Species Composition and Invasion Risks of Alien Ornamental Freshwater
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Species composition and invasion risks of alien ornamental freshwater fshes from pet stores in Klang Valley, Malaysia Abdulwakil Olawale Saba1,2, Ahmad Ismail1, Syaizwan Zahmir Zulkifi1, Muhammad Rasul Abdullah Halim3, Noor Azrizal Abdul Wahid4 & Mohammad Noor Azmai Amal1* The ornamental fsh trade has been considered as one of the most important routes of invasive alien fsh introduction into native freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, the species composition and invasion risks of fsh species from 60 freshwater fsh pet stores in Klang Valley, Malaysia were studied. A checklist of taxa belonging to 18 orders, 53 families, and 251 species of alien fshes was documented. Fish Invasiveness Screening Test (FIST) showed that seven (30.43%), eight (34.78%) and eight (34.78%) species were considered to be high, medium and low invasion risks, respectively. After the calibration of the Fish Invasiveness Screening Kit (FISK) v2 using the Receiver Operating Characteristics, a threshold value of 17 for distinguishing between invasive and non-invasive fshes was identifed. As a result, nine species (39.13%) were of high invasion risk. In this study, we found that non-native fshes dominated (85.66%) the freshwater ornamental trade in Klang Valley, while FISK is a more robust tool in assessing the risk of invasion, and for the most part, its outcome was commensurate with FIST. This study, for the frst time, revealed the number of high-risk ornamental fsh species that give an awareness of possible future invasion if unmonitored in Klang Valley, Malaysia. As a global hobby, fshkeeping is cherished by both young and old people. -

Sequences of mitochondrial DNA ATPase 8 and 6 genes, and morphometric data, were used to find population structuring. Specimens were collected from 7 locations in the southern region of Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot in India. Biometric analysis revealed apparent heterogeneity in the morphology and color pattern between the species at juvenile and adult stages, and among different geographically separated populations of these species. High values for mean pair wise distances and a high proportion of the total variance attributed to differences between the geographically isolated populations with AMOVA, indicated clear population structuring within these species. Extremely high values for Pair wise FST and significantly lower Nm values observed among the populations studied, suggested little or no effective gene flow among them. Constructed phylogenies further confirmed a high degree of population structuring within the species, showing local endemism with population specific haplotypes forming a species complex. -

Sahyadria denisonii: Report addressing the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment terms of reference for proposed amendments to the List of Specimens taken to be Suitable for Live Import (Live Import List) Submitted by the Aquarium Industry Association of Australia 16 December 2020 1 Summary Consideration of the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment (DAWE) terms of reference for proposed amendments to the List of Specimens taken to be Suitable for Live Import (Live Import List) against information available for the Torpedo barb (Sahyadria denisonii) indicates the risk of allowing the importation of the species would pose minimal biosecurity risk to Australia. Notably, S. denisonii is not reported to have established breeding populations outside its natural range overseas despite being traded internationally for over 30 years and similar species such as Dawkinsia filamentosa have not established self-maintaining wild populations in Australia despite decades of importation. Captive breeding populations of S. denisonii currently exist in the Australian hobby supplying a limited domestic trade ─ these populations have not led to the establishment of feral populations in Australia. S. denisonii would be a welcome addition to the species permitted live importation, especially given the growing popularity of the hobby in Australia and the significant economic and social benefits of the aquarium fish trade to Australia. Furthermore, the addition of S. denisonii would be a common-sense decision given that the species is present in Australia and given that it is closely related to and shares a similar environmental risk profile with other species currently permitted live importation to Australia. Considering the number of species maximum 83 (55.70%) was found under the order Perciformes followed by Cypriniformes 24 (16.10%), Characiformes 18 (12.08%), Siluriformes 11 (7.38%), Osteoglossiformes 05 (3.35%), Atheriniformes 03 (2.01%), Lepisosteiformes 02 (1.34%), Polypteriformes 01 (0.6%), Myliobatiformes 01 (0.67%) and Cyprinodontiformes 01 (0.67%). The top five popular species were guppy (13.16%) followed by goldfish (12.39%), molly (8.54%), angelfish (6.23%), platy (5.93%). The number of fish species' increasing tendency was 5.96 times in the last 15 years, and 3.31 times in the last ten years. -
