We studied the freshwater fish fauna of Rivers of Southern Western Ghats for a period of three years 14 from 2010 to 2013. We recorded 64 species belonging to 6 orders, 14 families and 31 genera. Alteration in the 15 micro and macro habitats in the system severely affects the aquatic life especially fishes and also complicates the 16 fish taxonomy. In the present study a total of 31 sites of six river systems of Southern Western Ghats were studied 17 in which a total of 64 species belonging to 6 orders, 14 families and 31 genera were recorded. Among the 64 18 species Cyprinidae was the dominant family with 3 families 18 genus and 49 species (76.6%) compared to other 19 order and families, further the data analyses suggested that species belonging to the order Cypriniformes were 20 found to be the dominant species in the locations considered in the present survey. Interestingly, among the 31 21 sites Thunakadavu stream, Gulithuraipatti, Athirappalli, Naduthotam, Nadathittu, Mullaithodu, Thonanthikla, 22 Noolpuzha and Sinnaru exhibited high variations in species abundance and as well species richness. Fifteen out 23 of the 64 fish species endangered to the Western Ghats. -

Species Composition and Invasion Risks of Alien Ornamental Freshwater
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Species composition and invasion risks of alien ornamental freshwater fshes from pet stores in Klang Valley, Malaysia Abdulwakil Olawale Saba1,2, Ahmad Ismail1, Syaizwan Zahmir Zulkifi1, Muhammad Rasul Abdullah Halim3, Noor Azrizal Abdul Wahid4 & Mohammad Noor Azmai Amal1* The ornamental fsh trade has been considered as one of the most important routes of invasive alien fsh introduction into native freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, the species composition and invasion risks of fsh species from 60 freshwater fsh pet stores in Klang Valley, Malaysia were studied. A checklist of taxa belonging to 18 orders, 53 families, and 251 species of alien fshes was documented. Fish Invasiveness Screening Test (FIST) showed that seven (30.43%), eight (34.78%) and eight (34.78%) species were considered to be high, medium and low invasion risks, respectively. After the calibration of the Fish Invasiveness Screening Kit (FISK) v2 using the Receiver Operating Characteristics, a threshold value of 17 for distinguishing between invasive and non-invasive fshes was identifed. As a result, nine species (39.13%) were of high invasion risk. In this study, we found that non-native fshes dominated (85.66%) the freshwater ornamental trade in Klang Valley, while FISK is a more robust tool in assessing the risk of invasion, and for the most part, its outcome was commensurate with FIST. This study, for the frst time, revealed the number of high-risk ornamental fsh species that give an awareness of possible future invasion if unmonitored in Klang Valley, Malaysia. As a global hobby, fshkeeping is cherished by both young and old people. -

In the exposed fishes, chronic inflammatory cell infiltration (lymphocyte) along with ulceration of mucosa and vacuolation was observed. Higher doses had severe effects. Introduction Malathion (diethyl [(dimethoxy phosphino thioyl] butanediotae) is an organophosphate pesticide commonly applied for public health (De Guise et al., 2004) and control of agricultural pests (EPA, 2000). Malathion is highly toxic to fish (Mohan, 2000) due to the lack of hydrolytic enzymes in fish (Arecchon and Plumb, 1990). Malathion appears to inhibit AChE activity (Savolainen, 2001). In North Eastern India, Indian flying barb, Esomus danricus (Hamilton-Buchanan), a teleost fish, mostly inhabits water bodies near agricultural fields. Malathion, as well as other pesticides, used in agriculture find their way with runoff water interfering with all the metabolic processes and get accumulated in vital organs thereby affecting the functional activity of both exocrine and endocrine systems of non-target aquatic organisms including fish (Sahai, 1987). Malathion is also commonly found at low concentrations in rivers, streams and drinking water (Hoffman et al., 2000; Larson et al., 1999), thus affecting fish as well as mammals. -

The first PCA (climatic change) responsible for the reduced fish species diversity explained 24.05% of the variance and consisted of erratic rainfall (positive correlation coefficient 0.680), heavy rainfall (À0.544), temperature fluctu- ation (0.561), and beel siltation (0.503). The second PCA was anthropogenic activity, including the use of harmful fishing gear (0.702), application of urea to harvest fish (0.673), drying beels annually (0.531), and overfishing (0.513). -
