Months before the firing on Fort Sumter, southern forces at nearby Pensacola (Florida) worked to find a way of seceding from the Union without initiating bloodshed. This lesson is based on the National Register of Historic Places registration files "Fort Pickens" and "Fort Barrancas Historic District" and on historic structure reports for both forts. The lesson can be used to teach units on the Civil War. Fort Pickens and the Outbreak of the Civil War The peaceful surroundings--white sugar-sand beaches, clumps of golden sea oats, and the soothing sounds of coastal waves pounding on the shores of a long barrier island--belie the serious purpose of Fort Pickens, located on Santa Rosa Island in Florida. One of the largest brick forts built in the United States, Fort Pickens provided the setting for a serious effort by a small group of men to avert or at least postpone the outbreak of the Civil War. It was written by Ann Marie Folker, a Park Ranger at Gulf Islands National Seashore. The lesson was edited by Fay Metcalf and the Teaching with Historic Places staff. Where it fits into the curriculum Topics: This lesson could be used in teaching units on the Civil War in U.S. history. Time period: 1820s-1860s Objectives for students 1) To describe events in the region of Pensacola, Florida, that preceded the Civil War. 2) To examine the role of Fort Pickens prior to and during the Civil War. 3) To evaluate decisions made by key individuals in Pensacola in 1861, and to describe the consequences of those decisions. 4) To investigate the impact of military installations in their own community. Materials for students The materials listed below either can be used directly on the computer or can be printed out, photocopied, and distributed to students. 1) one map of harbor defenses for Pensacola, Florida, 1861; 2) three readings about the defense sites and important historical figures in the Pensacola area at the outbreak of the Civil War; 3) one photo and one diagram of Fort Pickens and its design; 4) one photo and one diagram of Fort Barrancas and its design. 3 Visiting the site Gulf Islands National Seashore, administered by the National Park Service, comprises several sites. Fort Pickens is located at the tip of Santa Rosa Island along Fort Pickens Road, west of Pensacola Beach, Florida. The park is open year-round, although operating hours vary seasonally. What do you think it was used for? 5 How to Use the Inquiry Question Begin each lesson by asking students to discuss possible answers to the inquiry question that accompanies the Getting Started image. To facilitate a whole class discussion, you may want to print the page and use it to make an overhead transparency. The purpose of the exercise is to engage students' interest in the lesson's topic by raising questions that can be answered as they complete the lesson. Rather than serving merely as illustrations for the text, images are documents that play an integral role in helping students achieve the lesson's objectives. To assist students in learning how to "read" visual materials, you may want to begin this section by having them complete the Photo Analysis Worksheet for one or more of the photos. The worksheet is appropriate for analyzing both historical and modern photographs and will help students develop a valuable skill. 6 Photo Analysis Worksheet Step 1: Examine the photograph for 10 seconds. How would you describe the photograph? Step 2: Divide the photograph into quadrants and study each section individually. What details--such as people, objects, activities--do you notice? Step 3: What other information--such as time period, location, season, reason photo was taken--can you gather from the photo? Step 4: How would you revise your first description of the photo using the information noted in Steps 2 and 3? Step 5: What questions do you have about the photograph? How might you find answers to these questions? 7 0 Setting the Stage Pensacola, Florida, is located on one of the best deep water harbors on the Gulf Coast. Large ships can pass through the entrance and enter the protected bay. The Spanish, French, English, and the Americans recognized that Pensacola Bay's entrance provided the key to the defense of Florida's panhandle. When Spain ceded Florida to the United States in 1819, the U.S. Navy selected Pensacola Bay as the site for a navy yard. Beginning in 1829, Americans built four forts in the area--Pickens (1829-34), McRee (1835-39), Barrancas (1839-44), and the Advanced Redoubt (1845-56)--to defend Pensacola and its navy yard from possible attacks by foreign powers.

This map is useful in planning the use and management of large areas. To find information about your area of interest, locate that area on the map, identify the name of the map unit in the area on the color-coded map legend, then refer to the section General Soil Map Units for a general description of the soils in your area. Detailed Soil Maps The detailed soil maps can be useful in planning the use and management of small areas. To find information about your area of interest, locate that area on the Index to Map Sheets. Note the number of the map sheet and turn to that sheet. Locate your area of interest on the map sheet. Note the map unit symbols that are in that area. Turn to the Contents, which lists the map units by symbol and name and shows the page where each map unit is described. The Contents shows which table has data on a specific land use for each detailed soil map unit. Also see the Contents for sections of this publication that may address your specific needs.

  • Biological Opinion for Johnson Beach Area Project
    Executive Summary We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), have evaluated the impacts of the proposed Gulf Islands National Seashore/Johnson Beach Area (GINS) parking lot improvement project to be developed on the east end of Perdido Key in Escambia County, Florida. GINS encompasses 1,041 acres with high visitor use, primarily beach and Gulf of Mexico access. Coastal dune habitat can be found adjacent to the open beach. It is this habitat that supports the federally endangered Perdido Key beach mouse (Peromyscus polionotus trissyllepsis) (PKBM). Gulf Islands National Seashore is one of three core population areas for PKBM. These core areas support the main population of PKBM and without them extinction would likely be near. GINS operates under a General Management Plan that supports management for PKBM and other protected species and their habitat. This parking lot expansion project aims to focus visitor use of the beaches to and through specific corridors to avoid critical and sensitive habitat. Currently the main parking lot holds 323 vehicles with additional roadside parking along both sides of the 1.2 mile paved park road. This road routinely gets covered in sand and requires regular maintenance to plow and remove. The focus of this expansion project is to remove the roadside parking, expand the main parking lot, and add three additional small parking lots along the park road. The entry way will also be expanded from a single entry and exit road to double entry/exit lanes. Removing and replacing dune walkovers, installing split rail fence and post and rope will direct pedestrian use from these parking areas to the open beach with limited disturbance to the habitat and species in the area.

There are snowy-white beaches, sparkling blue waters, fertile coastal marshes, and dense maritime forests. Visitors can explore 19th century forts, enjoy shaded picnic areas, hike on winding nature trails, and camp in comfortable campgrounds. In addition, Horn and Petit Bois islands located in Mississippi are federally designated wilderness areas. Nature, history, and recreational opportunities abound in this national treasure. All areas of Gulf Islands National Seashore in the Florida District and the Davis Bayou area in the Mississippi District are reachable from Interstate 10. The Mississippi District barrier islands are only accessible by boat. The purpose of and the need for taking action is to evaluate a range of alternatives and strategies for managing personal watercraft (PWC) use at Gulf Islands National Seashore to ensure the protection of park resources and values while offering recreational opportunities as provided for in the national seashore’s enabling legislation, purpose, mission, and goals. Upon completion of this process, in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the National Park Service (NPS) may either take action to adopt special regulations to manage PWC use, or it may not reinstate PWC use at this park unit.

    SANTA ROSA ISLAND—A HISTORY (Part 1) (Jane Johnson) While Santa Rosa Island may be thought of by some as a relaxing place to watch the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico and Santa Rosa Sound along with a plethora of birds, fish and other wildlife—not to leave out the beautiful heavens above—the Island has been em- broiled in historical upheavals from its very formation to current times. This History is not a scholarly work, but hopefully factual and interesting; it will appear in four or more installments in the Newsletter. The main sources for this history include Gulf Islands, The Sands of all Time by Jesse Earle Bowden (1994); www.uwf.edu/archaeology; Microsoft Encarta 97 Encyclopedia; the original lease of Navarre Beach by Santa Rosa County from Escambia County (1956); excerpts from the 1970 Annual Report of the Okaloosa Island Authority; Chapter 75-456 House Bill No. 2307 abolishing the Okaloosa Island Authority (1975); and the Okaloosa Island Leaseholders Association Newsletter of May 2000. The very formation of the 45 mile (some say 48 mile) long barrier island from Pensacola Bay to Destin’s East Pass must have been a sight to behold. Geologists believe that barrier is- lands in general began to form during the end of the last Ice Age about 15,000 years ago as gla- ciers melted and the sea level rose. It is believed that Santa Rosa Island was formed some 4000 to 5000 years ago by quartzite river sediment coming from the Appalachian Mountains via the Choctawhatchee River providing our beautiful white sand.

    Defending the Shoreline: From Cannon to Beach Nourishment in Gulf Islands National Seashore Alanna Casey Gulf Islands National Seashore was established in 1971 by the United States Congress, along the northern edge of the Gulf of Mexico. The park includes fringing barrier islands and some coastal spaces on the mainland of Florida and Mississippi. The national seashore encompasses over 40,000 hectares that include white sand beaches, uninhabited barrier islands, and the remnants of the Spanish, British, French, and American military fortifications, which provide much of the elevation in this low-lying sandy landscape.
