I II Abstract In the 2010 U.S. Supreme Court decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, the Court held that political speech of corporations is entitled to the same rights as political speech by individuals. They ruled that restrictions on independent expenditures by corporations and labor unions are unconstitutional on Frist Amendment grounds. In this thesis I test two hypotheses. First that outside spending in the 2012 Presidential election was abnormally high because of Citizens United and second, that the increase in outside spending benefited the Republican Party in the 2012 Ohio House elections. I find that Citizens United is the reason for the increase in spending by outside groups, and that this benefited the Republican Part in the 2012 Ohio House elections. Stimson) Much research has focused on what challengers do to win an election. Little research has been dedicated to exploring the behavior of candidates who are expected to win their elections. Candidates who find themselves in close races are likely to act differently than candidates in landslide elections because, as Kahn and Kenney (1997) suggest, voters eval- uate candidates differently based on the intensity of the election. What things do candidates who are expected to easily win their elections discuss? By content analyzing websites of candidates for the U.S. House, Senate, and state gov- ernorships from 2008, I find that candidates who are expected to win their elections are likely to act in ways that will not draw attention to the election. They are less likely to discuss controversial issues or mention their opponents than candidates in close races or those expected to lose. Alternatively, they focus on valence issues and constituent service. The same is true for their advertisements. Expected winners air fewer ads than candidates in competitive elections and the ones they do air tend to have less controversial content.

    Volume 19, No.10“And Ye Shall Know The Truth...” December 29, 2010 Page 2 The Sojourner’s Truth December 29, 2010 This Strikes Us … A Sojourner’s Truth Editorial For historians, the year 2010 may well prove to be the defining period of the Obama presidency – be it four years or eight. As a result of the sluggish economy, along with other problems such as the Gulf oil spill, President Obama and the Democratic Party took a huge hit during the mid-term elections, losing five seats in the Senate and more than 60 seats in the House. They also lost control of the lower chamber. However, in spite of that November debacle and the still pathetic year-end employment numbers, 2010, in the long run, may well be remembered as the year in which the Obama presidency left an indelible mark on the direction this country takes for the next several decades. The president’s successes began early in the year with the passage of the health care bill and the financial reform package. One cannot overstate the difficulty that the White House faced in getting the health care bill passed given the long history of health care reform failure (75 years), the lack of solidarity within the Democratic Party’s own ranks and the loss of the Massachusetts Senate seat long held by universal health care advocate Ted Kennedy. Even now Republicans are challenging the bill in the courts and threatening repeal since they will have a majority in the House come the new year. And while their chances of repeal are virtually non-existent, there are some opportunities in the courts in light of the conservative majority that sits on the U.S.
