Heinekenprijs voor de Biochemie en Biofysica 2020 toegekend aan Bruce Stillman, hoogleraar en president van Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (Verenigde Staten). Stillman krijgt de prijs voor zijn baanbrekende onderzoek naar de manier waarop DNA in eukaryotische cellen gekopieerd wordt, een proces dat van fundamenteel belang is voor het leven op aarde. De Heinekenprijzen zijn de grootste internationale wetenschapsprijzen van Nederland. Elke twee jaar worden deze toegekend aan vijf gerenommeerde onderzoekers. De prijs is in 1964 in het leven geroepen door Alfred H. Heineken, als eerbetoon aan zijn vader Dr. Henry P. Heineken. In de eerste week van juni worden de prijswinnaars van 2020 bekend gemaakt. Stillman ontdekte verschillende eiwitten die een rol spelen in DNA-replicatie Stillman’s interesse in DNA-replicatie begon al tijdens zijn promotieonderzoek naar de manier waarop het DNA van adenovirussen wordt gekopieerd. Later verruilde hij de adenovirussen voor het polyomavirus simian virus 40 (SV40), een DNA-virus dat de potentie heeft om tumoren te veroorzaken, en uiteindelijk gebruikte hij een gist als modelsysteem. Stillman ontdekte vele belangrijke factoren die betrokken zijn bij DNA-replicatie in eukaryo- tische cellen. Eukaryotische cellen zijn cellen met een celkern. Vrijwel alle meercellige organismen, zoals planten, dieren en mensen, zijn eukaryoten. Stillman is een van de ontdekkers van het eiwit RPA (Replication Protein A) dat aan een streng DNA bindt om te voorkomen dat het opkrult zodat het enzym polymerase de streng DNA kan kopiëren. Verder ontdekte hij de replicatiefactor C en het molecuul CAF1 dat helpt om verpakkingseiwitten te binden rondom het net gekopieerde DNA. In zijn latere onderzoek richtte Stillman zich op het begin van de replicatie: waar op het DNA start het kopieerproces en welke eiwitmoleculen zijn hierbij betrokken? Hij ontdekte één van de bindingsfactoren, ABF-1, dat bindt op plekken waar het kopiëren start. Heinekenprijs voor de Biochemie en Biofysica 2020 Het onderzoek van Stillman heeft geleid tot belangrijke inzichten waardoor we begrijpen hoe ons erfelijk materiaal wordt gekopieerd, en hoe dit samenhangt met vele andere processen in de cel. Daarmee heeft hij een geheel nieuw en belangrijk onderzoeksveld geopend. Zijn onderzoek draagt bij aan een beter begrip van het ontstaan van mutaties die kunnen leiden tot erfelijke ziekten zoals kanker. Over de laureaat Bruce William Stillman (1953) is afkomstig uit Melbourne, Australië. Hij studeerde aan de University of Sydney en promoveerde in 1979 aan de John Curtin School of Medical Research van de Australian National University op onderzoek naar de replicatie van het adenovirus DNA. Hij zette daarna zijn loopbaan voort in de Verenigde Staten, waar hij als postdoctoral fellow startte aan Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. In 1985 werd Stillman hoogleraar. In 1994 werd hij benoemd tot directeur van Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, negen jaar later als president van dit onderzoeksinstituut, functies die hij nog altijd bekleedt. Stillman is lid van de Amerikaanse National Academy of Science, de American Academy of Arts and Sciences, fellow van de Royal Society in Londen, een corresponderend lid van de Australian Academy of Science en lid van de Europese Molecular Biology Organization. Stillmans werk werd al vele malen bekroond, onder andere met de Alfred P. Sloan Prize in 2004, de Louisa Gross Horwitz Prize in 2005, de Herbert Tabor Research Award in 2014 en vorig jaar met de Canada Gairdner International Award. Het zijn de meest prestigieuze prijzen voor kunst en wetenschap van Nederland. Elke twee jaar worden vijf internationaal gerenommeerde onderzoekers en één kunstenaar die in Nederland woont en werkt, geëerd. Het zijn allen laureaten die met hun werk nieuwe perspectieven bieden, onverwachte doorbraken realiseren en nieuwe wegen voor anderen openen. Sinds 2010 wordt ook de toekomstige generatie aangemoedigd. Vier veel- belovende jonge onderzoekers, werkzaam bij Nederlandse onderzoeksinstellingen, ontvangen de Heineken Young Scientists Awards. De laureaten worden geselecteerd door jury’s die zijn samengesteld uit leden van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen (KNAW), De Jonge Akademie en internationale experts. De wetenschappelijke Heinekenprijzen bedragen elk 200.000 dollar. De kunstenaar ontvangt 100.000 euro, waarvan de helft bestemd is voor een publicatie en/of tentoonstelling. Heineken (1886-1971). Dat jaar werd de Dr. H.P. Heineken- prijs voor de Biochemie en Biofysica voor het eerst uitgereikt. Aan deze prijs werden vervolgens nog vijf Heinekenprijzen toegevoegd: de Dr. A.H. Heinekenprijs voor de Kunst (1988), de Geneeskunde (1989), de Milieuwetenschappen (1990) en de Historische Wetenschap (1990) en de C.L. de Carvalho-Heinekenprijs voor de Cognitieve Wetenschappen (2006). Citation Deputy Chancellor, I have the honour to present Bruce William Stillman for admission to the degree of Doctor of Science (honoris causa). Dr Bruce Stillman is President of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. A native of Australia, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree with honors at The University of Sydney and a PhD at the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the Australian National University. He then moved to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 1979 and has been at the Laboratory ever since, being promoted to the scientific staff in 1981. Dr. Stillman has been Director of the Cancer Center at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory since 1992, a position he still holds. In 1994, he succeeded Nobel Prize winner Dr James D Watson as Director of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and was appointed President in 2003. Dr Stillman's research focuses on the mechanism and regulation of duplication of DNA and chromatin in cells, a process that ensures accurate inheritance of genetic information from one cell generation to the next. For these research accomplishments, Dr Stillman has received a number of honors including election as a Fellow of The Royal Society in 1993. In 1994, Dr Stillman was awarded the Julian Wells Medal and in 1999, Dr Stillman was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia for service to scientific research.

Heineken Prize for Biochemistry and Biophysics to Bruce Stillman, President of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in the state of New York. Stillman is receiving the prize for his ground-breaking research on the way DNA is copied in eukaryotic cells, a process of fundamental importance to life on earth. The Heineken Prizes are the Netherlands’ most prestigious international science prizes. Every two years the prizes are awarded to five leading researchers. They were instituted in 1964 by Alfred H. Heineken in honour of his father Dr Henry P. Heineken. The 2020 laureates will be announced in the first week of June. Stillman discovered various proteins that are involved in DNA replication Bruce Stillman started to become interested in DNA replication when doing his PhD research on how the DNA of adenoviruses is copied. He later switched his focus from adenoviruses to the polyomavirus simian virus 40 (SV40), a DNA virus with the potential for causing tumours, and he ultimately used a yeast as the model system. Stillman discovered numerous important factors that are involved in DNA replication in eukaryotic cells. These cells have a nucleus. Virtually all multicellular organisms — such as plants, animals, and humans — are eukaryotes. Stillman co-discovered the RPA protein (Replication Protein A), which binds to a strand of DNA to prevent it from winding back on itself so that the enzyme polymerase can copy the strand of DNA.
