Russell Joseph Marr was born on March 22, 1921 in New Madrid, Missouri to John and Mary Marr. As a child Russell attended Obannon Schools and as a young man he courageously volunteered for the United States Army Corp. during World Word II. He moved to Toledo making Ohio his home and in September 29, 1947 he married Ruth Esther Hamilton. At a young age Russell accepted Christ as his personal savior. He has been a member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 50 years; where he was a devoted member of the usher board for over 40 year. Toledo’s annual Holiday Parade will march the streets of downtown again this season, thanks to a partnership involving The Blade, Taylor Automotive Group, and other prospective sponsors. Marching bands, clowns, equestrian units, dance troupes and more will step off at Summit and Jefferson Streets at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 27, traveling north on Summit to Jackson and finishing on Huron. Along the way, children and adults will enjoy a festive array of multi-storied helium balloons, fun floats, high jinx by the Shriners and Distinguished Clown Corp and, of course, the parade’s biggest star: Santa! Local marching bands, including the University Toledo, will provide the holiday music. Singer, dancer and actress Alyson Stoner will serve as Grand Marshal. Known by her fans as a star of Disney Channel’s Camp Rock movie, 17-year old Alyson Stoner is a multi-talented artist who has performed as the voice of “Isabella” in Disney’s award-winning animated series Phineas and Ferb, and as the infamous pig- tailed dancer in the Missy Elliott music videos. This summer, she starred in the first-ever 3-D dance movie - Step Up 3D - in which she reprised her role of Camille Gage. Also this year, Alyson appeared in Disney Channel’s Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam and The Little Engine That Could. Stoner’s many additional credits include a recent episode of House, Cheaper By The Dozen 1 & 2, The Alyson Stoner Project, Kung Fu Magoo, The Suite Life of Zach & Cody and Alice in Alice Upside Down. She recently released her first two singles, Flying Forward and Make History. At the conclusion of her duties as Grand Marshal, Alyson Stoner will perform live at the Erie Street Market as part of the day’s second family-themed event, Kris Kringle Village. Now in its second season, Kris Kringle Village offers a selection of activities, including magic shows, demonstrations by the , photo opportunities with Santa, gingerbread house building for children, a coloring contest, cookie decorating, a bounce house, and carriage rides. Thirty-five gingerbread houses will be on display, featuring a 6-foot tall house constructed by the culinary students of Penta Career Center. While there, visitors can vote for their favorite. Kris Kringle Village is open from noon to 6:00 pm at the Erie Street Market. Admission is $6. Infants one year old and under are admitted free. Food and beverages are available for purchase. Interested parties wishing to sponsor bands and units in the parade, or who wish to participate as sponsors for Kris Kringle Village, should contact Mark Peddicord at The Blade at 419-724-6394.
