4. Northern England 1. Progress in Hell Northern England was both the center of the European industrial revolution and the birthplace of industrial music. From the early nineteenth century, coal and steel works fueled the economies of cities like Manchester and She!eld and shaped their culture and urban aesthetics. By 1970, the region’s continuous mandate of progress had paved roads and erected buildings that told 150 years of industrial history in their ugly, collisive urban planning—ever new growth amidst the expanding junkyard of old progress. In the BBC documentary Synth Britannia, the narrator declares that “Victorian slums had been torn down and replaced by ultramodern concrete highrises,” but the images on the screen show more brick ruins than clean futurescapes, ceaselessly "ashing dystopian sky- lines of colorless smoke.1 Chris Watson of the She!eld band Cabaret Voltaire recalls in the late 1960s “being taken on school trips round the steelworks . just seeing it as a vision of hell, you know, never ever wanting to do that.”2 #is outdated hell smoldered in spite of the city’s supposed growth and improve- ment; a$er all, She!eld had signi%cantly enlarged its administrative territory in 1967, and a year later the M1 motorway opened easy passage to London 170 miles south, and wasn’t that progress? Institutional modernization neither erased northern England’s nineteenth- century combination of working-class pride and disenfranchisement nor of- fered many genuinely new possibilities within culture and labor, the Open Uni- versity notwithstanding. In literature and the arts, it was a long-acknowledged truism that any municipal attempt at utopia would result in totalitarianism. -

Rückkopplungen Aus Dem Zodiak Free Arts Lab
BILDET NISCHEN!

Ambient Music
Înv ăţământ, Cercetare, Creaţie (Education, Research, Creation) Volume I AMBIENT MUSIC Author: Assistant Lecturer Phd. Iliana VELESCU Ovidius University Constanta Faculty of Arts Abstract: Artistic exploration period of the early 20th century draws two new directions in art history called Dadaism and Futurism. Along with the painters and writers who begin to manifest in these artistic directions, is distinguished composers whose works are focused on producing electronic, electric and acoustic sounds. Music gets a strong minimalist and concrete experimental type, evolving in different genres including the ambient music. Keywords: ambient music, minimalism, experimental music Ambient music is a derivative genre of electronic music known as background music developed from traditional musical structures, and generally focuses on timbre sound and creating a specific sound field. The origins of this music are found in the early 20th century, shortly before and after the First World War. This period of exploration and rejection of what was classical and traditionally gave birth of two artistic currents called in art history, Dadaism and Futurism. Along with painters and writers manifested in these artistic directions were distinguished experimental musician such as Francesco Balilla Pratella, Kurt Schwitters and Erwin Schulhoff. This trend has had a notable influence in Erik Satie works which consider this music as „music of furniture” (Musique d'ameublement) and proper to create a suitable background during dinner rather than serving as the focus of attention1. The experimental trend has evolved at the same time with the „music that surrounds us” which start to delimitated the cosmic sounds, nature sounds, and sound objects - composers being attracted by sound exploring in microstructure and macrostructure level through the emergence and improvement of acoustic laboratories or electronic music studios as well as Iannis Xenakis, Pierre Boulez, Karl Stockausen. -

Victo CD 015
LINDSAY COOPER Oh Moscow Victo CD 015 Oh Moscow was conceived by Lindsay Cooper and Sally Potter in 1987, when superpower confrontation seemed ever lasting; walls had already fallen when this performance was recorded at the Victoriaville (Quebec) Festival in 1989. But separation and reconciliation are transcendent themes for any song cycle and Potter’s direct verses consider the wider issue of European postwar divisions. There is outrage at the wealth squandered on military confrontation while the lessons of 'mother Russia’ are neglected in favour of more appealing American cultural imports. She sings her texts with moving commit ment and is joined by the inimitable Phil Minton, who in The Allies' parodies the entire voice of America from Elvis to ' Donald Duck. Lindsay Cooper’s musical sensibility borrows from Weill, Westbrook and the Trio Bulgarka to avoid American accents; her own playing on bassoon and saxes is resolutely Eastern. But the impact of this music would have been more incisive without so many rhetorical interludes for the instrumentalists. Pianist Elvira Plenar’s interlude of Tayloresque Tartary is impressive but, like Alfred 23 Harth’s screaming sax, too predictable in this context. Marilyn Mazur's drum solo in 'Liberty Bonds' is, conversely, a model of economy and caps the best music of the cycle. Chris Clark Lindsay Cooper FOR BASSOON ANDA FILM page 20 The comic, but also mollifying 'West Side Story' that David Thomas tells/sings on the flexidisc in last month's V IN Y L has an un expected intermezzo on bassoon. It is played by Lindsay Cooper, who accompanied Tho mas on his tour in Holland.
