The objectivesof the program are to provide the student with the basic terminology and fundamental knowledge and skills in machining (year 1)and to teach him/her to set up and operate machine toolsand make or repair' metal parts, tools, and machines (year 2). Introductory materials include recommended secondary and postsecondaryprograms. The nine units in year 1 are entitled introduction, precision measuring instruments, work layout, benchwork, grinding, drillpress, power saws, basic engine lathe work, and mill work. The twelve units inyear 2 are entitled advanced blueprint reading, turret lathe, surface grinder, shaper, tool and cutter grinder, heat treatment, hydraulicpress, computer numerically controlled machining, machining math calculations, machine shop projects, oxyacetylene cutting/weldingand brazing, and shielded metal arc welding. Each unit containsa unit overview, prerequisites, standards, suggested instructiontimes, and tasks. A task sheet for each task details the performanceobjective, performance actions, performance standards, suggested instruction time, resources, and related technical information.Additional references include matrixes of occupational competencies, suggested job skills, and a list of equipment. Edward Henderson Jr. Sponsoring Agencies: The School District of Greenville County and Greenville Technical College c/o P.O. Box 2848- 301 Camperdown Way Greenville, SC 29602 Program Development Period: July 1, 1983 through June 30, 1984 PURPOSE: To develop a continuous line of vocational training1.n similar Machine Shop programsso that students may continue their career / vocational educationat the secondary and post-secondary levels with -t loss of timeor waste of effort in repeating tasks th, have been mastered previously. To provide a system where teacherscan cooperate effec- tively in providing a continuous occupationaldevelopment program where the level and type of training that leads to entry-level employment skills will be clearto students, teachers, other educators, and potential employers. METHOD: Machine Shop instructor representatives fromthe three secondary level career centers of The SchoolDistrict of Greenville County and the post-secondary levelMachine Technology Department Head from GreenvilleTechnical College were brought together in task forcecommittee meetings and workshops to ,survey very similarareas of vocational training to identify possible overlapsor gaps as students continue machine shop training from the secondary level to the post-secondarylevel. In addition, lateral articulation of machine shopprograms at the secondary level was promoted. This Articulated, Performance-based InstructionObjectives Guide for Machine Shop, was developed by the Task Force Committee on Machine Shop to facilitate articulation. The Task Force Committee, by the task analysisprocess, identified the minimum essential competenciesfor the secondary machine shop graduate to continuetraining at :he next higher level of educationor for successful ii 5 initial entry into the labor market in the trade. Major objectives for competency were stated, performanceto obtain the objectives were clarified, enablingactions were identified and placed in sequential order, instruction time was estimated, and performance standardswere stated. Finally, outcome-referenced (criterion- referenced) measures of performancewere developed as a guide in articulating (articulation). RESULTS: As a result of the project development phase, the Articulated, Performance-based Instruction Objectives Guide for Machine Shopwas developed. This articulation guide, however, is not a final product sinceit must be field trial tested and revised. Modifications and improvements to the guideare expected since the process of education must be continually reviewedto ensure that objectives are valid andare being met as best they can be met under given conditions. Prior to development of this articulation guide,an Articulation Policies and Procedures Guidewas developed to aid articulation activities and was used to direct program and product (guide) development activities. Workshop 3uides, developed and refined duringan earlier phase of the program, were used to assist taskforce committee participants in obtaining task analysisdata, writing performance-based objectives, identifyingperfor- mance actions to reach the objectives, stating performance standards, and developing outcome-referencedtests. These how-to-do-it guidesare usable at the instructional level as well as at the supervisory level.
