The Zoogeomorphology of Case-Building Caddisfly Larvae
The zoogeomorphology of case-building caddisfly larvae by Richard Mason A Doctoral thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of Doctor of Philosophy of Loughborough University (June 2020) © Richard Mason 2020 i Abstract Caddisfly (Trichoptera) are an abundant and widespread aquatic insect group. Caddisfly larvae of most species build cases from silk and fine sediment at some point in their lifecycle. Case- building caddisfly have the potential to modify the distribution and transport of sediment by: 1) altering sediment properties through case construction, and 2) transporting sediment incorporated into cases over the riverbed. This thesis investigates, for the first time, the effects of bioconstruction by case-building caddisfly on fluvial geomorphology. The research was conducted using two flume experiments to understand the mechanisms of caddisfly zoogeomorphology (case construction and transporting sediment), and two field investigations that increase the spatial and temporal scale of the research. Caddisfly cases varied considerably in mass between species (0.001 g - 0.83 g) and grain sizes used (D50 = 0.17 mm - 4 mm). As a community, caddisfly used a wide range of grain-sizes in case construction (0.063 mm – 11 mm), and, on average, the mass of incorporated sediment was 38 g m-2, in a gravel-bed stream. This sediment was aggregated into biogenic particles (cases) which differed in size and shape from their constituent grains. A flume experiment determined that empty cases of some caddisfly species (tubular case-builders; Limnephilidae and Sericostomatidae) were more mobile than their incorporated sediment, but that dome shaped Glossosomatidae cases moved at the same entrainment threshold as their constituent grains, highlighting the importance of case design as a control on caddisfly zoogeomorphology. -

The decision to oviposit on a host plant that is inferior for larval development could have significant consequences for their offspring. Host plant quality can affect larval development and survival directly via nutrients and/or defensive chemicals, as well as indirectly by influencing larval condition and consequently their susceptibility to pathogens. In this thesis I examine the relationship between host preference and plant quality for larval performance in the cabbage looper, Trichoplusia ni (Hubner). I also examine the relationship between host plant quality, insect condition, immune responsiveness and resistance to pathogens. No-choice, two-choice, and multiple-choice experiments were performed to measure adult oviposition preference and neonate larval preference for six plant species. Two baseline and induced immune parameters, haemocyte numbers and haemolymph phenoloxidase (PO) activity, were estimated for larvae on two host plants, broccoli and cucumber. Haemolymph protein concentration was assessed as an indication of insect condition, and the susceptibility of larvae to T. ni single nucleopolyhedrovirus (SNPV) was used as a measure of disease resistance. Trichoplusia ni adults and larvae both preferred the same two plant species out of six that maximised larval performance. -

Introduction The following list is from published feeding records up to 1972, of selected aquatic insects with some interpretive comments.Food types are listed as 1. diatoms and algae (a); 2. detritus (d); and 3. animal (c). Percentages of each food, when given, are listed in the same order as the respective food categories. Where one category comprised more than 75% of the diet, only the dominant food type is listed. An attempt was made to find references at the species level, but where these were not available, more general references at the generic or familial level are included. Data reported by Coffman (1967) are also shown in Coffman, Cummins and Wuycheck (1971) and those of Minshall (1965) are repeated in Minshall (1967). MODULE 2: RAPID IDENTIFICATION OF SPECIES (AND RECOGNITION OF DISTINCTIVE TAXA) - BY RICHARD CHADD Introduction to this module While some species need a bit of work (and time) to identify, there are a great many which are instantly recognisable, or, with a quick check with a microscope or hand lens, can be identified in a trice. The Water Stick Insect, Ranatra linearis (Linn.) (Heteroptera: Nepidae), pictured on the left, looks like no other British insect from either the terrestrial or aquatic environment. There is really no excuse to stop at Family level if you come across one. The purpose of this module is, therefore, to give you some guidelines to allow you to recognise where you can get the 'easy wins' - taxa which need not result in additional time for analysis to species level. Ultimately, it would be a benefit to the environment to do everything you can to the lowest possible level, but of course, time can be an issue. The module is manifestly not designed to be an identification guide. It aims to tell you which taxa are worth a quick stab at (and which are not) and which features you need to look at to undertake either recognition or swift identification. You're expected to do some work. For example, you might take, say, a leech and give it the once over, to decide if you can easily identify it and, if you can, which feature(s) you need to look at to tell you what it is. This module gives you the starting-point to make this assessment - the actual identification is up to you.
