G.J B.A.H.S., Vol.2 (2) 2013:90-93 ISSN: 2319 – 5584 HISTOPATHOLOGICAL CHANGES IN THE INTESTINE OF INDIAN FLYING BARB (ESOMUS DANRICUS) EXPOSED TO ORGANOPHOSPHATE PESTICIDE, MALATHION (EC 50) Suchismita Das1 & Abhik Gupta2 1Department of Life science and Bioinformatics, Assam University, Silchar, India 2Department of Ecology and Environmental Science, Assam University, Silchar, India Abstract Indian flying barb (Esomus danricus) was exposed to three sublethal concentrations of malathion (EC 50) for 28 days and intestinal histopathology was observed by light microscopy after staining with Haematoxylin-Eosine. In the exposed fishes, chronic inflammatory cell infiltration (lymphocyte) along with ulceration of mucosa and vacuolation was observed. Higher doses had severe effects. Introduction Malathion (diethyl [(dimethoxy phosphino thioyl] butanediotae) is an organophosphate pesticide commonly applied for public health (De Guise et al., 2004) and control of agricultural pests (EPA, 2000). Malathion is highly toxic to fish (Mohan, 2000) due to the lack of hydrolytic enzymes in fish (Arecchon and Plumb, 1990). Malathion appears to inhibit AChE activity (Savolainen, 2001). In North Eastern India, Indian flying barb, Esomus danricus (Hamilton-Buchanan), a teleost fish, mostly inhabits water bodies near agricultural fields. Malathion, as well as other pesticides, used in agriculture find their way with runoff water interfering with all the metabolic processes and get accumulated in vital organs thereby affecting the functional activity of both exocrine and endocrine systems of non-target aquatic organisms including fish (Sahai, 1987). Malathion is also commonly found at low concentrations in rivers, streams and drinking water (Hoffman et al., 2000; Larson et al., 1999), thus affecting fish as well as mammals. -

Fish species diversity data were collected from fishers using Fish species diversity participatory rural appraisal tools and the change in the fish species diversity was determined using Shannon- Fishers Wiener, Margalef's Richness and Pielou's Evenness indices. Principal component analysis (PCA) was conducted Principal component analysis with a dataset of 150 fishers survey to characterize the major factors responsible for the reduction of fish species Climate change fi Anthropogenic activity diversity. Out of 63 sh species, 83% of them were under the available category in 2008 which decreased to 51% in 2018. Fish species diversity indices for all 12 taxonomic orders in 2008 declined remarkably in 2018. The first PCA (climatic change) responsible for the reduced fish species diversity explained 24.05% of the variance and consisted of erratic rainfall (positive correlation coefficient 0.680), heavy rainfall (À0.544), temperature fluctu- ation (0.561), and beel siltation (0.503). The second PCA was anthropogenic activity, including the use of harmful fishing gear (0.702), application of urea to harvest fish (0.673), drying beels annually (0.531), and overfishing (0.513). -

The understanding of the biochemical aspects of stress related responses in fishes to reduce the detrimental effects caused by those environmental challenges comes into need. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) were studied after 10 days of exposure to three concentrations of copper. The hepatocytes showed pathological changes ranging from mild inflammatory infiltration, swelling and vacuolation to nuclear picnosis and necrosis. Higher dose had more severe effect on liver. Water pollution is now considered to be one of the most dangerous hazards affecting both developing and developed countries. The large scale dumping of hazardous substances in the water bodies have taken its toll of aquatic fauna. The present work is an attempt to review the existing literature on significant works being done on the effects of various anthropogenic activities on fish. In this review, the anthropogenic activities were classified as heavy metal/metalloid, oils and hydrocarbon, pesticides, combination of substances as industrial discharges and municipal or sewage discharges and discussed with emphasis on their effects in fish.
