Ex Officio Michael P. Kelly A letter from the President & CEO

Dear Friends,

This year the Chicago Academy of Sciences / Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum was nominated as a finalist for the 2019 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The medal is the nation’s highest honor for museums and libraries that make exceptional contributions to their communities, and our nomination specifically noted our education efforts, both in the Museum and across Chicago.

It is fitting that we were recognized for our education programs as they are truly the element that binds all aspects of the Museum together. We have always been intentional in integrating education throughout the Museum and to this day the Nature Museum provides more in-classroom teaching than any other museum in Chicago.

We share the resources and knowledge of the Museum’s collections to enhance teacher capacity and improve the quality of classroom lessons. We welcome students on field trips to the Museum, where they interact with our living animals, learn about local nature and wildlife through workshops, and enjoy our diverse and informative exhibits. And we support networks of school administrators, staff, and teachers as they incorporate innovative science education at every level of their curriculum.

With our focus on local ecology and our commitment to fostering hands-on connections to science for students, our Education Department constitutes one of the most effective sources of STEM education in Chicago.

This year’s recognition was no small feat and I want to thank our dedicated staff, volunteers, supporters, and leadership for their joint efforts in making wonder come alive at the Nature Museum.

Naturally yours,

Deb Lahey President & CEO Year in review

At the Chicago Academy of Sciences / Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, we aspire to foster a positive connection to the natural world in everything we do. Whether that is by visiting the Museum, contributing to conservation research, or enjoying our rich and engaging family programs, we strive spark wonder and excitement in nature and science among our visitors, our volunteers, and the people of Chicago. And we saw those connections thrive throughout 2019.

• The Nature Museum’s community-based science programs – the Butterfly Monitoring Network, the Calling Frog Survey, and the Illinois Odonate Survey – collectively gathered data from 117 census routes in 2019, data now informing conservation research across the county.

• We trained leaders in the Chicago Conservation Corps from every ward in the city, who are now working to improve the quality of life in their communities through efforts that increase sustainability, improve access to green space, and empower residents to become stewards of their local environment.

• This past year, the Nature Museum hosted two of its most successful temporary exhibits: Dora and Diego: Let’s Explore! and A Life in the Wild: The Photography of Thomas Mangelsen. The former is a collection of engaging and kid-friendly activities while the latter celebrates the works of the legendary wildlife photographer.

• After its successful creation and launch here at the Museum, our exhibit Weather to Climate is now traveling to science museums across the country, informing communities about the urgency and reality of a changing climate.

• The 2019 Butterfly Ball raised more than $2 million in support of the Nature Museum’s mission to create positive relationships between people and nature. We recognized the leadership of both Holly and Matt Maloney and Chuck Douglas with the sixth annual Award for Leadership in Support of Science and Education.

• Finally, in 2019, the Nature Museum welcomed more than 287,000 visitors through our front doors – the highest number we’ve had in more than 10 years.

I am proud of our successes over the past year and of the unique way the Nature Museum continues to inspire the wonder in all of us, and I am pleased to share with you our financial assessment for the 2019 Fiscal Year.

Joan Walker Board Chair Financials
