Exceptionally enlightening! We are online: www.st-cecilia.org 580-St. Cecilia Page 6 May 24, 2015 Pentecost Sunday My dear parishioners,

We celebrate the Lord’s Day on this 50th and final day of Easter, PENTECOST SUNDAY! It was on this day that the Risen Lord had sent the Holy Spirit upon His Apostles and disciples enabling them to proclaim the Good News of Salva- tion with enthusiasm and courage.

Added to today’s festival is the FIRST HOLY MASS of the newly ordained Father Jakub Grzybowski and Father Lukasz Iwanc- zuk at the 12:15 p.m. Mass in Saint Cecilia Church. I know that all of you will be joining me and Father Marcin in offering our support to the new priests. As the Lord sent the Holy Spirit to guide the Church, so too does He send us shepherds to tend His flock. Our God provides for His Church in so many ways as signs of His love for us.

Our American holiday of Memorial Day on Monday marks the unofficial start of summer. We will celebrate Holy Mass at the parish cemetery on Monday at 9 o’clock in the morning. In the event of rain we will celebrate the Holy Mass in the church. At the Mass we will bless the newly built cross at the cemetery. The corpus of the Crucified Jesus was removed from the old cement cross, cleaned and fastened to the newly constructed wooden cross. The cost of this project was paid for by donations received from parishioners. Also, I am most grateful to a parishioner who wishes to remain anonymous for their donation of over $1,000 to cover the cost of additional landscaping work which will be done at the cemetery over the next few days. I thank God for the generous people we have in our parish who joyfully give to the Lord. May He in His goodness richly bless them!

Next Sunday a special collection will be taken as we exit the church for the WOUNDED WARRIOR FUND. As we remember all those who died in service for our country, let us remember with our offering next Sunday all those who have suffered greatly and continue to heal as a result of military service.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that EDWARD GABLE will be the recipient of this year’s VIVERE CHRISTUS EST AWARD which will be presented by Bishop Serratelli on Sunday, June 14th at Saint Church in Clifton. The event will take place during the celebration of Vespers which begins at 3:30 p.m. Ed is a long time parishioner of Saint Cecilia’s and has always been active within the parish. Among the things he is involved with are: CCD in- structor; lectors coordinator; Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, usher, coordinator of the “True Love Waits” program, AND MORE! We extend our best wishes to Ed and pray that the Lord will continue to bless him!

Now that the warm weather is here I am looking forward to our upcoming parish picnic on Sun- day, June 14th at the Firemen’s Field on Beech Street. Please check the bulletin for details.

God bless you! Fr. Zig

ST. PHILIP NERI, Priest May 26 — Patron of Rome

St. Philip was born in Florence in 1515, the very same year that St. Teresa was born at Avila in Spain. From his sixth year he was characterized by the most perfect obedience toward his parents. Having finished his classical studies at eighteen, he was sent to an uncle who lived near Monte Cassino. But St. Philip, desirous of serving God without worldly distractions, went to Rome in 1533 and became preceptor to the children of a Florentine nobleman. Even at this period of his life he obtained a great reputation for sanctity. While teaching others he devoted him- self to the study of philosophy and theology. His desire to save souls caused him to establish the Confraternity of the Blessed Trinity in 1548, with the object of serving pilgrims and the sick. In obedience to his confessor he became a priest in June 1551, at nearly thirty-six year of age. He now began to dwell in a small community near the Church of St. , continuing his mortified life. In the same year he laid the foundation for the Congregation of the Oratory. In 1575, Gregory XIII approved it, and in 1583 gave to St. Philip the new church of La Vallicella, which is still called La Chiesa Nuova — The New Church Here the Saint lived, edifying all Rome by his virtues and laboring zealously for souls in the ministry to the confessional. He en- joyed the favor of Pius IV and V, Gregory XIII and XIV AND Clement VIII, and the friendship of many great men, among whom was St. Charles Borromeo. After a life of penance and of eminent usefulness, St. Philip died in 1595 and he was canonized in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV. PRAYER: God, you never cease raising Your faithful servants to the glory of holiness. Grant that we may be inflamed by the fire of the Holy Spirit which so wonderfully burned in the heart of St. Philip. Amen.
