Daily Saints - 27 August. Feast of Saint Monica She is the patron saint of alcoholics, alcoholism, difficult marriages, disappointing children, homemakers, housewives, married women, wives, mothers, victims of adultery or unfaithfulness, victims of verbal abuse, widows. Because of her name and place of birth, Monica is assumed to have been born in Thagaste (present-day Souk Ahras, Algeria). She is believed to have been a Berber on the basis of her name. She was married early in life to Patricius, a Roman pagan, who held an official position in Tagaste. Patricius had a violent temper and appears to have been of dissolute habits; apparently, his mother was the same way. Patricius' mother lived with the couple and the duo's temper flares proved to be a constant challenge to young Monica. Monica's alms, deeds, and prayer habits annoyed Patricius, but it is said that he always held her in respect. Monica’s prayers and example finally won her husband and mother-in-law to Christianity. Her husband died in 371, one year after his baptism. Monica had three children who survived infancy: sons Augustine and Navigius and daughter Perpetua. Unable to secure baptism for them, she grieved heavily when Augustine fell ill. In her distress she asked Patricius to allow Augustine to be baptized; he agreed, then withdrew this consent when the boy recovered. But Monica's joy and relief at Augustine's recovery turned to anxiety as he misspent his renewed life being wayward. He was finally sent to school at Madauros. As time passed, Perpetua and Navigius entered the religious life, but unfortunately, Augustine became lazy and uncouth. -

Monica was married in an arranged marriage at a young age to Patricius, an older man who served as a Roman civil servant and did not share his wife’s religion. Together, they raised 3 children: Augustine, Nagivius, and Perpetua although they did not always see eye-to-eye as to what was best for their children. As a Catholic, Monica wanted to have her children baptized, but he would have nothing of it. Patricius had a volatile temper but did not take his anger out with physical violence towards his family. Although married life was difficult for Monica, she maintained a cheerful disposition and prayed for the conversion of her pagan husband. Monica’s prayer, witness and counsel helped other wives who found themselves in similar circumstances with equally difficult husbands.i In time, Monica’s prayers for her husband bore rich fruit. He was baptized into the Church a year before his death in 371. Augustine, the oldest of the three children was fifteen. Monica, now a single mother, dedicated the rest of her life to raising her children alone. Augustine soon began to assert his independence and became the new focus of Monica’sprayers. He fathered a child out of wedlock and Monica was not at all happy with the woman he chose to live with. He began to practice the false religion of Manichaeism which further upset her Christian sensitivities. Her first impulse was to shun her son. Like Saint Joseph, troubled over Mary, peace came after a dream that strengthened her conviction that her son would eventually come around. -

Abstract The Role of Courage in the Experience of Patients with Diabetes Complications Patricia Donohue-Porter Over ten million Americans have diabetes mellitus, a chronic metabolic disease with multiple complications. The person with diabetes complications may experience progressive debilitation from such serious conditions as blindness, kidney failure, nerve damage and cardiovascular disease. These complications are progressive and life- threatening, requiring treatments which may be painful, exhausting and often unsuccessful. -

From a treatise on John by Saint Augustine, bishop Saint Augustine of Hippo Augustine of Hippo: (13 November 354 – 28 August 430 AD), was a Roman African, Manichaean, early Christian theologian, doctor of the Church, and Neoplatonic philosopher from Numidia whose writings influenced the development of the Western Church and Western philosophy, and indirectly all of Western Christianity. After exploring many religions and philosophies he became a Catholic in his thirties. He was the bishop of Hippo Regius in North Africa and is viewed as one of the most important Church Fathers of the Roman Catholic Church for his writings in the Patristic Period. Among his most important works are The City of God, De doctrina Christiana, and Confessions. Two kinds of life The Church recognizes two kinds of life as having been commended to her by God. One is a life of faith, the other a life of vision; one is a life passed on pilgrimage in time, the other in a dwelling place in eternity; one is a life of toil, the other of repose; one is spent on the road, the other in our homeland; one is active, involving labor, the other contemplative, the reward of labor. The first kind of life is symbolized by the apostle Peter, the second by John. All of the first life is lived in this world, and it will come to an end with this world. The second life will be imperfect till the end of this world, but it will have no end in the next world. And so Christ says to Peter: Follow me; but of John he says: If I wish him to remain until I come, what is that to you? Your duty is to follow me. -

Faith That Works: Greed, Patience, and Justice By Jason Huff October 4, 2020 Deuteronomy 24:10-15,17-22; 2 Peter 3:8-15; James 5:1-12 Our final Scripture reading today is James 5:1-12. May God add His richest blessing on the reading of His holy, perfect, and sacred Word. “Now listen, you rich people, weep and wail because of the misery that is coming upon you. Your wealth has rotted, and moths have eaten your clothes. Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and eat your flesh like fire. You have hoarded wealth in the last days. Look! The wages you failed to pay the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord Almighty. You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened yourselves in the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered innocent men, who were not opposing you. Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near. Don't grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door! Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. -

Department of Philosophy Kogi State University Anyigba, Kogi State Nigeria Abstract St Augustine of Hippo (354-430CE) is the most influential Christian philosopher in western Christianity after Paul the Apostle. This paper analyses justice in Augustine‟s political philosophy as contained in His „City of God‟. It will be argued that, we could learn from his answers to bad politicking which resulted in destruction of State. His answers on various theological and philosophical issues have continued to be relevant in modern theological and philosophical debate. A lot can still be learnt from him even in the area of Church‟s response to bad governance. Augustine‟s argument is that Kingdoms (Countries, nations) without justice are robberies, as Kings (Governors) of such are robbers. This supposition is illustrated with three historical allusions namely: the encounter of Alexander the Great with a Pirate, the establishment of Roman Empire by Romulus, and the establishment of Assyrian Empire by Ninus. Contextually, Nigeria as it is today falls into this category of robberies as the British colonial masters forced this unequal union for their personal, self-seeking and self-interest, to satisfy their libido dominandi. An analysis of what Augustine meant by justice will be carried out. Philosophically, Augustine evaluated justice from Neo-Platonic background and theologically from Pauline concept of justice. -

St. Monica Feast: August 27 Facts Feast Day: August 27 Patron: of Wives and Abuse Victims Birth: 331 Death: 387 Saint Monica, also known as Monica of Hippo, is St. Augustine of Hippo's mother. She was born in 331 A.D. in Tagaste, which is present-day Algeria. When she was very young, she was married off to the Roman pagan Patricius, who shared his mother's violent temper. Patricius' mother lived with the couple and the duo's temper flares proved to be a constant challenge to young Monica. While Monica's prayers and Christian deeds bothered Patricius, he is said to have respected her beliefs. Three children were born to Monica and Patricius: Augustine, Navigius, and Perpetua. Unfortunately, Monica was unable to baptize her children and when Augustine fell ill, Monica pleaded with Patricius to allow their son to be baptized. Patricius allowed it, but when Augustine was healthy again, he withrew his permission. For years Monica prayed for her husband and mother-in-law, until finally, one year before Patricius' death, she successfully converted them. As time passed, Perpetua and Navigius entered the religious life, but unfortunately Augustine became lazy and uncouth. This greatly worried Monica, so when Patricius died, she sent the 17-year-old Augustine to Carthage for schooling. While in Carthage, Augustine became a Manichaean, which was a major religion that saw the world as light and darkness, and when one died, they were removed from the world of matter and returned to the world of light, which is where life comes from.
