December 4, 2008

Dear Conference Participants: Welcome to Chicago United’s 40th Anniversary Gala – a ruby anniversary for an organization with a sterling record of achievement. This is an especially joyous occasion for ComEd because we have been a torchbearer of Chicago United’s cause since its inception. It is humbling to acknowledge all that has been accomplished in 40 years to live the dream of inclusion and equality. It is equally inspiring to acknowledge the vigilant call to leadership and responsibility that Chicago United continues to make of each of us. I join you in saluting Ms. Indra K. Nooyi, chairman and CEO of PepsiCo, as recipient of this year’s National Bridge Award. Ms. Nooyi has been a steadfast steward of promoting the values of diversity and inclusion across PepsiCo. Like Ms. Nooyi, the members of Chicago United recognize that an enterprise-wide commitment to diversity is key to building a corporate reputation because it is the right thing to do for employees, for consumers, for our communities, and for shareholders. ComEd and our 5,600 employees salute Chicago United on 40 years of groundbreaking accomplishments. We also congratulate Chicago United President Gloria Castillo for her leadership. My colleagues and I at ComEd thank everyone affiliated with Chicago United for their role in growing diversity at the executive level. We look forward to advancing the cause that began four decades ago as we continue working side-by-side toward workplaces and communities that allow every one of us to achieve our greatest potential.

Sincerely,

Frank M. Clark Chairman and CEO

Acknowledgements

Dear Conference Participants,

For 40 years Chicago United has maintained the dialogue among multiracial senior leadership driving corporate and minority-owned businesses and civic and non-profit leadership in the common goal of a creating a stronger social and economic climate for all races. During that time, our dedicated members have directly led many of the city’s important initiatives including, but not limited to, collaborating with other civic organiza- tions to create the Regional Transit Authority; creating a special Task Force on Education which provided executive leadership to local schools; helping secure the passage of the Illinois Affordable Housing Act; developing Invest in Chicago, a West Pullman community revitalization effort; measuring and benchmarking racial diversity in Chicago Corporations through the Corporate Diversity Profile; promoting board-ready minority executives in the Business Leaders of Color publications; focusing attention toward multiracial leadership de- velopment at the Annual Changing Color of Leadership Conference; and building a stronger regional economy and minority businesses of scale through Five Forward.

It is through fierce constructive conversation and collaboration, steadfast strategies that are the foundation of all our programs and events like today’s Changing Color of Leadership Conference and Bridge Awards ceremonies, that Chicago United fosters inclusion and provides an opportunity for senior executives from all racial and ethnic groups to learn from one another, confront and break down racial barriers and achieve shared objectives.

Discussion of accomplishments of the past forty years must include acknowledgement of Barack Obama’s exhilarating victory as momentous and impactful because of the lessons it teaches. It teaches individuals, once again, that persistence, intelligence and an open mind can lead to personal advancement. But the victory also creates a classroom in which corporate leaders should take a seat. Obama and his campaign offer a roadmap for improvements that can, and should, be shaped by diversity and inclusion. His appeal to voters from different ethnicities, generations and geographies was enriched by the diverse campaign team he assembled for their mix of experience and viewpoints. His victory demonstrates that when we bring diverse thinking to the table, we all gain tremendous benefits and a competitive advantage.

A conference of this depth of talent and content cannot be developed and delivered without the support of an active membership and many friends.

– 4 – Acknowledgements

First, I would like to thank Jim Skogsbergh, chairman of the Chicago United Board of Directors, and all its members for their unwavering support. A great deal of respect and gratitude to our partners at ComEd who is a founding member of Chicago United, an inaugural supporter of this conference and today’s presenting sponsor. ComEd has provided extraordinary leadership and serves as an example for some of the best diversity practices in this city. Enormous thanks to all today’s sponsors and especially our 40th Anniversary Co-Chairs for your extraordinary support.

Chicago United also appreciates the partnership with ABC7 who has generously run public service promotions and lent the talents of Cheryl Burton and Ravi Baichwal. We also appreciate the advertising support of Crain’s Chicago Business, the Tribune Company, Minority Business News USA and Women’s Business Development Center.

We extend a very special thanks to James Skogsbergh and Advocate Health Care for donating a portion of our printed materials and Novak Law Offices for providing the conference briefcases. Finally we thank each and every member of Chicago United for their personal and organizational resources to build the conference and support its mission.

David Rudd and the team at The Axis Agency have helped this organization achieve remarkable and invaluable media coverage surrounding the events of this year. Judy Mathews, president of Community Interface, has become the most versatile consultant and strategist imaginable.

Finally, the team at Chicago United is without a doubt the hardest working group ever assembled. I can only begin to express my personal appreciation to Sal Bayron, Janice Buford, Teresa Sarna and Ana Souchet.

To all who made this conference a success, thank you!

Sincerely,

Gloria Castillo President Chicago United

1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m. Workshops (continued)

Workshop IIA Northwest Hall 1, Lower Level Diversity and Organizational Performance: Quantifying the Connection Presenter: Cedric Herring, Ph.D, Professor of Sociology and Public Policy, University of Illinois at Chicago, Department of Sociology Moderator: Nik Theodore, Ph.D, Director, Center for Urban Economic Development, University of Illinois The measurable impact of diversity in today’s business environment is a hotly debated issue. Many theories and hypotheses have been tested to determine its impact on corporate productivity and profitability. This workshop session will illustrate the connection between diversity and firm value by examining a case study conducted by the University of Illinois at Chicago’s Department of Sociology in collaboration with the University’s Institute of Government and Public Affairs. This session will present the results of the study’s four hypotheses and answer the omnipresent question: Does diversity pay?

Workshop IIIA Northwest Hall 2, Lower Level Career-Building Learning Experiences for Winning Diverse Workforces Presenter: LaShana Jackson, Director, Diversity & Inclusion, Aon Corporation Moderator: Jacki Robinson-Ivy, Vice President, Public Affairs and Government Relations, Northern Trust Diverse leadership is a business imperative in today’s global economy. Selecting and developing talent is crucial to the future success of an organization. Corporate talent managers are looking for viable strategies to identify and develop the leadership capabilities of their diverse talent base. This workshop session will examine how to drive diversity at the top levels of an organization by implementing strategies that create diverse work experiences, providing candidates with a balanced set of skills in their functional area.

Identifying talent, increasing cultural competency, and assisting candidates to create professional development plans should be organizational priorities aligned with the overall business strategy of the company and integrated into recruitment and retention processes. This workshop session will also explore leveraging networks to build new relationships such as alumni and professional associations, external community and business partners, and employee network groups.

– 8 – Schedule of Events

3:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Workshops (continued)

Increasing knowledge in the fundamentals of supply chain management will enable minority business enterprises (MBEs) to partner with other companies to increase capacity, recognize movements in the supply chain that create opportunities and to elevate your value proposition to gain entry into supply chains with higher growth potential. This workshop session will examine the benefits of supply-chain mastery in achieving growth in a global economy. A true shift towards diversity happens when it becomes second nature, part of the very fabric of who we are – both in front of the camera and, perhaps even more importantly, behind the scenes. In the television news business, it’s not enough to hire on-air staff and say, “now we’re diverse.” At ABC7, taking an inclusive approach to the people we hire leads to an inclusive approach to the stories we cover and the manner in which we present the news each day. It is the only way we can truly flourish, the only way we can forge that essential connection with our viewers.

Now in its 22nd season, the Chicago Sinfonietta has enriched the cultural and educational quality of life in Chicago since 1987, while gaining significant recognition on the national and international stage. The Sinfonietta is the most diverse orchestra in the country (as determined by a 2008 survey conducted by Professor Earl Carter of Julliard), employing more musicians of color than any other ensemble. The orches- tra performs subscription seasons at Symphony Center in downtown Chicago and at Lund Auditorium in River Forest. Under Founding Music Director Paul Freeman, the Sinfonietta has earned a reputation for innovative programming that attracts un- derserved and new audiences. Over forty percent of the subscribers and single ticket buyers are people of color. The Sinfonietta has recently been recognized for its work of championing diversity and inclusiveness in classical music by receiving the Wallace Foundation’s Award of Excellence, one of only nine Chicago arts organizations chosen out of fifty local applicants, and by the World Diversity Leadership Summit in 2007 as their Global Diversity in the Arts award recipient. In addition, the Chicago Sinfonietta has produced fourteen CDs, has embarked on six European tours, and has performed twice at the JFK Center for the Performing Arts. In August the orchestra performed its debut concert at Millennium Park’s Pritzker Pavilion for an audience of 11,000.

Luna Negra Dance Theater creates, performs, and teaches contemporary dance by Latino choreographers. In ten years, Luna Negra Dance Theater has established itself as a significant and vital component of Chicago’s arts and cultural community. Since Eduardo Vilaro founded Luna Negra in 1999, the company has served as a springboard for Latino contemporary choreographers to give expression to their stories and bring new life to the cultures of their communities. Steering away from stereotypes and folkloric representations, Luna Negra brings to audiences modern Latino expressions with energy, power and passion, reflecting through dance the immense cultural shift that is shaping America in the 21st century. Luna Negra’s distinctive style blends the discipline of ballet with the dynamic movements of contemporary dance, infused with the explosive energy of Latin and Afro-Caribbean dance forms.

– 108 – Bridge Awards Introduction

2008 CHICAGO UNITED BRIDGE AWARDS

The Bridge Award represents the first national award that honors a CEO who is an advocate for multiracial diversity in corporate governance. In keeping with the spirit of our advocacy in support of the development of multiracial participation at all levels in business, this award brings visibility to those who have driven change and have inspired others to follow.

Chicago United (CU) established the Bridge Award during its inaugural Changing Color of Leadership Conference in November of 2004. The award celebrates the accomplishments of a chief executive officer of a publicly held corporation who has inspired and supported diversity on its board of directors. The award also rec- ognizes a corporation’s commitment to diversity in senior level management and its business partnerships among diverse firms.

Our efforts focused on the Fortune 100 to select this year’s recipients of the National Bridge Award Recipient. After conducting a rigorous examination of publicly available company data, CU reviewed five national companies with diverse boards of directors based on a specific threshold of diverse board member participation. The National Bridge Award serves to honor the exemplary practices of a Fortune 100 corporation.

Each company was evaluated on quantitative and qualitative data by an internal and external committee. The committees consisted of corporate and non-profit executives, entrepreneurs and academicians, and were selected based on their neutrality and experience. The committees were provided with rating/ranking criteria and a cumu- lative point system for the award selection process.

We applaud the 2008 Bridge Award recipient Indra K. Nooyi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, PepsiCo, for being a true champion for diversity in governance, management, and business partnerships. Your leadership, vision, and commitment will continue to foster innovative approaches to achieving diversity in corporate governance throughout the business community.
