World Heritage Scanned Nomination File Name: 1149.pdf UNESCO Region: EUROPE AND NORTH AMERICA __________________________________________________________________________________________________ SITE NAME: Ilulissat Icefjord DATE OF INSCRIPTION: 7th July 2004 STATE PARTY: DENMARK CRITERIA: N (i) (iii) DECISION OF THE WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE: Excerpt from the Report of the 28th Session of the World Heritage Committee Criterion (i): The Ilulissat Icefjord is an outstanding example of a stage in the Earth’s history: the last ice age of the Quaternary Period. The ice-stream is one of the fastest (19m per day) and most active in the world. Its annual calving of over 35 cu. km of ice accounts for 10% of the production of all Greenland calf ice, more than any other glacier outside Antarctica. The glacier has been the object of scientific attention for 250 years and, along with its relative ease of accessibility, has significantly added to the understanding of ice-cap glaciology, climate change and related geomorphic processes. Criterion (iii): The combination of a huge ice sheet and a fast moving glacial ice-stream calving into a fjord covered by icebergs is a phenomenon only seen in Greenland and Antarctica. Ilulissat offers both scientists and visitors easy access for close view of the calving glacier front as it cascades down from the ice sheet and into the ice-choked fjord. The wild and highly scenic combination of rock, ice and sea, along with the dramatic sounds produced by the moving ice, combine to present a memorable natural spectacle. BRIEF DESCRIPTIONS Located on the west coast of Greenland, 250-km north of the Arctic Circle, Greenland’s Ilulissat Icefjord (40,240-ha) is the sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the few glaciers through which the Greenland ice cap reaches the sea.

PINNGORTITALERIFFIK GREENLAND INSTITUTE OF NATURAL RESOURCES GRØNLANDS NATURINSTITUT Nuuk August 2016 Assessment of lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) in West Greenland based on commercial data 2010-2016 Rasmus Hedeholm and Søren Post Greenland Institute of Natural Resources Introduction The lumpfish fishery in Greenland is conducted in the spring from April 1st to June 30th along the Greenland west coast. The fishery peaks in late May/early June. Prior to year 2000, reported roe landings were below 500 t, but in the last decade landings have steadily increased, reaching the highest level in 2013 with 2 124 t (Fig. 1). Before 2015 the fishery was unregulated, but in 2015 a management plan was implemented, that operates with TAC and restricted number of fishing days. The West Coast is divided into six management areas, with the onset of the fishery being area dependent due to a timely displaced onset of spawning. The fishery is conducted from small open boats (<6.5m) that operates with gill nets that typically fish for 24 hours. Due to the large mesh size (260mm) the nets are highly selective, and catch predominantly female lumpfish, which are much larger than males (Hedeholm et al. 2013). Upon capture, the roe is removed from the fish, and stored in large barrels before landed at land based facilities. Hence, the number of fish landed is not reported, but only the total amount of roe. Due to the size of the fishing vessels, there is an upper limit to the number of nets each boat can carry. All calculations in this assessment rest on this vital assump- tion; that each fisherman is assumed to be incapable of increasing fishing effort (nets) as a response to a decline in lumpfish abundance to maintain the same landings.

  • Renewable Energy Across the Arctic: Greenland Report
Renewable energy across the Arctic: Greenland Report EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Greenland has been partly self-supplying with energy since 1993 by help of hydropower plants. The national energy production is increasing, but Greenland still depends on imported oil, primarily gas oil, diesel and petrol. Greenland has firm green ambitions – and potentials – in the energy sector. The Government of Greenland is committed to developing new hydropower plants in five communities and to invest in renewable energy for small, isolated settlements (Government of Greenland, coalition agreement 2016-2018). By pairing large-scale industry with renewable energy, Greenland can take a lead position in sustainable business. A central driver for the Government of Greenland’s commitment to renewable energy is an urge for a self-sustained economy and financial independence from subsidies from Denmark. When replacing imported fossil fuels with national energy production, the Government of Greenland supports the national economy while reducing CO2-emissions. Many communities in Greenland are small, and the grid comprises today 69 decentralized, stand-alone energy systems with no option for the distribution of renewable energy. However, two cities – Qaqortoq and Narsaq - are connected to the same hydro power plant in Qorlortorsuaq. Size matters in Greenland, as the country has an area greater than Mexico and with some communities very remote. The potential for hydropower is far from exhausted. New plants are already further analyzed, developed and in pipeline for five communities: Aasiaat, Qasigiannguit, Maniitsoq, Paamiut and Nanortalik. With more hydropower on the local grids, electric and hybrid cars can replace the use of gasoline and diesel. First- movers have already been out for some years, and more power stations are key to leverage.

  • The History of Qasigiannguit
    - The Arctic Region of Disko - The History of Qasigiannguit by Peter Chapman Mountain Environment Early Colonisation of Disko The Arctic Region of Disko he history of Qasigiannguit probably begins around the time that the first ever settlers arrived in Disko Bay. Saqqaq settlements have been found close to Qasigiannguit that date from 2400 BC and it is known that the later T Greenlandic Dorset and Thule cultures also populated the Disko region. These peoples must have trodden the shores where Qasigiannguit is located, thus seeing the locations’ potential as later colonisers did. The Greenlandic or Inuit people of today are direct descendants of the Thule people who arrived in the region around 1100 AD. It was also around this time that Norse travellers from their settlements on the southwest coast travelled northwards and traded with the Thule people of Disko. The Norse settlers however, soon disappeared from Greenland and it was not until after the 15th century (when cartographers began thinking of the earth as a globe and were trying to draw in an unknown arctic region) that new interest in the Arctic was gained among Europeans. In search of the Northwest Passage, the English explorer John Davis commanded three expeditions to the Davis Strait and Baffin Bay areas. On these journeys he interacted notably with the local Inuit population, particularly at a settlement later to become Godthaab (today the capital Nuuk). In 1587, Davis sailed up along the west coast of Greenland to Sanderson’s Hope near Upernavik at 72o46’N, having passed Disko Island. Davis was a sterling mariner and provided unprecedented data from his voyages - charts of over 1000km of previously uncharted coastline, notes on ice and sea conditions, flora and fauna, of Greenland’s interior near Godthaab and ethnographic descriptions of the Inuit he met.
