As an original piece of work it is engaged in research prob- lems, interests and unique ways of developing knowledge and insight. It also contributes to the development of a new emerging field of psychological re- search: the social psychology of everyday life. Research in the PhD program “Social Psychology of Everyday Life” investigates the everyday life of human subjects in their cultural and societal relations. The program builds on trans- disciplinary developments of theory, knowledge and methodology rooted in research problems of social life and connected to the everyday life of people. In this way the program is distinguished by a problem-orientated and transdis- ciplinary approach to social psychology in a broad sense. Tina Wilchen Christensen has written an exceptional Ph.D. dissertation about exit strategies for the disengagement of participants on the extremist right. The dissertation consists of an introduction and six articles. In the in- troduction we get a theoretical and methodological introduction to the work. The author is working within a neo-Vygotskian approach. We also find an his- torical overview over right-wing extremism, and an overview over programs in Scandinavia and Germany and programs targeting Islamic extremists in Singa- pore, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The articles are about the author's study of the social work with former extremists in "Fryshuset" in Stockholm, Sweden. Tina Wilchen Christensen has participated in the activities of the program, ob- served and interviewed social workers, coaches, who are former right wingers, and participants in the program. The first two articles are about methodologi- cal issues in the study, and the third article analyses how former neo-nazis to- gether with other staff at Fryshuset developed the EXIT program. The fourth article is about the mentor mentee relation as a deliberate practice. The fifth article is about how social interaction in the regi of "Fryshuset" leads the sub- ject to reinterpret himself and his world view. The last article demonstrates how the former right-wing extremists are in a continued process of self- transformation and social repositioning. The organization of the introduction, the papers, and the ensuing conclusion makes the dissertation appear as a co- herent dissertation. Tina Wilchen Christensen's work is one of a kind. Her work is based on a thorough insight into the right wing extremism. In the debate about exit pro- grams it gives arguments for close everyday work with right wingers who want 3 to exit their circles. The author's work stresses the importance of the right wingers' motivation for change, and demonstrates that by changing their eve- ryday activities participants change their life and the implicit political under- standings in it. It is also an important point, that the exit never stops but is a constant process of self-transformation and social re-positioning even after participation in the exit program. With her work, Tina Wilchen Christensen has contributed to knowledge necessary for disengagement programs for ex- tremists and gang members, and from many sides there has already been shown interest in her work. “Let us build an ark!” Jonas De Geer and the negotiation of religion within radical nationalism tomas lundström Field of study · religion in peace and conflict 30 credits ma thesis · spring 2016 Supervisor · mattias gardell Department of Theology · uppsala university abstract This thesis illuminates meaning(s) of religion in a Swedish radical nationalist context. The empirical study is based on a critical text analysis of author Jonas De Geer, key ideology producer of Swedish radical nationalism. The research questions concern how the publications of Jonas De Geer, during the period 1996-2016, address issues related to religion and Christian imagery. The primary aim of the thesis – to study how the concept of religion is understood, negotiated and used in a Swedish radical nationalist context – is enunciated through an examination of how identity and antagonists are construed through the notions of religion in the material, and how these concepts change over time. An applied text analysis, informed by critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics, constitutes the methodological framework of the study. The empirical analysis suggests that Christianity and national identity are construed as intertwined and natural, while Judaism is portrayed as the primary antagonist. Additionally, Islam and modernist ideals are depicted as weapons used by Jewish influence to dominate the West. Drawing on these empirical implications, the study concludes that religion functions as a racist configuration in De Geer's symbolic universe. Table of Contents

  • Lagom: Intersects of Nationalism and Populism in Swedish Parliamentary Elections
Lagom: Intersects of nationalism and populism in Swedish parliamentary elections Vernon Neil Ferguson Thesis submitted to the faculty of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Political Science Charles L. Thomas April 21, 2017 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: Sweden, nationalism, nativism, fascism, Sverigedemokraterna, elections, political theory, political parties, populism, Europe, lagom Lagom: Intersects of nationalism and populism in Swedish parliamentary elections Vernon Neil Ferguson ABSTRACT This thesis examines the unique set of circumstances which led to the rapid rise of a supposed right-wing populist party in Sweden. The Sverigedemokraterna (Sweden Democrats) are not the first nationalist party to enter the Swedish parliament, but are the first to survive multiple parliamentary elections and are currently the third largest party in parliament. This thesis argues the Sverigedemokraterna do not constitute a political party, but remain a populist movement within Swedish politics, are not right-wing but rather a lagom-inspired hybrid, and the stabilizing effects of the culture of lagom prevents the permanence of extremism in Swedish politics. The increase in immigrants from predominantly Muslim states due to the Arab Spring and the Syrian civil war stoke the anti-Islamic rhetoric of this nationalist group, but did not cause their rapid ascent and neither did the entry of Sweden into the European Economic Community. The Sverigedemokraterna are a single-point culmination of a century of nationalist and fascist groups splitting and merging within Sweden, but as other groups continue to appear the SD cannot be the only culmination.

  • Collaborating with the Radical Right: Scholar-Informant Solidarity and The
Current Anthropology Volume 60, Number 3, June 2019 000 FORUM ON PUBLIC ANTHROPOLOGY Collaborating with the Radical Right Scholar-Informant Solidarity and the Case for an Immoral Anthropology by Benjamin R. Teitelbaum This article investigates the moral content and epistemological utility of scholar-informant solidarity in ethnography. It supports efforts to highlight the potential for immoral outcomes when ethnographers prioritize the interests of those they study during the conception, execution, and dissemination of their work. However, this article advocates reinforcing the imperative of scholar-informant solidarity, recognizing the practice as morally compromised but epistemologically indispensable. I illustrate these claims by referencing my experiences as an ethnographer of white nationalist groups in the Nordic countries. In three case studies, I show how solidarity—and with it collaboration, reciprocity, and advocacy—led to troubling contributions to political causes while offering ethnographic knowledge unlikely to be gained through other forms of research. The article argues further that, while the moral and epistemic consequences of solidarity are exposed in the study of oppressive and violent groups, the potential for power asymmetries and political conflict among scholars and informants is ubiquitous. Therefore, the article addresses the need to embrace solidarity and the immorality that comes with it to ethnographers at large. • Criminal Organizing Applying the Theory of Partial Organization to Four Cases of Organized Crime
Trends Organ Crim DOI 10.1007/s12117-017-9315-6 Criminal organizing applying the theory of partial organization to four cases of organized crime Amir Rostami1 & Hernan Mondani1 & Fredrik Liljeros2 & Christofer Edling3 # The Author(s) 2017. This article is an open access publication Abstract We explore how the idea of partial organization can provide insights in the study of organized crime. Studying criminal organizing with a theoretical framework used for other social organizing phenomena can help us see the interplay between different forms of criminal collaboration under a single analytical lens, and start a discussion on whether criminal organizing is intrinsically different from other types of social organizing. We analyze four cases of criminal collaboration in Sweden between 1990 and 2015: the Syriac mafia, the Hells Angels Mc Sweden, the street gang Werewolf Legion, and the Hallunda robbery. While the outlaw motorcycle gang, and to a certain extent the street gang, are complete organizations, the mafia is based around and heavily parasitic on other institutions. We have also shown that time-bounded projects are found in the criminal context, with these emerging from strong network relations. Our results show that most of the elements of criminal organizing are not formalized and that partial organization is at least as important and powerful as complete organization. * Amir Rostami [email protected] Hernan Mondani [email protected] Fredrik Liljeros [email protected] Christofer Edling [email protected] 1 Institute for Futures Studies and Department of Sociology, Stockholm University, Stockholm, Sweden 2 Department of Sociology, Stockholm University, Stockholm, Sweden 3 Institute for Futures Studies and Department of Sociology, Lund University, Lund, Sweden Trends Organ Crim Keywords Organizing .
