, is bard to the bone.

Artist Troum Product Name Grote Mandrenke Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt238 UPC 75390-7161427 Unit Price $8.00 Ship Date 07/15/12 Description “Grote Mandrenke” is definitely a Troum with a view. The title refers to a massive Atlantic storm that killed upwards of 25,000 Europeans in the mid 14th century (about a decade after the plague showed up. HOORAY!). Troum, of course, bathe their devastating subject in swelling waves of melodic drone and sea- walls of sound. Appropriately, “Grote Mandrenke” is cinematic and melancholy; anthemic and brooding, and distinctly shoegaze, but in a way that you can look up, and you still see shoes. And bodies, floating in a foamy miasma of silted water and fish guts. In fact, this should be on a label called 5AD, because this is one awesomer. Buzzsaw ambience and measured percussive breaths comprise a perfect soundtrack for nature's dominion over man.

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 11 of 63 mt235 UPC 75390-7158823 Unit Price $8.50 Ship Date Available Description All new studio album to be issued as a first edition of 500 copies in a deluxe gatefold CD case. Q: How do you build a Wooden Horse? A: Trees. Sand Snowman's sound hearkens back to a time when people used the word "hearkens." It is possible that this faerie acid folk is made by actual faeries, with the beautiful lilting harmonies and subtle progressive diversions that only small, winged beasties can perform properly. Gentle, with an edge; sitting atop the same cloud as the more mystical Bunyan, Perhacs, or even Bob Trimble compositions. Quiet, but lush with crisp acoustics leading hand percussion and other exotic instrumentation to the sea shore. This is truly an incredible string band, whose jaw-droppingly beautiful album will hopefully have new initiates seeking out the group's several previous releases. Beware, however, as playing this album may result in a bad case of Green Men.

Artist Seven That Spells Product Name Future Retro Spasm Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt234 UPC 75390-7158526 Unit Price $8.50 Ship Date Available Description Ferocious iron age percussive propulsion into the inner core of existential angst. STS's psych moves sound like road construction in downtown NYC; a pummeling, from which arises a sublime melodic poetry and smell of asphalt. Seven That Spells has won the spelling bee by correctly spelling Kraut with 3 umlauts, and 2 Gurus. They are not, however, an Ohr label cover band, their recipe IS leaving the strudel in the rain. After several releases STS definitely has a flavour. The unit forms up on track for track with such precision that the completion of each piece seems like a magic trick. Cosmosis floes leaving experimental eddyie glistening in the light from burning attack ships. Mechanic and destructiw, delivered with John Bonham force. Seven That Spells and seven is.

Artist Expo 70 Product Name Sonic Messenger DLP Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format LPx2 Catalog#: mt225b UPC 75390-7157918 Unit Price $18.00 Ship Date Available Description Edition of 300 numbered copies all on 180 gram vinyl and housed in a custom made book bound gatefold sleeve. What if the Voyager space craft became sentient? Would it destroy humanity? Who is to say it wouldn’t become the most far-out musician of the galaxy? Expo ‘70’s sonic reach seems to extend past even the concept of space/time itself. One Eno Eon past normal, the patter of Expo ‘70’s dark matter squeaks and moans in wave forms, like the Doppler buzz of an armada of flying fortresses piercing through the black vacuum. A fiery comet tail of piercing Kraut flavored psych trails behind. The whistles of cosmic winds commingle with acid fury as the Expo ‘70 command craft slowly leads the armada in for a truly great gig in the sky. Ambience morphs into a monstrous, heavy psychedelic blaze colour of Big Bang proportions. Eventually, the searing doom-crush folds in on itself until, once again, only the spheres patiently whisper from the deep. After which, a quantum of solace resonates with the frequency of the earth below us; drifting, falling; floating weightless; calling, calling home.

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 13 of 63 Format DVDx2 Catalog#: mt223 UPC 75390-7158694 Unit Price $11.00 Ship Date Available Description Ed. of 750 copies. 2xDVD including 5.1 audio mixes. Aidan Baker's anodyne ambiences almost act as aural dream machines on their own. But now Baker has collaborated with actual film makers for his Opus Dei, embodied in this double DVD set (one credited as Aidan Baker and the other to Nadja). Clocking in at nearly 6 hours, this in-home installation is the ultimate video aquarium for the acid-minded. Baker's thrum-scapes lay back and patiently coo mantras something akin to mid-period Nocturnal Emissions or Vidna Obmana, while spectacular visions wend and squirm from the absolutely abstract to hi-def nature photography, all to blissful affect. Some footage oozes out and away, like Cocteau Twins albums come to life, while other footage juxtaposes layers of treated imagery ala experimental films, or early Cabaret Voltaire Doublevision videos. The pieces are so beautifully mixed, often taking field footage and slowly tweaking colours, definitions, focii into indefinable splashes and spectrums. Smoke, fire, clouds, oil, water, glass, humanity and its relation to light and movement are manipulated in a million wondrous ways, matching Baker's epic garden music drone for drone; loop for loop; god for god.

Artist Volcano the Bear/La STPO Product Name Shy Volcanic Society At The Bear And Bird Parade CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt222 UPC 75390-71572-22 Unit Price $10.00 Ship Date Available Description An edition of 500 copies in a full color gatefold sleeve. A split album with Volcano the Bear and La STPO. VTB tracks 1-5 and STPO tracks 6-9. Bears and Birds, oh my! One side keeps the hot hot. And the other keeps the weird weird. VTB’s typically atypical entomological set scratches like a hive that has evolved just to the point of thumping out tribal fealties to its giant insect God-Thing. Environmentally ritualized sub-rhythms mix musique-concrete with actual concrete, forming freakishly minimal foundations for the hive of whatevers to swarm within. Noise, once again, for heroes. All this, of course, juxtaposed against France’s hidden reverse: La STPO, who absolutely let it blurt. Their pounding system of post-post-punk-neo-Zeuhl cracks the mantle, with bass lines thicker than Sequoias. And louder than screaming Sequoias. La STPO vacillates between two extreme extremes: something approximating a kind of industrial strength nouveaux bâtiments s'effondrants (German buildings are not the only ones susceptible to collapse), and crushing riffs ala SunnO))). Pascal Godjikian’s fierce grunts and barks keep the hive on the other side believing he is their God-thing. He is someone’s God-thing, that’s for sure.

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 14 of 63 Unit Price $9.00 Ship Date Available Description new project featuring members of LSD March and tenniscoats join forces to create an avant-garde-psych-contry-folk album! Folk-psych folks will be psyched about this bizarre collaborative excursion. A gloriously subdued affair, largely comprised of simple guitar arrangements, stripped-down percussion and soft singing (male and female) punctuated by bouts of power tools and gated feedback. The somber psychedeliosis is embedded in a loose atmosphere of echo and electronics recalling the beautiful ambiguity of Deux Filles; or Joao Gilberto if he fell off a Durutti Column into a vat of mescaline. Duulicious! With such a fried gamma-blues bringing up the rear, days could get lost while being reborn in this slithery tonal placenta.

Artist Phillipe Petit Product Name Henry : The Iron Man CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt220 UPC 75390-7157628 Unit Price $9.00 Ship Date Available Description First ed. of 400 copies in a full color book bound gatefold case. One lost lemonish night sleepwalking on a lost country road I dreamt that Shinya Tsukamoto was working on a blurred remake of "Eraserhead", and I was to soundtrack the grotesque mutation of Henry into an "Iron Man". I decided to manipulate and take advantage of the vinyl material to fondle crackles and released noises, to process textures and their resonances into vertiginous travellings of sound ; conjuring up flashes of disturbing black & white grainy sounds, behind-the-scenes close-ups, rapid nightmarish stop-motion effects. I embarked on a visceral musical voyage, an intricate and imaginative soundtrack gathering both organic and sonic elements and giving life to a noisy magma where unexpected clicks stumbled over interferences, where digital accidents happened and drones and acoustic resonances filled the spaces in time. The music sprang on me and got caught in my eye.

Pigs, in there? Yes, but if you count them, they will become sheep, which is appropriate as Pepe's music is like drifting into a dream. His hushed vocals sigh just beneath the melody, as if he were in camera with woodland deities. The music moves with patient strides, sometimes swelling to sudden crescendos, accompanied by electronic scrapes and coughs. A slightly damaged, spare, chamber folk-psych, whose distant cousins can be found in the darkly tender moments infused in early Psychic TV//Coil, or in the atmospheric postures of Antony & the Johnsons. "Between Sheep & Pigs," like actual sheep & pigs, is a real grower.

From subtle to superlative, The Textile Orchestra lays concrete like Duchamp fixes plumbing: what remains in the smoldering ruins is pure art. "Dream Logik Parts 1-2" on 3 x LPs plus the bonus LP "Dream Logik 3333333333333/Burning Church". Continuing off from "Dream Logik Part One", "DL2" reaches further into outer space. Eyes flutter open from their deeply entrenched nocturnes only to question the truth of the new haze before them. “Dream Logik Part Two”, like its predecessor, is a beautiful blurring of colours that weaves in and out of consciousness. Dark electronics etch out concrete foundations to a skyline of melodious transmissions from Planet Ka-Spel. Hither and non are sprinkled classic Edwardian song- forms, but anything approaching convention is lovingly broached within or followed quickly thereupon by a viscous miasma of electro-acoustics, field recordings, drones, cavernous yawns, hiss, feedback, loops, near-silence and other fractured attacks and decays. These sonic disturbances are conducted like an enormous lysergic philharmonic whose bizarre expertise and precision is utterly captivating. New found voices sneak out with each pass; while those angelically anchored song-forms slowly but surely rouse the soul to a somnambulant waltz. Cum on, feel the noize!

First ed. of 500 copies in a full color book bound case. Silverman should be given a degree in bio-melodics. This most recent body of collaged constructions pulsates with aspects of a living system. Slurred drones rush sonic corpuscles through electronic capillaries, imparting breath to each track. An obscured, parenthetical heart beat occasionally comes through as an unexpectedly metallic panging in the background, mostly drowned out by the fluid dynamics of localized subsystems playing out their various vital functions. Perhaps each one of us DOES sound a little like a Javanese gamelan orchestra inside if you hit the right spot. Cutting to find out is not advocated. Silverman’s fantastic voyage sounds like a spiritual dissertation on degrees of scale. The musical camera obscura sometimes finds purchase on an atomic level, aurally zooming into the humming orbits of individual atoms and even creeping up on the sounds of the electrons, protons and neutrons themselves. With this beautifully ambient series of orchestral maneuvers in the dark, Silverman may have found a tonal replacement for Gray’s Anatomy.

Individually Liles and Menche have torn the experimental world many new ones, but as a unit they achieve a critical mass so monumental that they deserve their own Hollywood-style canoodling name. That name: Linch-Me-Eels. The graceful ferocity that oozes out within the first few seconds is such that…well, let’s just say that if you called friends and told them you were on the moon, they would believe you. A vicious, celestial-cathedral rumble gapes its maw and spews forth into a sluggish river of electro-magma, reshaping landscapes once carved out by Cremaster Cycles and the gravitational forces of the planet Solaris. While Menche’s test-tones defying low-end slowly compresses the woofers into diamond earrings, an emerging theme for tack piano cautiously stabs at the din. And just before cowboy-robot-gone-mad Yul Brynner shows up to kill all humans, the piano slinks away to make room for the buzzing progeny of the flies, whose crescendo of wing-beats quietly, subtly rises and rises the swarm to Jupiter and beyond the infinite. After multiple listens a Xen(akis)–like state is realized and there should be a giant Star Fly-Child in your living room. Brutally cosmic!!!

First pressing of 1000 copies in a deluxe 5 color gatefold sleeve and 16 page booklet. At long last a lost experimental classic from the earliest days of the UK DIY movement is delivered from legendary obscurity. “…violent anti-music: I think this is a brilliant tape…hauntingly beautiful and totally refreshing sound.” So wrote Geoff Rushton (aka Jhon Balance/Coil) in a 1980 issue of his Stabmental magazine about Martyn Bates’s “Dissonance” cassette. Originally released as a micro-edition in the UK in 1979. For the first time “Dissonance” sees a limited edition CD and vinyl reissue, appended by a bonus disc with the 1994 “completion” of the piece. “Dissonance” presaged Martyn’s solo career and his work as part of Eyeless In Gaza in a most unusual way. That first cassette-only cri-de-coeur would have you believe that Martyn would be the next Nurse With Wound. Instead, rather like a more extreme Vice Versa or Human League, with Bates literally finding his voice, the later music (solo and with Eyeless In Gaza) evolved into a textural, fractured, DIY chamber pop INFORMED by the avant-garde, occasionally straying back into outright experimentalism (Pale Hands I Loved So Well, eg.). “Dissonance” captures, maybe even defines the zeitgeist of the DIY attitude that was rising in the heady days of the late 70’s and early 80’s. An undeniable antecedent and a true revolution.

Oh death and grief and sorrow and murder shine like a tin star polished with the bullets of Nick Cliff’s baritone croon. Yet deep in the black heart that lies beneath banjo, fiddle, slide guitar, piano and derringer; somewhere near the unmarked grave of the coward Robert Ford; in a place that smells of salt peter and rancid tonic, the high lonesome is joined by the growling din of collapsing new buildings. Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 22 of 63 mt188 UPC 75390-715825 Unit Price $8.50 Ship Date Available Description In the celestial map of metal, there is, of course, a Big Dipper (Metallica),; but there is also the rare and mysterious Scutum (One Starving Day). OSD’s obscure place in the Heavens makes for an interesting study. Almost a sort of Metal-In-Opposition, OSD’s progressive/avant-garde tactics pit the glottal plosives of black metal against cosmic atmospherics. The star compound thus formed exhibits some characteristics of the martial brutality of early Swans, with the cinematic aromas of Mogwai, suspended in an Arcturus/Isis matrix. Rasped vocals make appearances throughout, but only at intervals against beds of spacey electronics, pummeling guitars, tribal thunder, swelling strings, free-from freak-outs and minimalist drones. Which, maybe, doesn’t really make it metal after all - just a unique and visceral spectral explosion at the edge of the galaxy.

How many lives would be saved if every one had an Anal Aura Gram? Andrew does offer a sort of audio high-colonic by flushing unwanted polyps with his unpredictable attacks and decays. Liles has developed a compositional technique that makes individual sonic shifts as compelling as the music itself. The tones arise from submarine-crushing depths into the tails of comets, except when they are suddenly transported into the gut of a mountain. Or into the strangely populated belly of a whale. Harmonicas within crystals within faerie fyre? Inside every out-worldly dream-drone is a debris field of small, lovingly constructed noise stabs which strike like matches or coil like cobras. Fizzling, sighing, groaning under-carriage sounds ping and rattle in and out like the quiet clamour of an old house, next to an old church, built on an ancient Indian burial brothel. It is like listening to a hologram of a black hole devouring radio signals. Finally, time to get Anal!

Head Resonance Company’s swirling miasma of minimal electronics is more than an NDW high wasser mark; it is Teutons of fun. Their Sturm is a little bit DAF and their Drang, a little bit Liaisons Dangereuses (and their Ja Jawohl, a little bit Esplendor Geometrico). Head Resonance Company was formed not only as a musical project, but as an all out art collective, so their particular brand of minimal synth carries a pilsnered reek of experimentalism that raises their standard a bit above the coldwave rank and file of the day. Fairly revolutionary for the 1980-1984 period in which these tracks were recorded, the proto 4-to-the-floor industrialisms are cut with powerful electro noise blitzes. Fantastic synthetic sounds, beats and effects throughout. HRC uber alles! The dvd is a documentation about the work of the HEAD RESONANCE Company during 1978-1984 and 1999-2006. The dvd shows by movies, photos and music the different activities of HRC like concerts, performance, graphics, photos, also combines three other projects: the experimental vocal music project HEAD RESONANCE, the project ORGANON, which is working with classical orchestra samples and the PETER PIXEL Projekt which is working with german lyrics and minimalistic electronical german . this three are also introduced on the DVD as a part of the HEAD RESONANCE Company.

Artist Grey, Nick & The Random Orchestra Product Name Spin Vows Under Arch CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt184 UPC 75390-71544-29 Unit Price $10.00 Ship Date Available Description First ed. of 500 numbered copies in a full color book bound CD case and full color booklet. The opening growl is so like a stomache churn that an immediate restart was needed to ensure that the noise was not physiological. And thus unfolds the bizarre tonal kerchief of Nick Grey. A great host of talent was enlisted to complete this project including: Charlemagne Palestine, Martyn Bates, Jean Marie Mathoul, Jessica Constable et al. Fortunately, Nick sidesteps the pitfalls of a multi-vocalist endeavor by sewing the various excursions together to form a united whole. The low spark of fuzzed guitars, married with ecumenical drones, navigates haloed ports, each guarded by its own siren song. Beautiful, subdued vocal performances (some spoken) add colour to the clouds, as do the well drawn-out spaces in between the voices. This method of carving space has a relative in Cindytalk, vis a vis the patient accumulation of sound traveling like a carefully paced brooding force; un-tethered and given emotional exclamation at cardinal points throughout the album. By the mid section when Martyn Bates’ soulful charms are brought to the breach, Spin Vow’s quiet momentum is unstoppable and seeps in like rain water to hungry soil. There is also a playful Derek Jarman-ness when the recordings intentionally seem a little raw (and with the slight tug at the curtain offered by some well placed drops of studio banter). Sometimes voices really DO carry.

Of 500 copies available early Nov. 2008. The first 25 copies include an original drawing by Aritomo. All housed in a custom made book bound sleeve and printed inner sleeve. Look out Finland. Aritomo's fragile debut release may just out-psych the freak folk patrol, however, with subtlety. This quietly mesmerizing album was originally released in nano-quantities a couple years ago as a vinyl record, but certainly yearns to be discovered by more than a living room full of punters. There is an almost naive quality to the way Aritomo's whisper of a voice plays out against his softly lolling acoustic guitar chords. The resulting atmospheres wink at the quietudes of Nick Drake or Ryusuke Seto, though Aritomo is clearly coming from a place all his own. Simplicity is the key stone with Aritomo. His technique slithers between standard chord progressions and more organized Jandekian dissonances. Even at the most outside (which, again, presents as a subtle weirdness), the music throbs with a flickering beauty at its core. Aritomo's vocals beckon like a ghostly siren over a misty craig as his soft, trance inducing guitar echoes lure the ships in. There could hardly be lovelier rocks for a sailor to be dashed against.

XXX marks the spot spot spot. “Fleur Du Mal's” transcendental mixture of high-lonesome and chamber classicism soundtracks a bit like The Assignation of Andrew Poppy by the Minimalist Terry Riley. Boyd's bass continuo grounds the string section's rounds into a composite rock formation that's shaped like a cello but carries the stank of teen spirit. The compositions chunk along with quiet thunder and building textures; juxtaposing dramatic tension against fluid looseness, not unlike some of Moondog's more formal string works. But the pièce de résistance is the beautifully strange choral coda at the end of the line. A pleasant surprise awaits.

Only you beneath the moon or under the Jaguar Sun…” Now you’re messing with a sun of a bitch. Let’s count backwards. The second disc in this set “Quetzalcoatl” diffuses into the air an alien vocabulary of electronicesque gargles and hums. A soundtrack made from the residue left after a subterranean dowsing for the echoes of collapsing stars. These disembodied post-transmissions form up in a Minerva’s Web of sunken Titanic ghosts, slow moaning as from distant caverns. Disc one of the set, “Tezcatlipoca” is the actual collapsing of stars. Or, perhaps the exploding majesty of every day’s new sun being reborn, as it once again defeats those Xibilba’s and rises to arc through its dominion again. This monstrous soul goes from grumbling angrily to mowing the heavens. Parts even cross into early Swans territory with aggressively fractured pacing. But all roads lead to the final track which is an epic length doom metal anthem of sweating proportions. Wave after wave of crushing fuzz slowly pummel speakers into diamonds and rust. A relentless solar rotorvating blasterpiece. Which brings us to part 3 of this 2 CD set. Both CD’s have been composed to also be played simultaneously, in a much more useable fashion than the Zaireekas of the world. So, if “Tezcatlipoca” is overground and “Quetzalcoatl” is underground (or, more likely, the reverse) their combination must be all things….and no things. Maybe the sound of the end of things. Edward’s music for the movie flows with measured, stygian force; the groaning rises punctuated by that old black magic that only Ka-Spel can conjure with the smallest of sounds permeating every wave. Loops trill and sigh within virtuoso keyboard cameos. A myriad of miniature minuets thread backwards and beneath the main thematic pulses. Edward’s dark ambience is non-ambivalent, however, which gives it a life’s breath beyond the realm of film music. The album certainly generates excitement as to what images might accompany such a skewed, sonic construction. But no movie is needed to find prophet from these starry sounds.

Bitter/sweet Else (both E’s pronounced) appears to have been spat a tuberculin progeria princess from Der Himmel Uber Berlin. She has been fiendishly haunting sonic neithers for the past 20 years with a number of small run cassette and CDR releases and, for a time, as half of Romulus & Remus. “Whored” weds composerly and DIY elements into an experimentally corroded pastiche of pseudo-noise and sub-psychedelia. Her oddly wrought opuses are musical, yet remain damaged enough that they occupy a space that is not quite “tuneful.” The smaller Rainy Day Women pieces sew blown out loops into exquisite corpses of overdriven drone and pulse. The seething, long form “Horde” forms up slowly and steadily like an ever massing din of doom cascading over a distant horizon, eventually filling it. The mournful yet rising Kathode rumbles through like a requiem mass of organ and decaying electronics. Else’s beautiful noise resides somewhere betwixt the primitivism of early and shameless weirdness of early Severed Heads. Even in her reign of misappropriated instrumentation she avoids an improvisational sound. Her compositions have shape and direction. The wrongs sound strong. So click your heels and raise a baeren-jaeger Prost for the mysterious she-teuton and the Pferd she rode in on. In these hinterlands, broken is spoken.

Of 500 numbered copies available late May, 2008. A new landscape is painted out of darkness by progressive strokes of the dawn. The finished piece is neither night nor day, but the transformation itself. Aidan Baker's (Nadja) "Book Of Nods" crests experimental peaks in similarly paced sonic transmigrations. His lustrous chimera blooms open in shifting onion layers built out of slow-moaning guitar, flute, organ and drums. The resonant frequencies of quietly crashing nodes vibrate the ozone with a sub-textural beating of multi-pianic feathers. Baker's prior metallic inclinations lend in heaviness, adding a certain stylistic thud to Terry Riley-like territories, and colouring portions almost as if they were middle passages in some sprawling prog excursion. A soft eruption of synchronous sweet airs.

Also includes a bonus remix of 'Part One' by Scot Solida/Christus & the Cosmonaughts. “Cosmic Space Drone” lives up to its name, travelling into the deepest void, its gaping maw swallowing up meteoric dust and wayward celestial souls alike to fuel its endless journey into the infinite. Your journey will follow two long tracks, the first a fuzzy, electronic spacerock whiplash effect that surges and shudders, wrenching you away from the scorched earth and all that you know. Once escape velocity is achieved, you will find yourself drifting ever further from home, your only company the thrum and hum of the engines - a soundtrack for a doomed crew. Is it grim, even frightening? Yes, at times. But it’s your only hope for survival -and you’ll thank us when your friends are nothing but smoldering cinders on a world gone mad. So don’t delay! Buy your brain a ticket to ride on these tracks of tachyons, but be warned: this is a one way trip into uncharted territories where ancient machines hum and throb to the forgotten rhythms of distant long-dead pulsars. Once the polychrome porter punches your ticket, there is no hope of return - your consciousness will slowly cook in a churning, burning dark matter stew simmering slowly in a cosmic cauldron. Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 32 of 63 $10.00 Ship Date Available Description (Electro-improv album with Edward Ka-Spel.) Ed. of 300 numbered copies. Ulkomaalaiset is a rather different kind of Gharbzadegi or Fremd. In this context it speaks to a disconnection to place rather than to people. Fitting a square peg into a round hole CAN, however, be a good thing. Edward Ka-Spel united with Alena Boikova and Marti-n Heuser in Finland to herald the coming of Spring and managed to paint several startling tone poems that reflect this sense of Ulkimaalaiset. The trio settings were improvised with an intimacy, conveying both the beauty and loneliness of exploring a strange, unpopulated place. Sometimes Heuser’s piano plays against Ka-Spel’s and Bikova’s electronics with the quiet subtlety and austere sweetness of a more musical /David Tudor collaboration. Occasionally the spirits (and maybe even the ghosts) of Aho and Sibelius are inadvertently conjured. This triumvirate is so well matched that they seem to create air above mountains. Two separate releases present with four very distinct pieces of loud, quiet, and loud. Cloudbursts of angelic rain bewitching the souls of the ever wandering Ulkomaalaiset.

This Ilitchian renaissance zigs deep space experimental and zags full metal Zuehl. Electronics chirp and howl like the opening coda of Susperia, then explode into Weidorje intensity fuzz violence, cheered on by a pecussive force that sounds like Mussolini being kicked to death. The shifting interplay between total rockers and extraterrestrial missions makes this a powerful release. The concrete tracks reek of classic Kraut weirdness, punctuated by noises that could only come from the melt that is Ilitch. Brutal, tribal rhythms drift in with seering psychedelic squalls, ebbing into the groans of dying satellites. Sometimes it takes a Gaul to have the gall to create something so deliciously avant garde. Allons enfants de la Patrie, la jour d'Illitch est arrive!

Colin Potter is sitting in a room, different than the one you are in now, and he is piloting that room to the crushing depths of inner space with fellow sound artist Phil Mouldycliff. The wizard will see you now. There methods seems so innocent at the outset with the simple layering of a street scene over the sounds of intermission spill-off (or whatever), but the quiet, ambient din of crowd soon becomes a decaying continuo beneath a soft filigree of high-lonesome guitar (?). Then bells and all sorts of micro manipulations follow, building to gelatinous crescendo and subsequent diminuendo. There is a sort of oceanic, Sinking of the Titanic texture coughing up from the underneath, and a deliciously Nursey dynamic in the way tiny rings of feedback propagate out form sonic pebbles thrown in the drink. And, of course, fantastic little discoveries are made with each new pass. This may be what it sounds like when noise goes through the digestive tract. Who knew it would be so damn beautiful?

"The Silverman is one of the two remaining founding fathers of The Legendary Pink Dots and this release serves partly as a sketch book of ideas and stuff he did on a solo tour with the addition of a new 20 minute bonus track. The music by The Silverman only has a far away resemblance of the Legendary Pink Dots, like just one layer is distilled and used as the backbone of an entire new world. It could be described by that dreaded term ambient, but it doesn't justify it. The sounds inside this release are at times far too alien to be filled under ambient. It moves along many different territories, ambient, cosmic, but it takes out the best elements and it is presented in a rather own way. Music that is like a disturbing dream, not a nightmare but a surrealistic dream." (FdW-Vital Weekly)

Artist Courtis, Anla & Ralf Wehowsky Product Name Return of the Stone Spirits CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt139 UPC 75390-71488-24 Unit Price $11.00 Ship Date Available Description Black Series 3 - Ed. of 300 numbered copies. Welcome to the machina. AC and RLW skillfully dowse noisome spirits from their stony crags and carve a kind of power electronics opera in so doing. The stunning opening piece is birthed from a complete silence, out of which a shuffling hiss and a wailing drone very, very slowly rise up to a swarming crescendo, only to settle carefully back into the stoic rocky mists. This serves almost as an overture, where the textures and dynamics of the whole are suggested. Further along the way strings scream out their tortured arias over a thickly psychedelic wash of revving reverberation. There is an absolute control and sonic purity in these 6 tracks of crushing musique-concrete that gives the CD an organic light. Even though completely non- rhythmic in nature, there can yet be heard an electronic breath and pulse that coughs this thing into life and reminds that noise can still be sublime. Whether frozen or molten (sometimes both simultaneously), the din bristles with a palpable clarity that tastes so, so sweet. "Return" winds itself down in a minimal fashion that elevates small sounds into quiet exclamation marks. A tiny scratching that could be an insect losing its husk becomes a major statement; a movement further carried by the intermittent, gurgling whir of the final track. The stone spirits rock! Anla Courtis (ex Reynols) and Ralf Wehowsky (P16.D4, RLW). Six pieces of ghostly musique-concrete and fuzzed out drone.

A CD edition of what every D.M. fan considers his finest work to date. Remastered and expanded with a bonus album "Sunder", a follow up to "Deluge". What if this was really new material from The Dream Syndicate with La Monte Young, Tony Conrad, John Cale? Hmmm... 'Deluge & Sunder' is actually a surprising departure from previous explorations by Mr. Menche as the tones are generated by real live instruments (bass guitar, accordian, piano & melodica) as played by a real live Menche. The rumbly counterpoint that so well defines Menche's sensibilities is still there, but is played against, initially, a seering wall of D sharp that is built from what sounds like an extended bowing (ala Stephen Scott's monofiliment attacks on piano interiors, but more as if conducted by Dumitrescu). The latter piece is a beautiful and playful exercise with a bellowed instrument. A solid droning G has a conversation with quietly modulated tones above (angels?) and soft porcine bassy throbs below (fat angels?). Maybe akin to later Nigel Ayers or Soliloquey era Nurse, but the precedings are distinctively Menchian, and the last piece breaks down so sublimely that I found myself listening to just the end part over and over again. I'll do that sometimes when I've had too much coffee.

Now all that is needed is for Dario Argento to step in and make a movie around this album. But even though Un Festin Sagital’s name may be RIO, they are not dancing on the sand. Like little Chilean Goblins, UFS pilot their fractured UFO into the cobwebbed corners of the collective head heritage. Their skittering, rhythmic angina pays skewed homage to immortal RIO titans like Hellebore and Samla Mammas Manna, but tends to spew forth with even darker hues, like those splattered by Univers Zero, Art Zoyd and Legendary Pink Dots. UFS’s dedication to experimentation and noise in between precision timed progressive coughs could almost cast them into the same fiery pit currently occupied by many modern black and doom metal daemons. A stalwart avoidance of jazz idioms further cements their psychedelic kick into the cosmic eye and could sort of brand them as RIOORIO (Rock In Opposition Of Rock In Opposition).

Kemialliset Ystävät member Tomutonttu (Jan Anderzén) plays a bit like Dome to KY's Wire. The Ystävät-ness is there, but stripped down to the frame with a minimal synth breeze blowing through it. Beautifully lyrical in its layered abstractions, there is a sort of finely hewn composite of experimental electronics (ala early, early, early Die Todliche Doris or early, early, early P16.D4) and composerly elements (ala Rimarimba, Andrew Poppy or Meredith Monk). A few little Kraut-isms top off the tonic at no extra charge. Oh, and there's a bit that gets all spacey and chirpy like when the Virgin Prunes go completely bonkers (that's sure a helpful reference point... well, we like it). Basically, this is the music that the mothership had in the tape deck just before dropping KY off in the 12th century.

KY's medieval ministrations make the Weird America movement seem like a furry load of Clay Aikens. This latest opus plots out like a secret musical map through a Bosch painting. It is not a horror show by any means. It is the sound of losing time and of losing bearings. A microverse full of familiar landmarks, populated by improbably strange shapes and beings. This could be Heaven; this could be Hell. Who are we to say which is weirder? What if Ilhan Mimaroglu traveled with Chaucer? What if Parmegianni was in the David Monroe Consort? What if In Gowan Ring got busy with Volcano The Bear? KY's psychedelic fusion of folk and musique concrete could almost be a sketch of the birth of music itself.

Artist Legendary Pink Dots Product Name Ancient Daze CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt120a UPC 75390-71426-24 Unit Price $7.00 Ship Date Available Description A collection of some of the earliest material recorded by the Legendary Pink Dots. In 1980, the formation of The Legendary Pink Dots with Phil Knight & Edward Ka-Spel (together they have been the only immutable core of the band throughout its many line-up shifts) burst onto the British underground scene with a handful of private cassette releases appearing in their first couple years. Even early on it was clear that LPD's electro-psychedelia, though in step with the zeitgeist of the era, was never fully in phase with any given trend or genre. EKS' spare, somewhat mournful vocal delivery, paired with surreal, poignant lyrics, rich with imagery, driven home by a band that frequently sounded like acid on mushrooms, made LPD a truly acquired taste. That LPD still exist some 60+ official releases on (closer to 200 if you count collections and live recordings), is a testament both to the band's creative tenacity and to the increasing legions which have, in fact, acquired that rarified taste for LPD in the sky with diamonds. The group's minimalist aesthetic and use of electronics dovetailed nicely with the cold wave/post punk movements cropping up at the time, but also suggested something much deeper, much weirder and, in reality, not all that cold.

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 40 of 63 Format CD Catalog#: mt115 UPC 75390-7159028 Unit Price $8.00 Ship Date Available Description "With the help of Nurse With Wound mainman (Nurse With Wound) on "tapes, piano, and inspiration," Ka-Spel collaborated with multi- instrumentalist Patrick Wright on "Chyekk China Doll", a worthy entry in Ka-Spel's lengthy, involved series of solo works. As with most of his solo work, the artist moves sideways from the collapsing, queasy anarchy of the Legendary Pink Dots for a quieter but no less freaky combination. Wright plays a core role throughout, cowriting nearly all the songs and adding his haunting, heavily echoed violin work to many songs, further rendering the playfully cartoon music-in- hell compositions even more curious. The aura of fragile chamber music and oddly elegant ballroom dancing on the brief "Chyekk 1" and "Chyekk 2" and the downright captivating start to "The Glory, the Glory" are some of his standout moments. "Lisa's Christening," meanwhile, really does sound like a religious ceremony of some sort, though not exactly one which might be called a traditional Christian rite. Stapleton's ear for jarring, sudden cuts and random samples further spikes the brew at points — check the brief "Klazh, Tristurr" or the echoing rumble of "The Power, the Power" for a headspinning listen — all making a just disorienting enough combination for Ka-Spel to play in. Sometimes he submerges his vocals in the mix, but, at points, as on the very appropriately titled "The Infinity Waltz," it goes front and center, his gently declamatory style suiting the results. Ka-Spel's wiggy sense of humor helps in some of the arrangements as well — who else would whip up a jazzy, '20s-style strut like "Beautiful Naked" while still making it sound like an invocation to the beyond?" unknown author

Artist Ka-Spel, Edward Product Name Eyes! China Doll CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt114 UPC 75390-71470-25 Unit Price $7.00 Ship Date Available Description CD ed. of 1000 copies. Edward's second solo full length first appeared as the world was still rubbing ITS eyes from new wave fall-out. Synth pop had, by now, been fully co-opted by the populace at large with Wham, Madonna and Chaka Khan topping the US charts and Dead Or Alive and Paul Hardcastle making a splash across the pond. With Eyes Edward proved a couple things: 1) He really DID have a musical voice distinct from his work with LPD and 2) somehow synth pop could still be melodic, challenging, exploratory AND kick ass. On first hearing Avengelist's almost martial sequences bubble up from behind Mirror Soul's pleasantly plaintive analogue drone, I cancelled all the day's plans so I could just sit home and study this odd record until I passed out. Soon the end of the experimental Hotel Blanc suite was triggering emotional responses of longing. Eyes was...IS a unique electronic vision quest that is schizophrenic in all the right places. In those mysterious pre-internet days LPD and Ka Spel still had an almost Jandek or Residents-like sheen. Had...to...find...out...at...all...costs. It was like that beautiful Steven Stapleton cover was beckoning me personally, but also warning that things would always be a little different from then on. 'Why another China Doll?;' 'is Edward part of Nurse With Wound?;' 'who is Lady Sunshine?' Stories were fabricated to fill in the details, all with Eyes chiming CONSTANTLY in the background with its somber synths that were somehow not sad and Edward's bizarre anti-nursery rhyme lyrics. Weird samples from inside the goldmine: the use of sound on Eyes tugged at the ear and the gut. From a song to a...thing, to another song to another...thing, to a noise, to a sequence to a...run, hurry, flip the record, AGAIN! Completely minimal yet subliminally lush. A chirpy waltz to break the din, but then it felt a bit like being at a run down, radioactive circus. Best circus I've been to so far. Omnipresent little additives made for new discoveries with every listen. Edward seemed to exist in a no man's land hidden somewhere betwixt the new wave and Elysium. He's still there and Eyes is still fresh after 20 years, finally reissued properly as a CD, repackaged with its original art in a mini LP sleeve for maximum geek-out effect. Eyes, I feel for you...I think I love you.

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 41 of 63 Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt113 UPC 75390-71469-29 Unit Price $7.00 Ship Date Available Description In 1984 when “Laugh China Doll” and “Dance, China Doll” first appeared, it was difficult enough to try and suss the Legendary Pink Dots. For the few, the proud, the brave who actually had some of the early cassettes, it was apparent that LPDs had some serious avant-garde habits. For those who only had the LPD records as cosmological references, the progressive accents left a bizarre and refreshing taste in the midst of the early post wave synth landscape. So what now of all this China Doll business? Dance and Laugh shone like antebellum LPDs at the edges, but the Ka-Spel core proved a legendary dot of another colour. Edward off the LPD clock of those days had a more stripped down, economical sound. His brand of electro-minimalism, however, had nothing to do with the cold-wave synthers swarming at the time. Edward's nihilism was of a much more personal nature; his lyrics like letters to ex-lovers. Even the buzzing, addictive hum of synths at their most repetitive came off more weird than cold. Ka-Spel's melodies could often be very sweet. Very tender. Sequenced analogues, electronic swells, sounds like broken down calliopes, and, yes, an a capella track; Edward created a uniquely intimate, deeply engaging environment full of sonic movement. Always some fading loop or chirping trill or voices in the pockets. Envelopes and parameters shifting mid-song felt like levitation had finally been patented. A thus was the ante of the universe upped in 1984.

Leviathan low end growls belch a hazy pitch into the sea, rendering daylight useless to penetrate the unknown depths. Andrew's concerto for piano and reverb conjures many spirits, including that of wrathful Poseidon. The piece (in 4 movements) also conjures the spirit of nothingness. A sense of complete loneliness prevails in the echoey death throes. The faint scent of forebears fascinated with watery graves and abandon lingers from the wake of such pieces as Gavin Bryars’ The Sinking Of The Titanic and many of Harold Budd's early works, though Liles’ fitful concerto paints his submariner's demise more as a dissonant, prolonged struggle than as a melodic, majestic descent. Spatially, the work tends to build into shifting layers similar to Charlemagne Palestine, Henry Cowell's clusters or La Monte Young's Well Tuned Piano (though Andrew's work is not based on a microtonal system). The ringing resonances sometimes fan out as distinct harmonic phrases, and sometimes the notes simply propagate and clash with the reverb creating ripples of pure metallic sound, even to the point where the piano's strings melt into the sculptural, welling up more like tidal pools alongside Bertoia and Dumitrescu. A beautifully disturbing wet suit suite of sonic sound.

Artist george&caplin Product Name Things Past CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt109a UPC 753907141122 Unit Price $7.00 Ship Date Available Description george&caplin are like that oddly gorgeous bush growing in the backyard. No sooner does it seem that its sweet bloom has died back for the season, when suddenly a new sprout opens with a different series of miraculous colours. Viz, just this side of their last, Electronic Eulogy, g&c bloom with a whole new fragrance. Things Past is soooo things future. Another progressive electro masterpiece that strays beyond the borders of new wave revivalism and glitch-craft, yet, unselfconsciously draws upon the most intriguing elements of both, arriving at its own, unique musical conclusion. The bubbling switch hitting of an ancient Casio's hidden reverse pulses over sinewy guitar lines; the two voices braiding around each other, seemingly wanting to become one another. The reedy vocals accent the electro-pop minimalism with a sort of cold wave slant (though, with a bit more soul than, say, Portion Control). It would probably be more correct to align g&c with the likes of LPD than with League Of Nations as george&caplin have a prog/psych edge that makes their music something rather indefinable. Things Past's complex melodic beauty does not possess the foot stompin' immediacy of its predecessor. It's musical invention is no less powerful, however, placing it in hallowed halls alongside the great 'growers' of our times (see also the transition from Unknown Pleasures to Closer). Really, any G&C album should be listened to several times through in order to 'get it...' GET IT?! It is also highly recommended to see them live at the first opportunity as their concert interplay speaks volumes both to the group's musical mission and to the possibilities of creating an appealing and dynamic live electronic environment without merely hiding behind a lap-top. In fact, lap-tops have frequently been known to hide behind george&caplin!

Like a bolt from the blue, the saccharine rich organ drone sets the supper for this winding piece of esoterica. Take equal parts Messiaen organ atones and the beguiling, echoed baritone moans of a disembodied spirit (with just a dash of pungent myrrh pouring over a cup of the very thickest Turkish coffee) and the environs of Soriah are partially breached. This magnificent choral suite for antique church organ is paired with a second vocal suite for Tuvan throat singing. Of chaos is a new religion erected. Soriah's crushing passion play becomes a bombastic bodhisattva that leaves all average messiahs staying indoors for the second coming. Also sprach Soriah!

G&C's brand of minimal synth on Electronic Eulogy is a of another colour. Like underground synthesists of old, such as Ceramic Hello, or John Ruth, or even very early New Order, G&C's musical omniverse is a beatific one filled with lush, polychromatic chord progressions presented within a spare and melancholic framework. The wave is cold, but not blanched (as opposed to the repetitive sturm und drang of, say, Snowy Red or Suicide). An album of introspective quality, Electronic Eulogy steals seeds fostered in the glitch garden and grows them into a wholly unique and very melodious Tannen-baud. Those sweet electonyxx click, wash and whirr, counterpointed occasionally by acoustic guitar and/or vocals on a few tracks (a kind of perfectly flat and distant vocal delivery, somewhat like Dean Wareham. In fact, 'Dictionary Dream,' which happens to feature the guitar upfront, is something of a synth pop take on Galaxie 500). That's just the thing with G&C...they are like some long lost Factory or Cherry Red or 4AD cold/dark wave group, before there were deeply established camps within the synth and post punk worlds. Second Layer meets Shox? Minny Pops vs Insides? The Fast Set has a scone with early Arms Of Someone New? The opening 'Promenade,' with its brilliantly twisted boomerang timing structure and analog buzz, is like some kind of electro-crack. Of course, this bodes well for humans, too. Augmented by all the dog friendly moments is a double album of sprawling musical invention. Record one births gently into a lo-fi-adelic Comus-like saline that even might even win over the Devendra crowd, if the Devendra crowd had ingested just a little too much mushroom tea on that day and left their ironic trucker hats at the door. Song becomes fever dream and then pitches into a barren place of low estate and low chanting whose Residents might well be Eskimos. With typical minimalist pageantry, VTB mutate from piece to piece, punctuating along the way with surprise sounds that the aforementioned dogs love so well; the kinds of quirks that make Nurse With Wound and P16.D4 records such fun listens. VTB spin some very melodious tales, which are subliminally hooky, after a fashion. Spiritual and surreal are sisters. Quiet ritualism queues with dadaistic and with progressive harmonies, together on the same fractured, out world, sing-along journey. And that's just record one. Record two crawls slowly from the echoey ooze, grows legs and then presents as a different and, in many ways, more dramatic creature. A long, shifting organ drone becomes a deeply psychedelic statement that bleats loud and strong like an acid bleached Spiral Insana or a sneaky .

He then sent this delicious sound casserole, one each, to Jim O'Rourke, Cyclobe and Irr.App.(Ext.) and asked that they bake said casseroles in their own sonic ovens. The 3 separate sound casseroles were then returned to the NWW kitchen where Chef Steve added just a dash of this and a pinch of that. Brunnen reveals that part of Beequeen's Freek Kinkelaar which is the strange wandering minstrel/alchemist (half-orc cleric with a +2 mace). If only more records were so cogently perplexing. A slightly cinematically arranged, quasi-psychedelic little dear of a hushed pop song opens the album. Freek's vocals sublimate in a pleasant whisper, not unlike (ahem) a quieter Yo La Tengo song. Freek, perhaps true to his name, does not hesitate to then very, very slowly weave together a spacious tone poem whose initial notes live counties apart, concocting an outré sort of high lonesome that might sonically drift across the same sort of plain as Wenders' Paris, Texas does visually. Kinkelaar's vocal delivery tugs at shirt tails ala Just Drifting era Psychic TV balladry or introspective LPD. Subtly amplified guitars chime quietly against slo-mo keyboards, occasional samples, tablas and air. An understated rave-up of Trust In Me from The Jungle Book is a nice exclamation point. A musical sandwich, really, with the outer psychedelic pop buns keeping the avant-garde middle meat warm.

In the midst of the world's fascination with so-called Electroclash, leave it to the old school to really show what post-punk is really about, while simultaneously turning the concept on its fractured head. LA STPO has the finesse and invention and the je ne c'est quoi to massage its victims into a quiet trance, only to pummel them seconds later. Slices Of Throw Time is like a Van Der Graaf arc between the bombast of Blurt/Ex/Dog Faced Hermans/Contortions/Birthday Party and the subtle, avant-composerly moments of Henry Cow/This Heat/Univers Zero/Faust. The punchy rhythm section, abetted by the squawky horns, makes for a music to which one can truly contort. LA STPO's musical muscle, however, is always backed up by solid jazz/classical informed chops that can and will chop any lesser outfit into nothing more than a pile of over-loud dust. LA STPO infuses their punk with dynamics of both volume and texture, producing a slightly zeuhl flavoured post rock, which should, by all rights, land Slices Of Throw

Artist Waldteufel Product Name Sanguis CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt069cd UPC 75390-71415-28 Unit Price $10.00 Ship Date Available Description After more than three years of research & development, WALDTEUFEL finally deliver their new opus: SANGUIS. First conceived as a 12”, it has since blossomed into a full-length album. SANGUIS features lyrics by two nearly forgotten German personalities – Stefan George & Alfred Schuler, who can be considered the two opposite poles of the ‘Cosmic Circle,’ a group of mystically inclined German authors that were active in Fin de Siecle Munich– as well as lyrical fragments from the ancient Indian Vedas. Musically, it runs the gamut from dense hypnotic atmospheres, ritual passages to metallic chants and triumphant percussion-heavy hymns. It is the most adventurous and varied WALDTEUFEL work so far, and expands and deepens the themes explored in the first album “Heimliches Deutschland.” The instruments used include everything from accordeon, violin, wood percussion, horns to electric guitar, and that most archaic instrument of all: the voice.

Artist Whitelodge Product Name Whitelodge+ CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt067b UPC 75390-71461-27 Unit Price $4.00 Ship Date Available Description A great billowy poltergeist, Whitelodge is a musical revelation. The Lodge skirt borderlands between the mysticism of seething "post rock" and the dark textures of latter day "apocalyptic folk," managing in the end to sovereign a musical nation of their own. Somber musical expressions exude surprisingly powerful punch and often carve modest stones into towering columns of sound, which, while not actually loud, seem to IMPLY loud. Constructed somewhat like a record, the quietly crafted combination of acoustic guitars, electric piano, bass and electronics effuse scents of Sol Invictus ("Against The Modern World"), Gastr Del Sol, Sea And Cake, Insides, late late period Swans, Roseclouds era Death In June with a little "Another Green World" style Eno plastering the cracks...but none of these really captures the true essence of the Lodge what is White. Where apocalyptic folk often drowns in its own cheesiness, Whitelodge rise above and avoid trying to force any sort of posturing or false celticisms into their music. Whispered vocals reincarnate a host of spirits from Red House Painters to Coil, driving the compositions home by inference rather than the obvious. This music is unbelievably tangible in its etherealness. A deep beauty resides within and repeated listens open endless blossoms. This album is also guilty of having at least a couple downright infectious tracks that are so brilliantly cooked as to be virtual tonal crack. The Grand Poobah beckons: become one with the Whitelodge!

These songs are of a different sort of bitch; the sort of bitch which we sometimes like to call free jazz improv. And, no, not fruity, directionless meandering. This is improv played by players who are so empathetic with one another it would not surprise me if they occasionally got conjugal with one another. For one, the drumming is dead brilliant. It's loose but holds together as a perfect structure for the other voices to swim around. Kind of Han Bennink-ish (Joey Baron with Masada also comes to mind). In fact, this release would not be unusual for Incus or ICP. Is that a cello I hear being played with a fan? A prepared guitar perhaps? Is that the sound of a bow being beaten on the strings? You get the picture...or do you? The group plays around with space, music, noise and texture. Sometimes they will come from out of disparate and thin conversations and end up in a very solid and swingin' groove and then to creep back into their own separate corners. The strings are played with a very Derek Bailey flavah, which is to say there is lots of technique employed to bring out as much sonance as the instrument is capable of without necessarily playing notes, although notes are employed as well. The group really has a masterful feel for when to thrash and when to shut up. Very dynamic, though largely subdued. And then there are those weird Nurse With Woundy asides where there are the hummings and the whisperings and the weirdnesses. Oh, by the way, did I mention that this group happens to contain 2 members from VOLCANO THE BEAR. Who knew?

Artist de Kleer, Martijn Product Name So Close Yet So Far Out CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt055a UPC 75390-71458-23 Unit Price $7.00 Ship Date Available Description And yetter still, so wonderful. This inaugural solo jaunt by Legendary Pink Dots guitarist/bassist/violinist Martijn de Kleer betrays a love for freeform freakouts of the 60's, with a special emphasis on the mellow, acid drenched stylings of the West Coast underground of the late 60's. All the I's are microdotted and all the mushroom teas crossed as Martijn's guitar gently seeps, crawls, oozes, boils and burns. And even though Martijn's Dotted past is in some evidence, this is hardly an LPD Karaoke album. This is a fully fleshed out beast of original design. Martijn's vocals occasionally punctuate the parade, but the majority involves instrumental clusters, some based in rock form and others more like giant swelling clouds, all thick with psychedelia (acid rain?). Besides the requisite fuzzing guitar (see also Damon and/or Helios Creed), Martijn employs such merry men as Ryan Moore (Twilight Circus), Raymond Steeg (Girlfriends, Legendary Pink Dots, Beequeen), Phil Knight (Legendary Pink Dots) and Cevin Key (, Download, Tear Garden), oh and a chorus of Himalayan children singing all vocals on the 26 minute acid mind tripper ‘The Apple Crumble Trail’. A beautiful production that is filled with sonic surprises at every turn and is sure to make any day trip, erm, trippier. 8 tracks over 2 albums, exactly the way any good psych record is supposed to be, damnit! The finale is a particularly rewarding climb to Heaven on a honeyed ladder, from which view is all poppies, beautiful poppies, and the sound is perfectly Kleer.

Yes, the unstoppable Peat Bog has once again raised his pulsating colours and thrown himself, and us, into a cosmic oblivion. And though scientists have recently proven that a person can swim as quickly through syrup as through water, syrup is still the more delicious swim. And syrup is the pool that Peat offers up for your musical laps. This latest has both kinds of music: stoned and stoneder. The record opens with a kind of Duulish slow groove that one might find useful while laying in the middle of a field staring at clouds. Before long, one is laying in the middle of a cloud staring at fields. Peat's production shows that his sixth form spent in Nurse With Wound school paid off. All the tracks are quietly layered with subtle backdrops, voices and swells of thick fuzz. As ever, however, no matter how close Peat brings us to a need for rehab, Earthmonkey is fat with rhythm and even the occasional need to, perhaps, ever so slightly, bang the head. A nice electro punker in the middle not only invokes the spectre of Chrome, but is also sure to grow a thicker, healthier mullet faster than any other traditional hair remedy. Looking for that modern something a little 2066-And-Then-o-licious and also a little Galactic-Supermarket-o-rama? Earthmonkey is your Kraut-tastic choice! A shalabast'r tyde, like unto pantent leather shoes, really doth shyne up. Reflected in the waves are twinkling stars; a smirking harvest moon; herds of passing clouds and hazey pink dots, like legends burned against eyelids after a long stare into an errant brightness. Ka-Spel's penchant for musical procreation is further fathered via this, another outstanding experimental recording. Fading into a subatomic rumble, "Shalabast'r" sneaks into a quiet Edwardian waltz that sneaks into a fragmented sampling autoclave. If nothing else, Edward's always been a little sneaky. Maybe that's why he wears sneakers. At any rate, his cosmic overdoses are more subdued than the psychedelic damage inflicted by the full LPD ensemble, but virtuoso electronic manipulation combined with an ever deepening voice fosters a tonal child who's prodigious growth is enough to rattle the bones of mothers. And when Pandaemonium seems ready to pour out, angels appear, in the form of a vocal scented breeze that feels like walking out into the quiet stasis of sunlit, rain wet streets after a night of storm. Refelcted in the pools are leafless trees; shards of morning glow; herds of pasing clouds and a perfectly mysterious face.

La STPO was borne into this miasma of mediocrity with knives out. They have remained bastions of outré ever since their bloodied birth. Vive La STPO! To celebrate two decades of one of the finest, most fractured and indefatigable European avant post punk bands, BlRR has nailed together this 11 track retrospective of 7300 days in the life of La STPO. And rather than trying to shape this into some sort of "best of" or "greatest hits," BlRR and La STPO have done the reverse by leaning more heavily in on the group's more exploratory moments. This also makes for a better album that, in its own skewed way, fits together as if all recorded in the same session. As presented here, La STPO are truly Rock In Opposition. Unlike their Zeuhl spewing forbears, however, STPO are not trying to fuse jazz and rock. Their rock is in opposition of all things safely established, including Rock In Opposition. Jagged and bleated arrangements with familiar rock instrumentation clash to form screaming, dada-pregnant, contorted punk concertos. Oddly timed and full of changes, this is music to fall down escalators to. Sometimes this is music to lay at the bottom of escalators to. Just as your fingers begin to snap, STPO leaps off the page into a droning menace. A cadence of broken buzzsaw guitar hums ejaculate into soft and staggering staccato strings. La STPO's propensity for quiet tension gives the tumult of their caterwauls that much more weight. The vocalist is as likely to coo and chirp as he is to chant and caw. Reeds, vibes and trumpets walk freely with the rest, making this as dynamic and interesting a record as one could hope for in this hopelessly meandering post rock era. Any group that can take The Ex to task and come out singing an aria afterwards is certainly worth falling down an escalator for.

Artist Green Milk from the Planet Orange Product Name He's crying Look CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt046a UPC 75390-71455-26 Unit Price $7.00 Ship Date Available Description Green is the colour of my true love's milk. The Planet Orange (Japan, of course) has at last offered up some of her precious Green Milk. And rather than being a rancid earthbound batch of lactose, this freshly squeezed life's elixir is vitamin enriched with pure psychedelic electricity (and iron). As if their demo wasn't awesome enough, GMFTPO went and repasteurized the whole opus dredging even more cosmic cream to the surface making for some lofty latte. Where Acid Mothers Temple's jammy wanderings sometimes lead them astray, lost in a fog of their own screeching residue, GMFTPO's controlled madness leaves behind a resin that won't give you a headache and will have you feeling fresh in the morning. Their music, while loosely played, is steady and deliberate and its Eastern flavouring early on reminds a lot of Erkin Koray's best moments as well as churning up a little subdued Can of butter (circa Damo, where the bass plays a forward melodic role with whispered vocals, ala "Mother Sky"). The album curdles, in places, to White Heaven-like outbursts and ferments into a couple extended excursions toward the great space udder. Being explorers, GMFTPO like to occasionally get their slide rules out, which results in well placed mathy breaks rather akin to Mice Parade. I'd also like to mention early Morsel, but you don't know who that is, so never mind. Overall, an excellent modern psych album best suited for those who enjoy chilling out while taking their glaucoma medicine. Don't cry over spilled milk. Soak yourself to the marrow. GMFTPO is proof positive that the milk is always greener on the other side.

Artist Earthmonkey Product Name Audiosapien CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt038 UPC 75390-71453-28 Unit Price $7.00 Ship Date Available Description First and foremost, Earthmonkey has the word "monkey" in its name, and everyone loves monkeys! OK, maybe you need a little more than just a quality simian reference. The gangly orangutan behind Earthmonkey happen to be Peat Bog (Nurse With Wound, Inflatable Sideshow) with production and sound samples by Steven Stapleton. Simply put, you will go bananas for this one and might even find yourself chanting, to quote a friend of ours when he gets very excited about something, "MONKEY, MONKEY, MONKEY!" Go ahead, say it now---you'll feel exhilarated and will notice that you have become ever so slightly more hirsute. Now, we naked apes live in a world where the term "psych" is thrown around with such frequency that it seems to mean little more than "weird guitars," which is everything nowadays, and could well mean Cher for that matter. So, when we say "psych" in relation to Earthmonkey, we mean Monks. We mean Bonniwell Music Machine. We mean Wolfgang Dauner. We mean Amon Duul II. We mean Taj Mahal Travelers. We mean a bunch of other stuff that Earthmonkey wishes we mentioned but did not. Earthmonkey DOES have weird guitars, and organs, and percussion. But it also has that unnamable, freely streaming "other" quality that sets it apart from being a somewhat avant-garde rock record. The music is, well, music. It's very outré, but is nonetheless bounded by time signatures and melody (These, however, are not ties that bind, rather, they are ties that will get you high). Earthmonkey is dark, droney, deep and , dare we say, groovy. The music walks along through a thick fog of Peat and signature NWW will-o-the-wisp squeaks and squeals. Each of the 10 tracks follows brilliantly from the last, with certain tracks gaining enough momentum to peel all your 'nanas. In fact, the curves and turns of this release are so perfectly wrought that we think the songs may actually now be part of our body. Maybe we are experiencing devolution. THANKS EARTHMONKEY! Unlike many other modern acts, Earthmonkey's members do not sound like they are trying to make a trippy record, they just do...and it just is. It sounds like a bunch of stoned marmosets got together and actually managed to type the complete works of Shakespeare. So don't delay, bring a gibbon or two into your home. Don't be a chump...be a chimp! MONKEY, MONKEY, MONKEY!

"La STPO stands for "La Société des Timides à la parade des Oiseaux". that means "the shy peoples society at the parade of the birds". This sixpiece French ensemble has been around since the mid- eighties, and operates in the area somewhere between Etron Fou axis and Neo-chamber styles, applying humor, avant-gardisms, ultra high energy theatrics, and a well rounded eclectism. They cover a pretty wide field of material within those realms, using guitars, bass, contrabass, drums, percussions, saxes, mallets and synths, plus a lot of unusual stuff like balafon and viola de gamba. Definitely EFL territory, and although vocalist Pascal Godjikian is nothing short of excellent in variety of styles, and musicianship is top notch all around, this is still fairly extreme music that is probably more excessive and explorative than most would be comfortable with in their daily musical diet. Still, for those who know this style of music and love it, STPO is the ticket. Recommended for the intrepid explorers, not the Marillion crowd." Peter.Thelen-EXPOSE-USA

Artist Stimulus Product Name A Motion Signal CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: mt001b UPC 75390-71445-29 Unit Price $5.00 Ship Date Available Description Repressed and available again! "A tight knit hybrid of experimental & progressive music. Repetitious tonalities (croaking textures, tempered guitars, sparse, resonant bass) dive into a sand blasted piano denouement, introducing one to the taut, kinesthetic dynamics utilized by Stimulus. Each track is constructed around repetitious cadences upon which disparate textures twitch & spasm. The muffled, steel wool scrubbed, looped rhythmic impetus is shattered as agitated streaks of fluorescent light hover & screech like flaming electronic pterodactyls. Though they utilize a love of 'Nurse With Wound, '70's Italian Prog, Iron Maiden & field recordings' as inspiration, Stimulus move well beyond, exploring sonic territories uniquely their own." -Alternative Press

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 60 of 63 Twilight, mastered by Grammy-award-winning engineer Matt Sandoski, explores dark, brooding territory with near-telepathic interplay. Seamless from start to finish, this eleven-song cycle sustains an ominous, slow-loping ambience suitable for doomsday -- or at least a rainy-morning shag. Twilight is a journey through lavish, woeful soundscapes populated by jilted lovers, sleepless nights, and friends that are friends no more. Masterfully arranged and orchestrated, the album envelopes the listener in a seamless world of soaring peaks and dismal, barren wastelands. Hope is absent, and the anger of youth has been replaced by melancholic acceptance of the world's hastening plummet at the hands of man. The album's pristine production, handled by both the band members and Grammy Award-winning engineer Matt Sandoski, blurs the line between listener and performer. Around every bend are sonic explorations that create a moving and shared experience.

Artist Edward Ka-Spel Product Name Caste O'Graye Skreeens CD Vendor Name LPD Format CD Catalog#: con-chi01 UPC 5021958412429 Unit Price $9.00 Ship Date Available Description "LPD's frontman has delivered his solo release for 2001 rather late, but the wait (if you consider it a wait as the volume of material from LPD and related projects exceeds everyone else) was worth it. 'Caste' is a one-track CD with a multitude of songs or 'movements'. The phases evolve over the course of 50+ minutes from pulsating drum machine and vocal plays, creepy ambient horrorscapes, cut-up samples and distorted noises, familiar Ka-Spellian anthemic calliope music, and the occasional playful keyboard ditty. Various points seem to either hark back to the more sound-based (as opposed to song-based) LPD or pay tribute to Neu!, Residents, and the more experimental era. Thankfully, there isn't a weak link in the chain: unlike many of the solo Ka-Spel discs, this one is absent of the occurance of a nerve-grating piece which goes on way too long. I haven't counted the amount of movements in the disc yet, but it's safe to say that if there's anything on here you're not getting into, just wait a couple minutes and it'll all shift gears again." - label press

Behrens, C. Renou, Humectant Interruption. Tribryd is a journey through that body. There is, of course, the body of time spent creating Tribryd. There is the body that is the three part realization of Tribryd. And then there are also the individual bodies of sound and vision that both unite into a whole, but also operate as bodies unto themselves. The cues inspired in these sound artists are a rare synchronicity, whereby the Tribryd CD is an unbelievably cohesive and moving body of organic sound. Compilations can be notoriously uneven, but HMS Tribryd is a solid vessel from stem to stern.

Beta-lactam Ring Wholesale Catalog ***RE*** Page 61 of 63 Product Name Osmose CD Vendor Name Beta-lactam Ring Records Format CD Catalog#: blur01 UPC 753907141320 Unit Price $7.00 Ship Date Available Description Ariel Kalma's magical and weird Osmose originally released in 1978 masterfully matches Richard Tinti's rainforest field recordings with Ariel's left field minimalist compositional ideas. Rather than simply relying on the rainforest sounds providing a pleasant backdrop to the drones, the drones interplay with the pitches of the natural sounds to create melancholic, Popol Vuh like grandeurs. The natural chirps and creaks blend with the music to become similar to ambient loops themselves; such that their very tonal nature shifts from being recognizable jungle sounds, frequently phasing into blurred rhythmic elements under the electronic parts. Ariel's musical minimalism avoids being serialist or academic, despite being part of the INA GRM studios for many years. So, neither is it concrete like Parmeggiani or Risset, nor is it classical like Philip Glass or Michael Nyman. If anything, Ariel's music is deeply cosmic, sometimes even a bit psych, ala the great Krauts of yore: old Tangerine Dream, Sand, Cluster etc. His cathedral like tones and running counterpoints actually give the rainforest noise a sinister edge. The music absolutely subverts the traditional idea of the rainforest as that of a happy hunting ground for cause riddled yuppies with Benzes full of Kruggerrands. Osmose reminds that not only is the rainforest a place of awe inspiring beauty, but it is also something very dense and alien. It is a place of removal; it is a place of isolation; it is a kind of inner space; it is an extraordinary and surreal church of sorts; and it is deadly. The album has a progression that's almost a story in toto, where the next rise is finally crossed revealing the huge, seemingly impenetrable expanse of lush greens. The expanse is then explored with wide eyed wonder until the guide dies and the companions start succumbing to fever, ague, snakes and unseen primitives at home in the shadows. Appended by 3 previously unreleased tracks from the same sessions, this reissue finally allows the rainforest to live up to its natural state of untamed jungle.
