Attempts to improve the conservation status of Sri Lanka's coral reefs and their associated fauna have failed because they omit to address the social circumstances of local people. -

Thiruvananthapuram- 695 521 ABSTRACT Cu lture technologies on marine ornamentals available at present are mainly confined to anemone fishes, damsel fishes (Pomacentridae), gobies (Gobiidae), cardinal fish (Apogonidae), sea horses (Sygnathidae), angelfishes (Pomacanthidae) and dotty backs (pseudochromidae). The major constraints that limit the expansion of marine ornamental fish aquaculture are (i) control of patterns of sex reversal, broodstock development and spawning, (ii) identification of appropriate live feed items and their mass culture for larval feeding, and (iii) suitable larval rearing systems with emphasis on water quality parameters. With the current status oftechnology available, costs of culture, limitations with first feeds and limited number of species, it is not possible for tank-reared fish to complete with wild caught ornamental fish. Hence more concerted, multidisciplinary research efforts which can lead to advancements in methods of controlling maturation, spawning and larval feeding are required to evolve cost-effective commercial level hatchery production technologies for different species. -
The Importance of the Marine Ornamental Reef Fish Trade in the Wider Caribbean
The importance of the marine ornamental reef fish trade in the wider Caribbean A.W. Abstract: The marine ornamental fish trade began in the 1930s in Sri Lanka, spread to Hawaii and the Philippines in the 1950s, and expanded to a multi-million dollar industry in the 1970s with fisheries established throughout the tropical Pacific, Indian and Atlantic Oceans. Currently, 45 countries supply global markets an estimated 14-30 million fish annually, with an import value of US$28-44 million. The largest suppliers are Indonesia and the Philippines, followed by Brazil, Maldives, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Hawaii. In the tropical Western Atlantic, 16 countries have export fisheries, including the U.S. (Florida and Puerto Rico). The U.S. is the world’s largest buyer, followed by the European Union and Japan. The global trade consists of over 1400 species of reef fishes, of which only about 25 are captive bred on a commercial scale. Damselfish, anemonefish, and angelfish constitute over 50% of the global volume; butterflyfish, wrasses, blennies, gobies, triggerfish, file- fish, hawkfishes, groupers and basselets account for 31% of the trade, and the remaining 16% is represented by 33 families. The most important fishes from the Caribbean are angelfish (six species), seahorses (two species), royal gramma, jawfish, queen triggerfish, redlip blenny, puddingwife, bluehead wrasse, and blue chromis. The Caribbean currently supplies a small percentage of the global trade in marine ornamental species, but ornamental fisheries in this region represent important emerging industries. -

Fisheries Bottomfish Fisheries Council staff will be reporting on the August 28, 2017 meeting with the Governor regarding the joint management of Bottomfish in the Main Hawaiian Islands. Resource Protection Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) No report Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument There were 11 permits issued between June - September 2017. Breakdown by permit type is: 5- Research, 3-Conservation and Management, 2-Native Hawaiian Practices, and 1-Education MLCDs MLCDs and control sites are surveyed for fish and coral cover. Routinely the fish surveys are conducted two to three times a year. During this period, six of the 11 MLCDs were surveyed for fish. Benthic surveys were also conducted on Maui and Hawaii islands. Size Limits/Bag Limits No report Artificial Reefs A meeting was held during this reporting period with the Chairperson of DLNR, DAR administrator, DAR biologists, UH artificial reefs researcher, and NOAA EFH administrator on the general benefits of artificial reefs and the conditions under which such reefs can be expected to provide benefits. Following the meeting, the Chair signed the transmittal letter and the application for a 404 permit to the Army Corps of Engineers. The application included a commitment from the State to conduct further studies on the benefits of the proposed project. The Chair also signed a letter asking the Department of Health to extend the 401 Water Quality Certification that is needed before the Corps will issue a 404 permit. The permit application is currently be reviewed by the Corps.
