THE 1.1BEARDS" VERSUS THE "BARDS" AMONG INDIAN MUSLIMS IN SOUTH AFRICA: A 21st Century Story of Travelling Cartoons and Protests GOOLAM VAHED• ABSTRACT This paper examines Indian Muslims in post-apartheid South Africa, with particular respect to the inclination by non-Muslims to view Muslims as a homogeneous monolith, and the divisions among Muslims over traditions, beliefs, and practices, which run contrary to this wide-held perception. Muslims are divided by race, class, gender, and ethnicity; theologically they run the gamut from orthodox to progressive; and among themselves they are boxed into categories like Tablighi, Deobandi, Modernist, Salafi, and so on; and their cultural identities are cumulative rather than singular. They are also reacting in different ways to changes ushered by the demise of apartheid, globalisation, challenges posed by modernity, and the "War on Terror". At the extremes are those seeking to withdraw into parochial (re)-imagined Islamic identities and those who have wholeheartedly embraced the new, democratic South Africa. In-between are a multiplicity ofidentities and attitudes. Traditional Ulema (religious clergy) wield power among Muslims and their views are usually hegemonic. They have the support of the majority of Muslims and seek to sideline recalcitrant voices by declaring their beliefs as "untruths". Dissenting voices are, however, emerging among Muslim intelligentsia, professionals, and gender activists outside the control of the ·Ulema, who are challenging the dominant status quo. Muslim identities will continue to shift and transform n response to changing circumstances in a particularly unstable global and national political context. This local tradition does not rely on the written sources and instead carried through oral means and majorly revolves around the lives of the common people. The area of the study of this paper is the hilly region of Kumaon and Garhwal in the state of Uttarakhand. The paper discusses the local beliefs and practices of the Uttarakhand region. It explores the thin boundary between the local and pan-Indian and the relation in which one co-exists in the other. This paper takes a journey from the brief history of religion practiced in the region to the different cults venerated in the region. Analyzing these local cults and practices, the paper finally depicts the processes through which the folk is assimilated into the fold of mainstream Brahmanical culture. Tourists and Buddhist pilgrims travel from all over the world to the caves near here. The tree that has sprouted in the dome suggests that nature is stronger than our human creations, while the crumpled sign on the dome evokes worries that plastic might ultimately overtake even nature. It is the “tank” for Ghrishneshvar, one of a set of twelve major Shiva temples scattered around India. Renovated under the patronage of Queen Ahilyabai in 1770 CE, Shivalay has a symmetry and relative simplicity typical of the many religious monuments attributed to this most famous member of the Holkars, a royal family with pastoralist roots. Tourists and Buddhist pilgrims travel from all over the world to the caves near here. Men from nearby villages take water from Shivalay to pour on their village gods on religiously significant days, especially during the monsoon, the season when this photo was taken. The tree that has sprouted in the dome suggests that nature is stronger than our human creations, while the crumpled sign on the dome evokes worries that plastic might ultimately overtake even nature.
