Gradually, under the influence of a range of factors, this dynamic shifted over time. Continued exploration, the spread of Enlightenment ideas, and changing material circumstances led to a decline in the belief in monsters—or at least put the belief in them beyond respectability, thereby enlarging the cultural gulf between various Indigenous cultures and European explorers and settlers, or at least the social elite of that latter group. In Canada, as argued here, the “sasquatch” was a hybrid creation combining Indigenous and European traditions; the windigo was an Indigenous monster tradition; the “grisly bear” was predominately a monster of the European imagination. Perceptions of each in European exploration literature followed a similar trajectory of increasing skepticism. Each evolved from creatures that were depicted as innately hostile or dangerous into somewhat more benign pop culture images as they lost their potency once the frontier receded and North America urbanized. As the gap in perspectives on monsters widened in exploration and frontier literature over the course of the nineteenth century, new narratives emerged that were much more negative in their depictions of Indigenous peoples. Frequently, this negativity, when connected with monster legends, depicted Indigenous peoples as cowardly or superstitious. With the sasquatch, European stereotypes about Indigenous people had by the 1870s partially supplanted what had once been a sense of genuine mystery regarding this frontier legend. The exploitation of windigo stories to portray Indigenous peoples as cowardly and superstitious also arose mainly after the 1870s, as earlier generations of explorers and fur traders had exhibited more receptive attitudes. Meanwhile many voyageurs and lower status trappers retained beliefs on monsters closer to their Indigenous counterparts, and as a result were often lumped into the same category as sharing premodern, superstitious beliefs by their social elites. Finally, in the third example, the “grisly bear” became a bloodthirsty monster in the European settler imagination. It was the last mainstream European monster myth, before it too largely faded away in the face of skeptical inquiry. However, such skepticism, voiced normally from afar, frequently misunderstood and misconstrued the nature of these legends, and the truths they had contained. iii Acknowledgments I must thank my supervisor, Dr. Ken Cruikshank, for his willingness to oversee this thesis and his indulgence of my interdisciplinary interests. Shoalts; McMaster University – Department of History Introduction When in 1792 the English explorer George Vancouver arrived on the mountainous coastline of North America’s Pacific Northwest, he wrote that his men were terrified of encountering “hideous monsters, in the wilderness.”1 The fears of Vancouver’s crew were not new. Strange beasts, fantastic animals, and monsters of various sorts have featured in exploration literature since at least the Greek traveller and historian Herodotus’ accounts in the fifth century BCE.2 Fabulous creatures became a staple of medieval travel narratives, such as Marco Polo’s, or the stories told about the Irish wanderer Saint Brendan. The earliest surviving North American exploration literature, the Vikings’ “Vinland Sagas,” also tell of monsters.3 Stories of fantastic creatures in the “New World” continued with Christopher Columbus’ first voyage across the Atlantic in 1492, as Columbus wrote of sighting mermaids.4 Columbus’ journeys initiated centuries of nearly continuous European and subsequent Euro-settler exploration of the Americas, which has left a large record of exploration literature containing many intriguing “monster” stories.5 1 George Vancouver, A Voyage of Discovery to the North Pacific Ocean, and Round the World; in which the Coast of North-West America has been carefully examined and accurately surveyed etc. Vol. I (London: Printed for G.G. and J. MacLaren Like men of every age, we see in Nature what we have been taught to look for, we feel what we have been prepared to feel. - MARJORIE NICOLSON1 A.LTHOUGH THE LITERARY MERIT of Samuel Hearne's A Journey . .. to the Northern Ocean ( 1795) has been recognized, and while the narrative has been deemed "one of the most sophisticated early journals and narratives," a search has not yet been undertaken for demonstrations of this sophistication in either the explorer's writing style or the ways in which his pen and pencil describe and depict the terrain through which he conducted his truly astonishing feats of exploration.2 Only six years after the publication of Hearne's Journey, Alexander Mackenzie published his Voyages. In his Preface, he recognized that, as a fur trader like Hearne, he was "better calculated to perform the voyages, arduous as they might be, than to write an account of them."3 Not a candidate for literary fame, he is anxious that his narratives manifest sufficient "charms of embellished narrative, or animated description" to suit the demands being made on travel literature by the British readers of his and Hearne's day. These demands issued, in large part, out of a taste for landscape tours which had developed during the course of the second half of the eighteenth century. A book publisher could not afford to bring out a book of travel which ignored the prevailing expectations of treatments of nature in terms of the Sublime and the Picturesque.

Plagiarism, hearsay information, and invented dialogues with Amerindians – such as those in Chrestien Le Clercq’s book Nouvelle Relation de la Gaspésie – are common features of these early accounts. Human History and Natural History had not yet been separated from one another and so all that was curious and strange in North America’s plants and animals was reported along with observations on the customs and costumes of the native peoples.

The Hudson’s Bay Territory, which included the entire drainage basin west to the Rocky Mountains, although one of the most thinly occupied areas in all of North America, was second only to South Carolina as the North American locality which contributed the most type specimens of birds. The collectors, fur traders ofthe Hudson’s Bay Company, were Alexander Light, James Isham, Thomas Hutchins, Humphrey Marten, Andrew Graham, and Samuel Heame. My researches in the Hudson’s Bay Company Archives and the Royal Society library have solved the long-standing confusion about the relative contributions of Andrew Graham and Thomas Hutchins to the Observationspublished in 1969 by the Hudson’s Bay Record Society. I have transcribed for publication the separate original “journals” of Graham and Hutchins and have compiled the largest dictionary of Cree Indian names of birds. Isham and Graham collected the most type specimens. Heame was the best naturalist. Hutchins, the medical doctor and best scientist, was the only one to have a taxon named for him. Severn Bridge, Ontario, POE 1NO, Canada (705)689-6431 SUMMARY Three properties: Jenny Leigh, Hay Island and Scotty Island were examined on Lake of the Woods. There are a large number of gold showings and current interest is generally the result of spillover from Nuinsco©s discovery of about l million tons, grading 0.20 oz/ton gold in the Cameron Lake area, about 50 km to southeast. A total of 40 man days were spent on geological mapping, sampling and report preparation on the three properties by Ulrich Kretschmar in August and September. There is a close similarity between the geology of the Jenny Leigh property and the adjacent Wendigo Mine where about 200,000 tons grading 0.33 oz/ton gold and 9.2X copper were produced during 1900-195}.. The value of this production would be about $30 million dollars at current metal prices. Major lithologies consist of mafic volcanics and interbedded differentiated ultramafic flows of probably komatiitic affinity. These are folded in a series of tight isoclinal drag folds on the Wendigo property and the mine horizon is repeated by a major east-west trending syncline on the Jenny-Leigh property. Mineralization on both the Jenny-Leigh property and at the Wendigo Mine occurs in gold-bearing conformable siliceous, locally graphitic interflow sediments.
