July 5, 2020 3 St. Bede 103 St. Bede Families: Keeping the Faith (During this unprecedented time in our lifetime, when we are required to stay home together while schools and businesses are closed, it’s helpful to find out how families are still living and sharing the faith among themselves. If you have a story to share, please send it to Pat McNally at [email protected], and it will be considered for publication in our bulletin)

The Di Liberto family

Three weeks ago, Pennsylvania entered its “yellow” phase and public Masses resumed at St. Bede. We could not have been happier! We haven’t been members of St. Bede for very long, having only moved to PA last year, but St. Bede has become such an integral and essential part of our lives. Between altar serving, ushering, Children’s Liturgy, Middle School Youth Group and the Respect Life Committee, we have jumped into the St. Bede’s community. This community is very “miss-able” and we yearned for our return – most especially, our return to Jesus in His Most Holy Body and Blood. Like all of you, the past few months have been very challeng- ing for us a family. It was like nothing any of us had ever expe- rienced and there was no manual for how to get through it. Early on we made a decision as a family: to try to offer up the challenges, the disappointments, and the aggravations and to find joy in the present moment. We incorporated one of Monsignor Marine’s ideas from his Thanksgiving Day homily and declared ourselves in a state of “Thanks-living.” We wrote down things for which we were thankful – big things like clear CT scans of friends and “little” things like finding eggs or toilet paper at the store. We tried to be more aware of how blessed our everyday lives were. Sometimes being busy distracts us from really seeing these plentiful little blessings. We also wrote down prayer intentions and offered up our daily challenges for other people who were experiencing even greater challenges and needs. Lent certainly took on an incredibly different look and an opportunity for spiritual growth like no other Lent before it. We also made sure to celebrate. Our Catholic faith offers so many opportunities for celebration and joy and we did not want COVID-19 to change that. So we “attended” weekly Masses at home, prayed family , celebrated Holy Week, the season, and every Feast Day and day, and ended the red restricted phase with a birthday celebration for the Church on Pentecost (we love cake and candles!). Our first Holy Week and Easter Sunday at St. Bede – which we were all so looking forward to – didn’t look like we imagined it but with the spiritual leadership of Monsignor Marine and Father Tom, it made each of us more aware of the gift of the . We had a better insight to the earliest days of the Church following the Crucifixion. We knew what being con- fined and confused and unsure felt like. We leaned on the gift of the more and learned to better live in a state of Thanks-living and joy. We are deeply grateful for Monsignor Marine and Father Tom, our St. Bede brothers and sisters, and the St. Katharine Drexel School community for sharing this journey with us. We continue to remember you all in our .
