580-St. Cecilia Page 6 August 23, 2020 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

My dear parishioners, Today is the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time and the Lord’s Day! The Old Testament reading as well as the Gospel speaks about authority. Put simply, authority is the power or right to give orders, make decisions and enforce obedience. Authority can emanate from an individual or organization. It is used to define a group and to enforce its laws. In the Gospel passage we see how authority is given by the Lord Jesus to the Apostle Peter. will exercise this authority not to “lord it over others” but rather that it will be seen as a ministry to guarantee the Church’s unity. This authority will be known as the PETRINE MINISTRY. This divine authority will be challenged throughout Church history to this very day. The role of Peter, that is, the , has been a controversial one which caused a division between the Eastern (Orthodox) Church and Western (Roman Catholic) Church (1054) AND the Protestant Reformation in the 16th Century. The role of Peter (the Pope) was not one which the Apostle Peter cleverly created for himself nor grabbed selfishly. As we read in today’s Gospel it is an office which Jesus handed to Peter not for his benefit but for the wellbeing of the Church. Right at the very beginning we see how this authority will be challenged by the forces of evil which will try to destroy the Church Christ founded upon the Apostles. The faith and the strength which the Apostle Peter shows will be the bedrock for the An- cient Church. His witness will be the example which countless others will follow in the building up of the Church on earth. The Petrine Ministry is also known as papal primacy because of the Lord singling out Peter above the other Apostles and pre- senting to him the “keys of the kingdom of .” The authority to bind and loose is the power given to the Church which comes through the Petrine Ministry. The Church, led by Peter, becomes the presence of Christ in the world. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, is Peter in our midst. As the successor of the Apostle Peter he leads the Church in our modern world through all its challenges and evils. He is the helmsman navigating the ship, the “bark of Peter,” to the shores of heaven. Chosen by God, this ministry is marked by suffering and self sacrifice in the image of Christ the Savior. This morning I will be celebrating the Divine Liturgy at Saint Demetrius Melkite Greek Catholic Church in Cliffside Park. Their pastor is away on vacation and I will be substituting for him this Sunday. I have biritual faculties from the Vatican to serve in the Eastern Rite Church when needed. The Melkite Greek Catholic Church is one of the Eastern Churches in union with the Pope. The Melkites are former members of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Middle East who entered into union with in 1724. God bless you! Father Zig

ST. MONICA, Widow August 27—Patroness of Mothers and Widows

ST. MONICA came into the world in the year 333. As soon as she was old enough she was married to Patricius, a pagan citi- zen of Tagaste. Although Patricius was a man of high temper, she bore all trials with great patience. Her example and gentle conduct exercised such an influence over him that he was finally converted to . He died the year after his baptism.

The great cross of her life was the conduct of her son, Augustine, who was seventeen years of age when his father died in 371. His mother prayed long and fervently for his conversion. When he left her in Africa to go to Italy, she followed him and found him at , where the words of St. had already convinced him of the false hood of Manichean doctrines, which he abandoned without being entirely converted.

In August, 386, St. Monica had the long-coveted happiness of seeing her son return to God. He was baptized by St. Ambrose on Easter eve the following year and soon after, with his mother and some friends, he set out for Africa. But St. Monica’s work was done; her son was converted; the sinner had become a Saint. She fell sick on the road and died at Ostia, from where they were to embark, in 387.

PRAYER God, Comforter of the afflicted, You accepted St. Monica’s tears to bring about the conversion of her son St. Augustine. Through their intercession, grant that we may have contrition for our sins and experience the grace of Your pardon. Amen.
