580-St. Cecilia Page 6 June 23, 2019 The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

My dear parishioners, Today we celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ commonly called CORPUS CHRISTI (Latin for “Body of Christ”). The mystery of the Holy Eucharist is at the core of the Scriptural texts which are proclaimed on this, the Lord’s Day, for our reflection. Each Sunday the Church gathers to commemorate the Lord Jesus’ Holy Resurrection with the celebration of the Eucharist. This has been the practice of the Church from its origins as is testified in Acts of the Apostles. In today’s second reading from the First Letter of Saint to the Corinthians we have the earliest record of what the Lord Jesus did at the Last Supper and His command to the Apostles to do this “in remembrance of Me.” Paul’s account predates that which is recorded in the very first Gospel, that of Mark, which was written in about the year 65. The story of the multiplication of bread and fish, the focus of today’s Gospel, is the only event that is recorded in all four Gospels. This gives us an indication of how important an event this is, the foreshadowing of the Holy Eucharist which is the very center of the Church’s life and worship. The first reading from the Old Testament is significant in that we are once again acquainted with the mysterious priest-king, . It is he who offers BREAD AND WINE as stands before him. The priest, bread and wine, an offering -all of this is significant in our understanding of the Eucharist whose foundations reach back to the very beginning of the Sa- cred Scriptures. Today we worship the Lord Jesus who is hidden in the elements of bread and wine which are consecrated by the priest at Holy Mass through the coming down of the Holy Spirit. The faith of the Church from the beginning is that the Lord Jesus is present body, soul and divinity within the sacred species. When we receive Holy Communion at Mass we receive the “Bread of angels” and drink from the “Cup of salvation.” This is the food for eternal life, it is the Lord Himself! Parents have the spe- cial duty to instruct their children in the proper manner in which they should receive Holy Communion and model for them the reverence which is due the Most Blessed Sacrament such as genuflecting upon entering and exiting the church in recogni- tion of the Lord’s presence in the tabernacle. Since the Middle Ages this has been that day when Catholics conduct an outdoor procession with the Most Blessed Sacrament as a public demonstration of their faith in the Lord Jesus present in the Holy Eucharist. I pray that many of you will partici- pate in the Corpus Christi celebration at Sacred Heart Church this afternoon, a joint Sacred Heart-Saint Cecilia event. Remember what Jesus told us, “ I AM THE LIVING BREAD THAT CAME DOWN FROM , WHOEVER EATS THIS BREAD WILL LIVE FOREVER.” How could one possibly refuse this invitation? Father Zig

ST. CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA, Bishop and Doctor of the Church—June 27

ST CYRIL was born in Alexandria, Egypt, about 374. He strenuously defended the Divine mater- nity of the Blessed against Nestorius, Bishop of Constantinople, who maintained that Jesus Christ, as man only , was born of Mary, and that His Divinity was acquired after His human birth because of His great merits.

He presided over the General Council of Ephesus, at which Nestorius and his doctrines were con- demned. However, St. Cyril paid dearly for this victory in the form of many sufferings at the hands of Nestorius and his followers. He left many exegetical treatises and an apologetical work against Julian the Apostle. He died in 444.

PRAYER God, You made St. Cyril, Your Bishop, the invincible champion of the Divine Maternity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Grant that we who believe her to be truly the Mother of God may be saved through the Incarnation of Christ Your Son. Amen.
