2016 ANNUAL REPORT

The trusted source for protecting people and preserving the planet Dear Campbell Family,

It has been another fantastic year for the Campbell Institute as the transformative force in EHS! Our positive impact continues through our world-class events, insightful presentations, compelling thought leadership – all things that constitute the core of the Institute’s sphere of influence. At the end of this first year of chairmanship, I am pleased to say that the Institute has experienced expansion not only in the diversity of new members and partners, but also in scope with added events and new research topics. This year’s Annual Report acknowledges the contributions of participants and individuals who have made the Institute the EHS center of excellence at the National Safety Council and beyond.

On each page of this report, you will find evidence of how the Campbell Institute continues to fulfill its mission of enabling organizations to achieve and sustain environmental, health, and safety excellence. Here are some of the highlights:

■ Six new organizations have joined the Institute as members and partners ■ We held the third annual Campbell Institute Symposium with a record number of attendees From the Chairman From ■ We hosted the first annual Member Benchmarking Conference with participation from 20 members ■ We added to the Campbell Institute’s body of research with new white papers on employee wellbeing and sustainability and the environment ■ We continue to share what we are learning through our website and library with nearly 18,000 visitors in 2016

While this report acknowledges the collective efforts of Institute members, volunteers, and staff, one person in particular deserves special recognition. Many of you may know that Michael Henderek has for many years not only served as a leader of the Campbell Institute, but was one of its “founding fathers.” His vision and passion for EHS built the launching pad for all that the Institute has been able to achieve, from benefiting members and broadening our reach to most importantly, saving lives around the world. Mike, because of you, the Campbell Institute has lifted off from merely a concept to reaching new heights year after year. Many warm thanks for your service and dedication to the Institute!

Although we have accomplished much since the Institute’s founding, there are still many relevant and emerging issues in EHS that will we continue to lead on. We accept this challenge knowing that each new participant in the Institute brings us closer to attaining our mission of protecting people and preserving the planet. If our mission speaks to you, please consider joining our constellation of members and partners and engage with the best of the best in EHS. We are waiting for you!

Sincerely,

Douglas Pontsler Chairman, Campbell Institute

: 15 Campbell Institute | 2016 Annual Report Research is at the heart of what the Campbell Institute does – sharing proven knowledge and practical methods to protect people and preserve the planet. We recognize opportunities to advance the science of EHS through original research with the help of Research the Research Subcommittee. This year, the Institute produced three new white papers:

Defining EHS Excellence: Best Practices from Campbell Award Winners 1 Within these pages, you will find examples of how fourteen Campbell Award-winning organizations have achieved success in protecting their workers, eliminating health hazards, improving the environment, and conserving energy, all while improving business performance and increasing profitability.

These examples draw attention not only to the organizations’ concrete EHS initiatives, but also to their impact. While these applications originate from the first twelve years of the Award from 2004 to 2015, they actually describe decades of EHS achievements through continuous improvement efforts. The variety of Award winners in terms of industry, geographic location, corporate size/ structure, and business systems creates a holistic perspective of EHS management that should be relevant to any organization seeking excellence in EHS.

17 Campbell Institute | 2016 Annual Report Profiles in Sustainability: Business, Community, and Environment 2 When most organizations think about increasing “sustainability” or ramping up their sustainability activities, it’s likely that they are thinking only about the “green” aspect of sustainability - shrinking their carbon footprint, reducing waste, and doing better by the environment. A quick poll of Campbell Institute members reveals, however, that sustainability means much more than just being green. The term implies a corporate responsibility not only to the planet, but also to the organization’s people by protecting worker health and safety, and to profitability by ensuring a viable business for many years to come.

As companies develop in their sustainability journey, they should see a broadening of the scope of “sustainability” from merely environmental practices to the sustenance of the business and the communities they occupy.
