Consistent with their morpho- logical differences, the mean genetic distance between the two forms of I. typhlops was significantly higher than generally reported for intraspecific divergence in freshwater fishes. Fisheries Faculty, Sylhet fish the endemicity also higher here. Over 300 freshwater fishes present in the Western Ghats and more Agricultural University, Sylhet, than 50% of those are endemic. Very few places in the earth having extraordinary biodiversity and the Bangladesh intensity of endemism in respect of freshwater fishes as Western Ghats, India showed. Eighteen genera are endemic in Western Ghats regions. Some fishes having cryptic nature with their congeneric sister Nagappa Basavaraja species. Proper identification, conservation and incorporating the cultivable endemic species for College of Fisheries, Mangaluru, development of aquaculture is now demand of time. Tapkir1,4 Abstract Background: The Western Ghats of India, one of the global biodiversity hotspots and freshwater eco-regions, harbors several fish species which not just form the important part of the world’s freshwater biodiversity yet in addition are the vital segment of livelihood of the neighborhood population. The rate of fish decline in the Western Ghats is alarming. The absence of organized study and data scarcity on basic biology and life history traits of several species could be one reason behind the decline, and thus it is difficult to execute conservation action/s. This is especially true, particularly for data-deficient species for which definite data related to distribution, population size, and trend is not available. The present study deals with the detailed investigation of population dynamics of catfish species, Pachypterus khavalchor, which is data-deficient species inhabiting the Western Ghats of India and forms an important component of freshwater inland fishery, providing nutritional and financial security to the local community. Methods: Specimens for the present study were collected monthly for a period of 1 year from the River Panchaganga and length–frequency data were analyzed using FiSAT II software. Results: Length–weight analysis of pooled (male + female) data suggested the fish exhibited higher exponent than expected under isometry, indicating the positive allometric growth of P. -

We have been extracting energy, materials and organisms from nature and altering landscapes at a rate that cannot be a sustainable one. Our nature is an essential partnership; an 'essential', because each living species has its space and role', and performs an activity vital to the whole; a 'partnership', because the biological species or the living components of nature can only thrive together, because together they create a dynamic equilibrium. Nature is further a dynamic entity that never remains the same- that changes, that adjusts, that evolves; 'equilibrium', that is in spirit, balanced and harmonious. Nature, in fact, promotes evolution, radiation and diversity. The current biodiversity is an inherited vital resource to us, which needs to be carefully conserved for our future generations as it holds the key to the progress in agriculture, aquaculture, clothing, food, medicine and numerous other fields. -

Editorial This is the third and final issue in the series of Buceros that serve as indices of wetland related papers (except avifauna) of the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society, now in its ninety- seventh volume. Two other earlier issues of Buceros, i.e., Vol. 3, No. 3 and Vol. 5, No. 1, had covered Volumes 1 to 40 and 41 to 70 respectively. This issue deals with Volumes 71 to 95. ENVIS ENVIS (Environmental Information System) is a network of subject specific nodes located in various institutions throughout the country. The Focal Point of the present 25 ENVIS centres in India is at the Ministry of Environment and Forests, New Delhi, which further serves as the Regional Service Centre (RCS) for INFOTERRA, the global information network of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to cater to environment information needs in the South Asian sub-region. The primary objective of all ENVIS centres is to collect, collate, store and disseminate environment related information to various user groups, including researchers, policy planners and decision makers.
