Setting the Stage-The War of 1812 Maunsel White (1783-1863) was born near Limerick, Ireland and orphaned at age six. He arrived in America at age thirteen and lived in Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. However, little is known about his life until he joined the New Orleans militia. In 1814, Captain Maunsel White, at the age of 31, was placed in charge of a white mens militia regiment, named the Louisiana Blues, under the command of Major Jean Baptiste Plauch, who reported directly to Major General Andrew Jackson, commander of the Seventh Military District and the United States forces in the Gulf campaign against Britains blockade of American ports. General Jackson was later elected President of the United States in 1828.[1] Major Plauch headed the New Orleans uniformed militia companies totaling two hundred and eighty-seven men.[2]Each of the four companies had its own distinctive, colorful uniform, and many of their members had previous military experience in France, Saint-Domingue (Haiti), and Latin America.

  • The Devil Is in the Details 8-12-15.Pdf
NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard The Devil is in the Details Deviled eggs, deviled ham, a printer’s devil and who knows what the devil else! To determine the meaning of these and other terms and idioms, well, The Devil is in the details. Deviled egg lightly sprinkled with fresh paprika Seems when it comes to determining the origin of the expression, The Devil is in the details, the details are devilishly dumbfounding. The late William Safire, presidential speechwriter and author of “On Language” in the New York Times Magazine, investigated this topic in 1989: “Let's turn to the man who is culling and updating the next edition of Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations: Justin D. Kaplan, biographer of Mark Twain and a world-class scholar. ‘We’ve had little success with God (or the Devil) is in the details,’ says Mr. Kaplan. ‘We know that Mies van der Rohe used it in discussing architecture; Flaubert has been suggested, but nobody can find it in his writings. I think it may come from John Ruskin, because it sounds like him on the subject of workmanship, but we need the specific citation.’” It is widely accepted that the devil version of the phrase is a variation on the God phrase, though the exact origin of both is uncertain. And the word detail is used in both the singular and the plural. The Devil is in the Details means that, when mistakes are made, they usually occur in the small details of a project.

  • Good Stuff from Our Kitchen
Good Stuff from Our Kitchen Lee C. Adkins and Kathy Adkins October 20, 2020 PREFACE i Preface In February 1995, I started putting together this cookbook. Kathy (the main food tester and critic) and I (head cook and bottle washer) wanted to write down all of the commonly used recipes that have been gathering in our recipe archives. You know the kind I'm talking about, card files that contain cryptic, food stained notes passed along to us by our friends and families. By April, I had started to include new recipes that we tried and liked. So, the outcome of our `little' project has turned into this book that documents many of the wonderful foods that we have cooked and enjoyed since then. Bunny and I hope that you will try a few of these and think of us as you enjoy them. Of course, if you try something and don't like it, then think of someone else. Feel free to modify any of these as you like and to pass along the ones you like to your friends and family. Wherever possible we have tried to cite the appropriate source or inspiration for the recipes included. I hope we haven't offended those whose recipes we've modified and won't be sued by those whose published recipes we have used so freely. Here are a few notes on usage. Everything shown in blue is an internal link. Click on it and you will be whisked to page to which the reference refers. This includes every recipe listed in the table of contents and in the extensive index.
